  • 2006 Osare Santa Barbara County
2006 Osare Santa Barbara County To many, “the” grape of Italy is Sangiovese, with visions of checkered tablecloths and straw covered bottles. While that romantic picture is true, it is also true that Sangiovese is a friendly and giving grape that can be crafted into many different styles. Its natural acidity and preference for time in the barrel and bottle make it a natural for – a dessert wine! Do we dare? Oh, yes…we do! “Osare” means “to dare” in Italian. And many winemakers wouldn’t, as this style of making wine requires not only patience, but skill. The Sangiovese grapes hail from the stellar Alisos Vineyard in Santa Barbara County’s Los Alamos Valley. A percentage of the Sangiovese grapes picked for Palmina are placed onto drying racks, with no clusters touching the others, and allowed to dry into tiny and intense raisins. After 100+ days of drying and the arrival of the new year, the raisins are slightly re-hydrated with a bit of Sangiovese wine and allowed to partially ferment. At the ultimate ratio of sweetness to alcohol, the fermenting raisins are pressed and put to barrel for further aging. This daring adventure is a winemaking method passed down through generations in the Veneto and known as apassiemento (drying of the grapes). This process develops aromatic and sensory compounds that are changed from undried grapes rounding out tannins and eliminating some of the more bitter tasting ones. The result is a full-bodied red wine that is higher in alcohol with a strong structure and nose reminiscent of flowers and preserved cherries.

An Atlas of Rare & Familiar Colour THE HARVARD ART MUSEUMS’ FORBES PIGMENT COLLECTION Yoko Ono “If people want to make war they should make a colour war, and paint each others’ cities up in the night in pinks and greens.” Foreword p.6 Introduction p.12 Red p.28 Orange p.54 Yellow p.70 Green p.86 Blue p.108 Purple p.132 Brown p.150 Black p.162 White p.178 Metallic p.190 Appendix p.204 8 AN ATLAS OF RARE & FAMILIAR COLOUR FOREWORD 9 You can see Harvard University’s Forbes Pigment Collection from far below. It shimmers like an art display in its own right, facing in towards Foreword the glass central courtyard in Renzo Piano’s wonderful 2014 extension to the Harvard Art Museums. The collection seems, somehow, suspended within the sky. From the public galleries it is tantalising, almost intoxicating, to see the glass-fronted cases full of their bright bottles up there in the administra- tive area of the museum. The shelves are arranged mostly by hue; the blues are graded in ombre effect from deepest midnight to the fading in- digo of favourite jeans, with startling, pleasing juxtapositions of turquoise (flasks of lightest green malachite; summer sky-coloured copper carbon- ate and swimming pool verdigris) next to navy, next to something that was once blue and is now simply, chalk. A few feet along, the bright alizarin crimsons slake to brownish brazil wood upon one side, and blush to madder pink the other. This curious chromatic ordering makes the whole collection look like an installation exploring the very nature of painting.

Colombia Trip Report 1000 Birds Mega Tour 22nd November to 20th December 2013 (28 days) White-capped Tanagers by Adam Riley Tour Leader(s): Forrest Rowland and Trevor Ellory Top 10 Tour Highlights (as voted by participants): 1. Santa Marta Screech-Owl 2. Guianan Cock-of-the-rock 3. Chestnut-crested Antbird 4. Azure-naped Jay 5. White-tipped Quetzal Trip Report - RBT Colombia Mega 2013 2 6. White-capped Tanager 7. Black-and-white Owl 8. Black Solitaire 9. Crested Ant Tanager 10. Bare-crowned Antbird Tour Intro Colombia has become iconic among Neotropical bird enthusiasts…that is to say, anybody who has ever seen a Cock-of-the-rock, Manakin lek, or hummingbird feeding station in the Andes! It is impossible to avoid falling in love with this diverse, impressive, stunning part of the world – and Colombia has the best of it. Guianan shield, Amazon Basin, three Andean ranges, tropical valleys, coastlines, and the famed Santa Marta Mountains are only what is NOW recognized as accessible. As time passes, access increases, and Colombia (rather than becoming more mundane) just becomes more mysterious as new species reveal themselves and new habitats become known, and we look to ever more remote parts of this complex nation. The mystery and wonder of Colombia, perhaps more than any other country, begged a challenge: is it possible for a commercial tour to record more than 1000 species of birds in less than a month? If so, Colombia was obviously the place to do it! The following is a much abbreviated account of one of the most spectacular journeys this author has ever embarked upon, and cannot possibly do justice to the marvelous sights, sounds, smells, and tastes one encounters after spending a whole month in Birder’s Paradise – Colombia! Tour Summary We all congregated in Colombia’s cosmopolitan capitol city Santa Fe de Bogota, on November 22nd, 2013.
