15 Reasons to Visit Baku and Azerbaijan Now Recommended by the Savvy Concierge Team at Four Seasons Hotel Baku
15 Reasons to Visit Baku and Azerbaijan Now Recommended by the savvy Concierge team at Four Seasons Hotel Baku March 16, 2015, Baku, Azerbaijan Experience one of the world’s most exciting cities and let the Concierge team at Four Seasons Hotel Baku be the guide with these recommendations: 1. Icherisheher – The Old City, at 22 hectares (54 acres) in size, it contains hundreds of historical monuments, four of which are of world importance and 28 of which are of local importance. Visit souvenir, carpet and antique shops, and workshops of local handicrafts. It became the first location in Azerbaijan to be 1 classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You can see Maiden Tower, Market Square, Karvan Saray Bukhara, Karvan Saray Multani, Baku Khan's Residence, Shirvan Shahs' Palace, Aga-Mikhail bath house, Double Gates, and several old mosques in Old town. 2. Old Oil Fields - The fame of Baku as a new industrial revolution capital started with strong fountains of oil in 1872 in the outskirts of the villages of Balakhani, Sabunchu and Ramana. Within a few years oil- bearing parts of Absheron turned into densely populated regions. More than a hundred wells were drilled and on the first stage up to forty small firms functioned in the outskirts of Balakhani. The sharpest problem of oil industrialists of that time was the transportation of oil from Balakhani to Baku. In 1877 a pood of oil cost 3 cents and its transportation to the city cost 20 cents. In 1863 the professor-chemist Mendeleev recommended building an oil pipeline during his visit to Baku, but the volume of production was not big then and that’s why the proposal was never realized. -
AZERBAIJAN: the Boy Who (Officially) Doesn't Exist
FORUM 18 NEWS SERVICE, Oslo, Norway http://www.forum18.org/ The right to believe, to worship and witness The right to change one's belief or religion The right to join together and express one's belief This article was published by F18News on: 1 December 2004 AZERBAIJAN: The boy who (officially) doesn't exist By Felix Corley, Forum 18 News Service <http://www.forum18.org> 18-month-old Luka Eyvazov does not officially exist, Forum 18 News Service has found, because local authorities refuse to issue birth certificates for children with Christian names. "We have letters from village residents and 98 per cent are opposed to registering Christian names," local registration official Aybeniz Kalashova told Forum 18. Mehman Soltanov of the Justice Ministry asked Forum 18 "why did they choose a religious name?" and then speculated that it was not Luka's parents who chose his name but "some religious sect". Luka's father, Novruz Eyazov, insists that children are from God and told Forum 18 that "We went many times to ask what basis they had to interfere in our family life. They indicated there was pressure on them from on high. When they told me to choose the name of a famous Azerbaijani poet or writer instead," he told Forum 18, "I responded that Luke, as one of the Gospel-writers, will still be famous when all the poets and writers are long forgotten." This is the latest of case of official refusal to register Christian names. Without birth certificates, people cannot go to kindergarten or to school, get treatment in a hospital or travel abroad. -

Before I start telling you about Sumgayit events, which I firmly believe are of vital importance for Azerbaijan, and in the trial of which I represented the government, about peripeteia of this trial and other happenings which became echoes and continuation of the tragedy in Sumgayit, and finally about inferences I made about all the abovementioned as early as in 1989, I would like to give you some brief background about myself, in order to demonstrate you that I was not involved in the process occasionally and that my conclusions and position regarding the case are well grounded. Thus, after graduating from the Law Faculty of of the Kuban State University of Russia with honours, I was appointed to the Neftekumsk district court of the Stavropol region as an interne. After the lapse of some time I became the assistant for Mr Krasnoperov, the chairman of the court, who used to be the chairman of the Altay region court and was known as a good professional. The existing legislation at that time allowed two people’s assessors to participate in the court trials in the capacity of judges alongside with the actual judge. -

WELCOME BACK TO BAKU Dear friends, On behalf of Baku City Circuit, please let me welcome you to the third successive Formula 1 race weekend in Azerbaijan. Last year’s race in Baku was widely recognised as the most exciting and dramatic race of the year – if not the decade – by members of the media, teams, drivers and the global F1 fanbase alike. It truly was a race that had it all culminating in the most unexpected podium line up in many years. The fact that this historic race occurred under our new event title as the FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX filled us with an even greater sense of pride and satisfaction for a job well done. This year we once again welcome the world to Baku at the slightly earlier date of late April to bear witness to the awe-inspiring sight of F1 cars negotiating one of the fastest and most testing circuits in Formula 1. Baku City Circuit’s winding, narrow sequences, 90-degree turns and high-speed straights - all set against the breath- taking backdrop of Baku’s UNESCO-protected old city, magnificent skylines and beautiful seaside promenade - have proven to be a major challenge to the current F1 grid, resulting in last year’s spectacular outcome and many on-track altercations. We are very confident of a similar explosion of drama, speed and bravery occurring once again for the 2018 edition. Furthermore, the off-track entertainment will be bigger and better than ever before with world-class music, visual and conceptual artists once again performing all along the specially constructed Fan Zone all weekend. -
Lopez Vlasov Stand Tall in GR Rankings with Repeat Wins at Rio
From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Lopez, Vlasov Stand Tall in GR Rankings with Repeat Wins at Rio 2016 Date: September 12, 2016 at 9:15 AM To: [email protected] Lopez, Vlasov Stand Tall in GR Rankings with Repeat Wins at Rio 2016 By William May // Photo: Gabor Martin CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (September 8) – Mijain LOPEZ NUNEZ (CUB) and Roman VLASOV (RUS) closed out the 2016 international wrestling season with repeat triumphs at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and No.1 rankings in the United World Wrestling list of the top Greco-Roman wrestlers. Lopez claimed his third Olympic Games gold medal at super heavyweight by sneaking past reigning world champion Riza KAYAALP (TUR) in the 130kg final at Rio 2016, while world champion Vlasov followed up a win in London four years ago with another gold medal performance in Rio de Janeiro. Of the four remaining Greco-Roman champions crowned at Carioca Arena, only Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) at 59kg was able to match Vlasov by moving seamlessly from world champion to the Olympic Games gold medal – his first. Like Lopez, two-time world champion Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM), who slipped to No.2 in the rankings at 98kg after a loss at the European championships in March, reclaimed the top spot with a 3-0 victory over Yasmany LUGO CABRERA (CUB). Meanwhile, Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS) went from third to No.1 at 85kg with a win over world champ Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) and 2014 world champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB) carved his way through a crowded field at 66kg to go from No.6 in the rankings to No.1.
