    A Comparison of the Paintings of Bada Shanren and Shitao of the Qing Dynasty Liu HONG, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University 1. The respective backgrounds of Bada Shanren and Shitao Bada Shanren, the last and best known of many names used by Zhuda (1626- 1705/6), was a member of the royal household in the Ming Dynasty before he became a monk in 1644. Shitao was also a Ming prince who had grand stature as a painter. Fifteen years or so younger than Bada Shanren, Shitao was born probably between 1638 and 1641 and died possibly before 1720 (Loehr, 1980, p. 299 and 302). Both Bada Shanren and Shitao were forced to be monks and lived poor lives after the extinction of the Ming Dynasty. Due to their misfortunes, they both suffered great pains during their remaining years, which had a great influence on their paintings. Although Bada Shanren was famous when he was alive, his only artist friend was Shitao (Cai & Xu, 1998). Despite their common backgrounds and mutual understanding, their paintings display a considerable amount of differences because of their divergent characteristics and attitudes toward life. In this essay, I will discuss the similarities and differences between their artwork through some painting examples, and give my own interpretations.     Chapter Five Guangxi, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Sichuan (1928-1935): the landscape of art As early as the fifth century, Xie He (謝 赫, active ca. 500) outlined what he called the Six Principles of Painting (liu fa 六 法). “Spirit resonance and life movement” (qiyun shengdong 氣 韻 生 動), the first principle, is what defines Chinese painting and is the most significant and elusive.1 Since the Song dynasty, the observation of natural phenomena has been an important aspect of artistic creation in China. Artists sketched from nature in order to understand the principles of the life force or qi which animated the natural world. In doing so, they were following the first of Xie He’s Six Principles. The great Yuan dynasty landscape painter Huang Gongwang (黃 公 望, 1269-1354), inspired by the Five Dynasties and Northern Song artists Li Cheng (李 成, 919-967) and Guo Xi (郭 熙, ca. 1001-1090), exhorted his students to: Carry around a sketching brush in a leather bag. Then, when you see in some scenic place a tree that is strange and unique, you can copy its appearance then and there as a record. It will have an extraordinary sense of growing life. Climb a tall building and gaze at the “spirit resonance” [qiyun] of the vast firmament. Look at the clouds-they have the appearance of mountaintops! Li Ch’eng and Kuo Hsi both practiced this method; Kuo Hsi painted “rocks like clouds”. When the ancients speak of “Heaven opening forth pictures”, this is what they mean.2 In his “Conversation on art” (Hua tan 畫 談), written in 1940, Huang Binhong referred to this passage and synthesised the writings of a number of earlier artists whose art was also 1 Osvald Sirén, The Chinese on the Art of Painting, Translations and Comments, pp.18-22.

    TWO CHICKS Beth K Karon Artist: Zhu Da, Chinese, 1626 - 1705 aka Bada Shanren, Chu Ta, Pa-ta-Shan-jen Date: C.1694 - Qing Dynasty Accession number: 97.133.1 Location: G 203 Inscriptions: Stamps inscriptions in black ink at URC of image and eight lines of inscription in ink at lower right border; three stamps at URC; four stamps at LLC; two stamps at LRC; two stamps in border at text. Gallery Label: Zhu Da painted chickens on several occasions. The artist often expressed complex ideas through simple images. It is likely that these quickly rendered chicks express the artist’s loyalty to the former Ming Dynasty while indicating his contempt for the ruling Manchus. Zhu Da saw himself as being in but not part of the society around him. With his imperial lineage eradicated by the conquering Manchus, he was unable to make obeisance to the foreign rulers. Although the chicks are of the same species and face in complementary directions, they do not look at each other. Each is isolated from the other and exist in virtually separate worlds. The inscription reads: Painted in the Garden of Yellow Bamboo by Pa-ta-Shan-Jen, the nineteenth day of the third lunar month. The “nineteenth day of the thrid lunar month” is now known to commemorate the day in 1644 when the last Ming emperor hanged himself as rebel forces approached the capital. The Rest of the Story: Two of the most outstanding artists of the early Qing period were descendants of the Ming Royal House: Zhu Da (1626–1705) and Zhu Ruoji (1642–1707), both of whom became better known by their assumed names, Bada Shanren (literal meaning Mountain Man of the Eight Greats ) and Shitao, respectively, though as noted above, Zhu Da had other aliases.

