2 at the Elko Bowhunter Classic Our Traditional Shooters Did Pretty Good At the Elko Bowhunter Classic our traditional shooters did pretty good, Tim Rhyme took 1 st in the recurve division, Mikah Kellers took first in the longbow division. Great job you guys! I don’t know how SAB folks did in other classes… I did a little scouting while I was out there, the entire North East corner of the state is dry, with less snow and water than I have seen out there in number of years. If you have tags out in that area, you will need to take it into consideration, as there may not be water in many areas that there has been in the last few years. Meeting information We had all but two Board members, we also had Ray Gerdes, Cal Yarborough, Paul Delsoldado, Barton Barrow, Wayne and Sandy Thomas, Holly Dean, Owen Mercer, Lystra Pitts, Dan Freshman, Jim Wirgler and Will Barber… Significant action- Voted to return the Bonanza to a shotgun start- based on the back up that we had, which many of the members at the meeting felt was the fault of the staggered start system- that it gets overloaded when you have a large number of people… Bow hunter league- For the past few years, we have run the Bowhunter league, collected all the scores, then had a shoot-off at the Finale’. In order to win the awards for the league, you had to attend the Finale’ to win any of the awards, which were awarded in three categories, adult male all styles except traditional, adult female all styles and traditional. We also gave participation awards for cubs and pewees. For the adult classes of shooters, the scores were tallied and handicapped, to make accommodation for all the different styles of shooters who were all lumped in together. The handicap was calculated, then at the Finale’ there was a shoot-off for the awards using the handicap system to level the playing field between the different styles and skill levels of the different shooters. John Carlson opened a discussion of this procedure, saying that he had a number of people who did not like that they had to come to the Finale in order to win the league and did not like having a handicap system rather than just going with the raw scores from the league. This grew into a discussion of the merits of having awards, the lack of sufficient help so that the set up and take down can go smoothly. John felt that changing the structure of the end of the league would encourage these members to help more. There were numerous different ideas on this including having the last league just be a fun shoot. Eventually this worked down to a motion made by John to: Have no awards for the league, the winners will just be determined on the last day of the league and will be listed in the following newsletter The BBQ at the last league night will be free. 2 We are continually in the process of updating our membership list, if you have had a change of address or other information, please let us know! You will see a few changes that Heather has made and the newsletters are now available there. If you have any information, photos or other things to add to it, please let us know!! I know that a number of you have sent in photos to heather and I, keep doing it, we will get a system figured out on how to best get them on the web site… The Range Captain’s Corner Out on the Range The Lemmon Valley Range remains open to members and the general public every day, via the lower parking lot and walk over gate. There are 28 bail butts available for shooting. Please leave the range clean! Remember, we will be doing our yearly gate code change soon. The new gate code will be sent out to all members in good standing once it is changed. Work party Our next work party has not been scheduled. Now that we have a little more money flow from the Bonanza and the League, we can do some much needed repairs on the bale butts in the field hunter round where the bottom bales have been collapsing. Call Dale Taylor @673-4793 if you have any ideas or questions on work parties. Jim Day has been working on the bale compressor, he got the motor running, but the hydraulic system is still not working right and it needs a wheel bearing. Hunting information First Draw information is out, so check the computer if you haven’t already Remember- Any of our members who take animals, you can have them scored by Paul Farina, who is a certified Pope & Young certified scorer. There is no charge for our members! Finite element analysis as it is termed is as much an art form as a science. The third usage of spine you occasionally come across is meaning 'direction of flight' of the arrow. Suppose with a set of arrows you shoot a particular group on the target. If you replace the arrow set with one where the arrows bend more when being shot than the arrow group will shift to the right (RH archer). Sometimes you come across an expression like 'So and so makes the arrow weaker/decreases spine' when what is meant that so and so tends to make the arrows fly to the right. Wow, when he said confusing isn’t it, he meant it! Here is some simplification… Spine/stiffness/dynamic spine- affects “Archers Paradox” which is how an arrow bends when it is shot. This affects three things: Safety of shooting the arrow… Too light/weak of a spine will cause it to flex to the point it will break when fired Stability of the arrow in flight… Too light or too heavy of a spine will destabilize the arrow as it leaves the bow. This is typically seen as the arrow fishtailing (side to side wobble) Where the arrow will fly and hit on the target…(Based on a right handed shooter) Too heavy or stiff of a spine tends to make the arrows hit to the left… Too light or stiff of a spine tends to make the arrows hit to the right… When he talks about “pile” or “pile weight” on an arrow, what he is talking about is the distribution of weight in the arrow, which can effect it’s “dynamic spine” which then effects the “Archers Parrodox” (how the arrow bends when shot). Here is where we run into this: You have been shooting a set of arrows with 100 grain field points. In preparing for hunting season, you switch out to 125 grain broadheads. This will change the “pile” or loading of the arrow when shot. Since the weight is forward, it can cause increased flexing/bending of the arrows and make it perform as if you had made the spine of the arrow “lighter”, destabilizing the arrow… If you increase the weight at the back of the arrow, for instance going from regular nocks to Lumi-nocks, which are much heavier, it can also affect performance. This will mostly affect the stability of the arrow as it strikes the target. If the arrow is still unstable at all, the increased weight in the back of the arrow will cause whip or bend even more upon impact. Here is how it can affect you; let’s say you have those new long aluminum insets inside your carbon arrows. You start shooting and after the first round of using these arrows, they start shooting all over the place and are very inconsistent. Check the point end of your arrows. The whipping of the arrows as they hit the target may be bending the long inserts, which are aluminum and do not flex back as your carbon arrows will with shorter inserts. Written in the days of Victoria, it was inward look- ing and took no account of the extensive para-military activity that now typifies policing across the world. For this reason the researching and compilation of this book has been complicated by the requirement to make arbitrary decisions about just which law enforcement bodies to include in the survey. Instances of this can be clearly seen from the coverage of the United States of America [USA], the country where the ground swell of law enforcement aviation was, and is, most clearly to be seen. EQUIPMENT: Participants will provide their own gun/bow, safety glasses, earplugs, and other equipment. Guns/bows used for competition should be carried in a box or case. In the case of the contest at Platte River State Park portion of the contest, guns and bows from the park may be checked out to use. If so, please speak to Les Hlavac to familiarize yourself with your equipment before contest begins. CONTEST ENTRY: All shooting sports participants must pre-enter on a shooting sports entry sheet due to the extension office by closing on June 30th. Pre-entry must be completed for each event. Each contestant must pay park entrance fees and range fees at Platte River State Park before contest begins.
