Coronal Mass Ejection What’s Hot in Speculative Fiction from a Canadian Perspective Special Saskatoon Spec Fic Pub Night Issue A reminder to all and sundry that Saskatoon’s first Speculative Fiction pub night will be occur this Thursday, Jan 27 at 7:30 in the back room of Amigos Cantina on 10th Street, 1 block east of Broadway. Join us for food, fun and fights as we hang with fellow fans in an atmosphere of relaxing camaraderie. Can’t Get enough of my SF Books Funny, I never ate Sugar-Crisps in my life, yet approaching 50, that ditty remains a part of my awareness. Hoping that SF can manage to do the same, I set out to create a list of great books for 2010. The realization of how little I got read last year, coupled with the discovery of exactly how many people do exactly the same thing was bit humbling. So, instead, I point you to a few places where you may discover other people’s lists. Strange Love For Science Fiction Blog has interesting tidbits regularly, but for today, the writer points to several lists, including on YA specific: http://strangelove4sf.blogspot.com/2011/01/bestsfbooks2010listmania.html Amazon lets you select between Editors’ Picks in book and ebook format, or top customer picks (presumably by sales) http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&plgroup=1&docId=1000628171 Coming at it from the other end, in 2009, Fantasy Book Critic’s Liviu listed 10 most anticipated reads of 2010.

  • Cosplay Material and Transmedial Culture in Play
Cosplay Material and Transmedial Culture in Play Nicolle Lamerichs Maastricht University Grote Gracht 90-92 6211 SZ Maastricht [email protected] ABSTRACT Through “cosplay” (co stume play) fans perform existing fictional characters in self- created costumes, thereby enriching and extending popular narratives. Cosplay is a scarcely studied form of appropriation that transforms and actualizes an existing story or game in close conne ction to the fan community and the fan’s own identity (Lamerichs, 2011; Newman, 2008; Okabe, 2012; Winge, 2006). The activity can be read as a form of dress up. In the field of game studies, dress up is an often overlooked but significant category of play with its own affordances (Fron, Fullerton, Morie, & Pearce, 2007). While dress up can involve actual costumes or fantasy play, it is also encouraged in digital games and their user-generated content. Customizable characters and “dollhouse” structures in The Sims series are but one example (Wirman, 2011). Similarly, cosplay provides the player with the joys of make-belief and productive play. This paper explores the possibilities of reading the costume itself as a product that facilitates performance and play. I analyze cosplay as a transmedial activity that is constructed at different online and offline sites through small-scaled ethnography and close-reading.
