An invasive species, the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Sta˚ l), is spreading through the region. However, little is known about the complex of stink bug species associ- ated with corn and soybean in the midwestern United States. In this region, particularly in the more northern states, stink bugs have historically caused only infrequent impacts to these crops. To prepare growers and agri- cultural professionals to contend with this new threat, we provide a review of stink bugs associated with soybean and corn in the midwestern United States. -

Little is known about the development of the species, as 16 well as the genetic mechanisms that may favor the establishment of populations in 17 cultivated plants. Here we conduct the first large-scale molecular study with C. 18 impicticornis. We generated RNA-seq data for males and females, at two immature 19 stages, for the genitalia separately and for the rest of the body. We assembled the 20 transcriptome and conduct a functional annotation. De novo assembled transcriptome 21 based on whole bodies and genitalia of males and females contained around 400,000 22 contigs with an average length of 688 bp. After pruning duplicated sequences and 23 conducting a functional annotation, the final annotated transcriptome comprised 39,478 24 transcripts of which 12,665 had GO terms assigned. -

Many species are phytophagous and cause injuries to plants, and can thus be defined as agricultural pests. In this study, the anatomy of the female and male reproductive tracts of three important agricultural pests in Colombia is described: Piezodorus guildinii Westwood, 1837 and Chinavia ubica Rolston 1983, found on soybeans, and Oebalus insularis Stål, 1872, found in rice crops. For that, light microscopy techniques were used. The anatomy of the reproductive tract of sexually mature males of the three species studied consisted of a pair of testes, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory bulb, an ejaculatory duct that opens into an aedeagus, and paired accessory glands. -

Adultos e ninfas dessa espécie foram coletados no Parque Estadual do Espinilho (Barra do Quaraí, RS) e na região da Serra do Sudeste (Canguçu e Caçapava do Sul, RS) e mantidos sob condições controladas (24 ± 1°C; UR 70 ± 10%; 12hL:12hE), alimentados com vagens verdes de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Os ovos e as ninfas de primeiro ínstar de C. longicorialis são muito semelhantes àqueles das demais espécies de Chinavia; porém apresentando manchas alaranjadas na margem lateral dos segmentos torácicos. As manchas abdominais, a partir do terceiro ínstar, são nitidamente divididas pelas pseudo-suturas do abdome, o que constitui caráter diagnóstico para C. longicorialis. Ninfas do terceiro ao quinto ínstar apresentaram formas claras e escuras. Não foi observada sobreposição nas medidas de largura da cabeça entre diferentes estádios. O número de ovos por postura mais freqüente foi 14; sugere-se a adoção da moda como melhor estimativa para o tamanho das posturas em Pentatomidae. -

Diversity of stink bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) egg parasitoids in woodland and crop habitats in southwest Georgia, USA P. Glynn Tillman* Abstract Euschistus servus (Say), Chinavia hilaris (Say), and Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are economic pests of row crops. They move within and between closely associated crop and non-crop habitats throughout the growing season in response to deteriorating suitability of their current host plants. This study was conducted to investigate parasitism of naturally occurring C. hilaris and E. servus eggs in woodland habitats and crops alongside these habitats in southwest Georgia, USA. Also, parasitism of sentinel eggs ofN. viridula was examined in a woodland habitat. Ten species of parasitoids, including 7 scelionids, 2 eupelmids, and 1 encyrtid, parasitizedE. servus eggs. Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) was the most prevalent parasitoid of E. servus eggs in each of 3 habitats: woodlands, an early-season crop, and late-season crops. In woodlands, 27.9% of E. servus eggs were parasitized byAnastatus reduvii (Howard) and A. mirabilis (Walsh & Riley) (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae). Four species of parasitoids, including 1 scelionid, 2 eupelmids, and 1 encyrtid, parasitized C. hilaris eggs. Trissolcus edessae Fouts (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) was the most prevalent parasitoid of C. hilaris eggs in woodlands and the only parasitoid of C. hilaris eggs in late-season crops. In woodlands, 40.7% of C. hilaris eggs were parasitized by A. reduvii and A. mirabilis. In a woodland habitat, 6.6% of N. viridula sentinel eggs were parasitized by A. reduvii females, Anastatus males, and 1 encyrtid. Anastatus species were the only parasitoids that existed primarily in woodland habitats. -

The genus Chinavia Orian (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae) in Brazil, with a pictorial key to adults. Chinavia Orian is one of the most speciose Pentatominae genera and is distributed in the Afrotropical, Nearctic and Neotropical regions. In Brazil, 32 species are recordered, from which 18 are endemic; host-plant association from 18 species are known, and immatures or some life history traits for six species were already described. In this work, we provided a diagnosis and discuss data available on immatures and biology of all species of Chinavia found in Brazil, including a pictorial key to adult identification. Two new synonyms are recognized: Acrosternum (Chinavia) bellum Rolston, 1983 is a junior synonym of Chinavia nigrodorsata (Breddin, 1903), and Acrosternum (Chinavia) panizzii Frey-da-Silva & Grazia, 2001 is a junior synonym of Chinavia obstinata (Stål, 1860). Chinavia nigritarsis (Stål, 1872), formerly a synonym of Chinavia gravis (Walker, 1867), is reinstated. Color habitus ilustrations of all species are provided, the majority taken from type-material. New host-plant associations and distribution data to Chinavia species in Brazil are presented. KEYWORDS. Acrosternum; Nezara; Nezarini; stink bugs; phytophagy. RESUMO. -

The green stink bug, Chinavia hilaris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is a pest of cotton in the southeastern United States but little is known concerning its spatiotemporal distribution in corn cropping systems. Therefore, the spatiotemporal distribution of C. hilaris in farmscapes, when corn was adjacent to cotton, peanut, or both, was examined weekly. The spatial patterns of C. hilaris counts were analyzed using Spatial Analysis by Distance Indices methodology. Interpolated maps of C. hilaris density were used to visu- Downloaded from alize abundance and distribution of C. hilaris in crops in corn–peanut–cotton farmscapes. This stink bug was detected in six of seven corn–cotton farmscapes, four of six corn–peanut farmscapes, and in both corn–peanut–cotton farmscapes. The frequency of C. hilaris in cotton (89.47%) was significantly higher than in peanut (7.02%) or corn (3.51%). This stink bug fed on noncrop hosts that grew in field borders adjacent to crops. The spatial distribution of C. hilaris in crops and the capture of C. hilaris adults and nymphs in phero- mone-baited traps near noncrop hosts indicated that these hosts were sources of this stink bug dispersing into crops, primarily cotton. -

Rider1 Abstract The Pentatomoidea fauna for North Dakota is documented. There are 62 species of Pentatomoidea known from North Dakota: Acanthosomatidae (2), Cydnidae (4), Pentatomidae: Asopinae (9), Pentatomidae: Pentatominae (34), Pentatomidae: Podopinae (2), Scutelleridae (6), and Thyreocoridae (5). Of this total, 36 represent new state records for North Dakota. Additionally, 16 new state records are reported for Minnesota, and one new state record each for South Dakota, Texas, and Utah.
