THE MEDIATION OF THE CHURCH IN SOME PONTIFICAL DOCUMENTS FRANCIS X. LAWLOR, SJ. Weston College N His recent encyclical letter, Hurnani generis, of Aug. 12, 1950, the I Holy Father reproves those who "reduce to a meaningless formula the necessity of belonging to the true Church in order to achieve eternal salvation."1 In the light of the Pope's insistence in the same encyclical letter on the ordinary, day-by-day teaching office of the Roman Pontiffs, it will be useful to select from the infra-infallible but authentic teaching of the Popes some of the abundant material touching the question of the mediatorial function of the Church in the order of salvation. The Popes, to be sure, do not speak and write after the manner of theo logians but as pastors of souls, and it is doubtless not always easy to transpose to a theological level what is contained in a pastoral docu ment and expressed in a pastoral method of approach. Yet the authentic teaching of the Popes is both a guide to, and a source of, theological thinking. The documents cited are of varying solemnity and doctrinal importance; an encyclical letter is clearly of greater magisterial value than, let us say, an occasional epistle to some prelate. It is not possible here to situate each citation in its documentary context; but the force and point of a quotation, removed from its documentary perspective, is perhaps as often lessened as augmented. Those who wish may read them in their context, if they desire a more careful appraisal of evidence. -

The sacrament of charity (1), the Holy Eucharist is the gift that Jesus Christ makes of himself, thus revealing to us God's infinite love for every man and woman. This wondrous sacrament makes manifest that "greater" love which led him to "lay down his life for his friends" (Jn 15:13). Jesus did indeed love them "to the end" (Jn 13:1). In those words the Evangelist introduces Christ's act of immense humility: before dying for us on the Cross, he tied a towel around himself and washed the feet of his disciples. In the same way, Jesus continues, in the sacrament of the Eucharist, to love us "to the end," even to offering us his body and his blood. What amazement must the Apostles have felt in witnessing what the Lord did and said during that Supper! What wonder must the eucharistic mystery also awaken in our own hearts! The food of truth 2. In the sacrament of the altar, the Lord meets us, men and women created in God's image and likeness (cf. Gen 1:27), and becomes our companion along the way. I explore different ways in which the Eucharist is understood in today’s world. First, I analyse texts of the Second Vatican Council and post-conciliar texts. At the beginning of the second rehearsal I attended one of the Assistant Papal Masters of Ceremony, Monsignor John Cihak, addressed all the servers and other volunteers. He is a priest of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon and also a seminary classmate of mine. Monsignor reminded all present that the primary protagonist in the Sacred Liturgy is the Holy Trinity. From that he expounded on the nature of reverence, both as a matter of interior activity and exterior stillness. -

WILLIAMS [09/12/16] IS ROMAN CATHOLICISM TRUE CHRISTIANITY? – PART 11 MARIOLOGY – PART 2 Recap We began in our last teaching part to explore what is termed in the realm of theology, Mariology – which is the study of Mary, the mother of Jesus. We outlined the biblical portrayal of Mary, a righteous women and a humble handmaid of the Lord. She it was who was found with child of the Holy Spirit, who gave birth to Messiah and nursed Him who was called King of the Jews. We looked at the early life of Jesus and how His mother played an integral role in His nativity and in His early childhood. However, we also saw that as Jesus was growing into manhood, a clear transitioning of authority was taking place between that of His submission to his earthly parents and His submission to His Father in heaven. This was brought out most forcefully in two accounts recorded in the gospel of Luke and John – the first being Jesus’ response to Mary when being only twelve in Jerusalem (Luke 2:48-49) and the other when just beginning His ministry at the wedding in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-5). For Roman Catholics, Mary is not merely and only the biological mother of Jesus, the vehicle used by God to bring His Son into this world. Official Catholic Church dogma teaches that Mary remained a perpetual virgin; that Mary is free from original sin (Immaculate Conception) and at the end of her life on earth, she was taken up into heaven where she continues perpetually to be the mother of God and Queen of Heaven. -

Up to the present time, however, this has not been true of earlier decrees. Those of Trent, bearing on justification, grace, the sacraments, etc., have long been out of print; so also the decree on the Immaculate Conception and the Syllabus of Pope Pius IX. It has seemed advisable, therefore, to publish in one volume, a collection of the most important dogmatic decrees from the Council of Trent down to the reign of Pope Leo XIII. No one will fail to recognize the desirability of such a collection. In almost every doc trinal treatise or sermon some of these decrees are sure to be used. In the majority of cases the writer or preacher is unable to quote directly, because in matters so important he naturally shrinks from the responsibility of giving an exact English rendering of the PREFACE original Latin. With an approved transla tion to guide him he will now be able to quote directly, and thus to state and explain the doctrines of the Church in her own words. HOLY EUCHARIST WHEN DID JESUS CHRIST INSTITUTE THE EUCHARIST? Jesus instituted the Eucharist on Holy Thursday “the night on which he was betrayed” (1 Corinthians 11:23), as he celebrated the Last Supper with his apostles. WHAT DOES THE EUCHARIST REPRESENT IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH? It is the source and summit of all Christian life. In the Eucharist, the sanctifying action of God in our regard and our worship of him reach their high point. It contains the whole spiritual good of the Church, Christ himself, our Pasch. Communion with divine life and the unity of the People of God are both expressed and effected by the Eucharist. Through the Eucharistic celebration we are united already with the liturgy of heaven and we have a foretaste of eternal life. WHAT ARE THE NAMES FOR THIS SACRAMENT? The unfathomable richness of this sacrament is expressed in different names which evoke its various aspects. The most common names are: the Eucharist, Holy Mass, the Lord’s Supper, the Breaking of the Bread, the Eucharistic Celebration, the Memorial of the passion, death and Resurrection of the Lord, the Holy Sacrifice, the Holy and Divine Liturgy, the Sacred Mysteries, the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, and Holy Communion. HOW IS THE CELEBRATION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST CARRIED OUT? The Eucharist unfolds in two great parts which together form one, single act of worship. The Liturgy of the Word involves proclaiming and listening to the Word of God. The Liturgy of the Eucharist includes the presentation of the bread and wine, the prayer or the anaphora containing the words of consecration, and communion.