    Seeing and Transcending Tradition in Chen Shuren’s Guilin Landscape Album by Meining Wang A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History of Art, Design and Visual Culture Department of Art and Design University of Alberta ©Meining Wang, 2019 Abstract In 1931, the Chinese Lingnan school painter and modern Chinese politician Chen Shuren 陈树人 (1884-1948) went on a political retreat trip to Guilin, Guangxi China. During his trip in Guilin, Chen Shuren did a series of paintings and sketches based on the real scenic site of Guilin. In 1932, Chen’s paintings on Guilin were published into a painting album named Guilin shanshui xieshengji 桂林山水写生集 (The Charms of Kwei-Lin) by the Shanghai Heping Publishing House. By discussing how Chen Shuren’s album related with the past Chinese painting and cultural tradition in the modern context, I interpret it as a phenomenon that unified various Chinese painting concepts in modern Chinese history. I argue that by connecting the landscape of Guilin with a past Chinese cultural tradition and foreshowing a modern aesthetic taste, Chen Shuren merged Guilin into the 20th century Chinese cultural landscape. ii Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been completed without enormous help and encouragement from various aspects.     The East Asian Literati Painting Theories of Sisŏhwa as a Contemplative Practice HYUNKYOUNG SHIN Introduction Most of the East Asian literati’s academic thoughts were compiled and integrated in the form of sisŏhwa (poetry, calligraphy, and painting); their painting theories were no exception. They constructed an academic conti- nuity centering on poetry (si), calligraphy (sŏ), and painting (hwa) theories, through a process of gradual adjustment and rearrangement.1 Naturally, the literati were scholars while also being artists.2 They placed importance on spiritual depth as an artistic value in their sisŏhwa; thus, both the aesthetic sense and spirituality were emphasized.3 However, the integrative way of study has been lost or fragmented; East Asian painting as sisŏhwa is now a discipline separate from writing, poetry, and philosophy. Moreover, the modernization of the East is a process toward Westernization distorted by a Cartesian perspective. It is accompanied by self- centered visuality, and such construction has resulted in a self- forfeit of ways of seeing. The nondualistic perspective of the East has been dichoto- mized, and Eastern identities have been put into chaos; only its technical function in painting has remained, along with changes in the sociocultural and educational system. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the integra- tive role of sisŏhwa in traditional education and to reintroduce the literati’s unified way of seeing in a monistic universe as a way to solve the problems caused by the modern dichotomy in Korea. This paper asserts that the lack of spirituality in East Asian painting comes from the absence of theories related to integration between philosophical HyunKyoung Shin earned a PhD and an MED in art education, as well as an MFA in art from the University of Minnesota.

    THE EUROPEAN DISCOVERY OF CHINA POMPEU FABRA UNIVERSITY BARCELONA THE 17th CENTURY A CONFUCIAN EMPEROR The final stabilization of the Qing dynasty came with the Kangxi emperor whose reign was one of the longest and one of the best of the whole Chinese history: he was an active man with an inquisitive mind. Kangxi was one of the Three Emperors that took the Qing dynasty to its zenith: Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong. Two of them reigned for more than 60 years and together they sat in the throne for 130 years, providing Chinese government a strong continuity. In the cities the Manchu lived in restricted quarters, like the Tartar city in Beijing: that was also the case in Hangzhou, Canton and all Chinese cities. They talked different, wrote different: the Manchu accommodation to China was never complete, and the Chinese elite resentment against the Manchu lingered for a long time. It found expression for instance in two great painters, both members of the defeated Ming imperial family, Shitao and Bada Shanren. Shitao chose to paint in the traditional Chinese style, but added a sense of anguish to his works. His human figures faced a complete void and had nowhere to go, while his mountains were on the verge of crumbling and menaced dangerously the solitary fisherman that looked at them overwhelmed. Bada Shanren went further: his fish were on the brink of perishing for lack of water, opening their mouths in anguish. And his birds where definitely cross anddisplayed a sulky attitude. The sense of desolation is even more intense when he combines bird and fish in a unique painting.
