ArtsRock.org ArtsRock is a 501 (C)(3) Not For-Profit Corporation Dear Friends both Near and Far, Welcome to SONGS OF PROTEST 4, from ArtsRock.org, a non- profit, non-partisan arts organization based in Nyack, NY. We are so glad you have joined us to celebrate the power of music to make social change. Each of the first three SONGS OF PROTEST events, starting in April of 2017, was presented to sold-out audiences in our Rockland, NY community. This latest concert, was supposed to have taken place in-person on April 6th, 2020. We had the performer lineup and songs already chosen when we had to halt the entire season due to the pandemic. As in SONGS OF PROTEST 1, 2 & 3, we had planned to present an evening filled with amazing performers and powerful songs that have had a historical impact on social justice. When we decided to resume the series virtually, we rethought the concept. With so much going on in our country and the world, we offered the performers the opportunity to write or present an original work about an issue from our current state of affairs.

Once the effects of the new wave were fully absorbed, it became apparent that the world of singer-songwriters would never be the same again. A conceptual mood had taken over the scene, and that mood's predecessors were precisely the Bob Dylans, the Neil Youngs, the Leonard Cohens, the Tim Buckleys, the Joni Mitchells, who had not been the most popular stars of the 1970s. Instead, they became the reference point for a new generation of "auteurs". Women, in particular, regained the status of philosophical beings (and not only disco-divas or cute front singers) that they had enjoyed with the works of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Suzy Gottlieb, better known as Phranc (1), was the (Los Angeles-based) songwriter who started the whole acoustic folk revival with her aptly-titled Folksinger (? 1984/? 1985 - nov 1985), whose protest themes and openly homosexual confessions earned her the nickname of "all-american jewish-lesbian folksinger". She embodied the historic meaning of that movement because she was a punkette (notably in Nervous Gender) before she became a folksinger, and because she continued to identify, more than anyone else, with her post- feminist and AIDS-stricken generation in elegies such as Take Off Your Swastika (1989) and Outta Here (1991).

It's four in the morning and frcm where we sit, this Final Issue looks like a keeper. We've put a ton of time and energyinto this particular edition, and we think you'll have lots of fun with the overview. After all, with some 90 + stations responding to our sur- vey, it's basically your window on RockWorld as it went down this past year. The first year of any new business is hell on wheels, (Groanong, creaking, barking dog sound efx, please) and we've seen quite a parade in '87. When I look back over my final comments last year (after nine issues), it sounded as if we had moved mountains. And in a way we had, starting from scratch to a full service publication some 140 stations deep. But in the 12 months since, it has become readily apparent that we were barely walking then. We've extended our reporter roster well past the 200 mark; Our New Alternative and Hard Rock sections have inspired numerous imitators, and our combi- nation of high technology and people power has effectively re -defined what a tip sheet can and will be in the years to come.

  • Dark Night of the Soul
Danger Mouse And Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The Soul Uncut has reviewed plenty of obscure albums in its time but this may be a first: an album that doesn’t officially exist. As a result of some undisclosed contractual snafu, EMI put the mockers on Dark Night Of The Soul just as it was being readied for release. Undeterred, Danger Mouse pressed ahead anyway, offering Dark Night… as a limited edition photo book featuring David Lynch ’s “visual narrative” for the project, accompanied by a blank, recordable CD and the not-so-cryptic instruction to “use it as you will”. Though careful not to say as much, Danger Mouse was essentially encouraging us to bootleg his own LP, which by this point had mysteriously surfaced on file-sharing networks. Danger Mouse has form in this area, of course. The Grey Album , his inventive mash-up of Jay-Z and The Beatles , also aroused the wrath of EMI, who held the rights to The White Album . It made his reputation, if not his fortune, so he knows the value of peer-to-peer propaganda. On the other hand, Danger Mouse’s clever feint here may just have succeeded in adding a layer of intrigue to a project which, despite its impressive cast list, is not as fascinating as its creators probably hoped. Take Gorillaz ’s Demon Days, substitute Sparklehorse ’s Mark Linkous for Damon Albarn , and David Lynch ’s murky snapshots of sinister smalltown America for Jamie Hewlett ’s anarchic cartoons, and you’ve got the basic idea of Dark Night… There are some big-name cameos – Iggy Pop , Frank Black , a surprisingly compelling Suzanne Vega – but it’s questionable whether a collaborative free-for-all was the best way to approach a concept album about loss of faith; dark nights of the soul, by their very nature, usually demand to be suffered in isolation.

HYDE PARK LIBRARY NEWS – APRIL 2019 ACCLAIMED SINGER-SONGWRITER JOINED BY GRAMMY WINNING INSTRUMENTALIST FOR LIBRARY APPEARANCE April 12, 2019 Dear Hyde Park Library Patrons, Upstate singer-songwriter Marc Berger's evocation of the American West culminated in his acclaimed 2012 release RIDE. His compositions from that record and from his work since "echo the stark, evocative songs of Springsteen's Nebraska, the cinematic tone of Mark Knopfler and the Lone Star alt-country charms of Guy Clark and Townes Van Zant" (Direct Current). Marc has performed at Austin's South X Southwest and the Kerrville and Falcon Ridge Folk Festivals and has opened shows for Bob Dylan and other several national acts. His song "The Last One” was a staple of Richie Havens' concerts. His acclaimed album RIDE is a collection of songs all having to do with the romance of the American West. The release has gotten national airplay and terrific reviews--and was licensed by Starbucks for worldwide in-store airplay. The concert will combine a performance of RIDE with stories about his experiences as an easterner in the mountain and desert west. He will be joined by Grammy winning producer/musician Steve Addabbo on guitar. Additional Commentary of Marc Berger and RIDE: (“Reads like a love letter to the American West.....brims with pure plucky-folk that the likes of The Civil Wars, The Lumineers, and even Norah Jones are bringing to the forefront of popular music....a sad reminder of simpler times that most modern Americans will never experience nor appreciate.....one part Springsteen and one part Dylan, but with pure charisma that is all Berger" (Jayvee, TRT! • SUZANNE VEGA Biography
SUZANNE VEGA Biography Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega will release her latest album, An Evening of New York Songs and Stories, on September 11, 2020 (Amanuensis/Cooking Vinyl). “I recorded these songs at the Café Carlyle in New York City,” Vega says of the album. “It’s a small, exclusive club that has hosted legends from Eartha Kitt to Judy Collins, and is also known to be the place where Jackie Kennedy met Audrey Hepburn. I love it for its bohemian old-world glamour! I included songs that were inspired by New York City or for which New York provided the backdrop, including “Walk on the Wild Side” by my late, great friend, Lou Reed—a song I rarely heard him sing himself.” An Evening of New York Songs and Stories finds Vega backed by longtime guitarist and musical director Gerry Leonard, bassist Jeff Allen and keyboardist Jamie Edwards. Produced by Leonard, mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Kevin Killen and mastered by Grammy Award winner Bob Ludwig, the album was recorded in early 2019 and includes familiar songs like “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner” and deep cuts from Vega’s catalog including “Frank and Ava” and “Ludlow Street.” The mix of repertoire also features “New York Is My Destination” from Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers, Vega’s 2016 album from her one-woman play about the Southern gothic novelist Carson McCullers. Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs.

The lyrics, all written by Suzanne Herself, are deep and meaningful. She also plays acoustic Guitar and writes most of the music.
