Bendix (Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC) is proud to work with school districts and vehicle manufacturers across North America in pursuit of safer student transportation as NAPT marks National School Bus Safety Week Oct. 21-25. The theme of this year’s National School Bus Safety Week is “My School Bus – The Safest Form of Student Transportation.” The theme reflects National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data showing that the classic yellow school bus is 70 times safer than walking, bicycling, or riding in a passenger car or light truck to and from school. “Even so, a single school bus collision is one too many,” said TJ Thomas, director of marketing and customer solutions – Controls, at Bendix, the North American leader in the development and manufacture of intelligent, integrated active safety, air management, and braking solutions for commercial vehicles. “Bendix and all its industry partners are working tirelessly to help keep student passengers safe, and to support the school bus drivers who oversee their daily travels.” -more- BENDIX EFFORTS SUPPORT MAKING SCHOOL BUSES EVEN SAFER Oct.

Thomas, and quickly gained a reputation for building high quality streetcars. Within a few years, Thomas-built streetcars were in use in many of the major cities in the U.S. For nearly two decades Thomas was a major force in the industry, building more than 400 streetcars. In 1936, the company ceased production of streetcars and launched a new product: school buses. By the early 1960s, Thomas Car Works had built a national reputation in the school bus business. In 1972, the company changed its name to Thomas Built Buses to better reflect its success in bus manufacturing. Since the first Thomas Built bus rolled off the assembly line in 1936, the company has focused on delivering the smartest and most innovative buses in North America. That dedication has made Thomas Built a leading bus manufacturer in North America, offering a full line of school, commercial, specialty, childcare and activity buses to value-minded buyers. • Top 10 School Bus Companies Blog
TOP 10 SCHOOL BUS COMPANIES Throughout the years, the task of making the best buses for school transportation has been handled by various companies. This article features 10 school bus companies which made a name for themselves, when it came to redefining the way we look at a school bus. #1 WAYNE CORPORATION Topping our list of companies is Wayne Corporation. Though the company declared itself bankrupt and discontinued operation in 1992, the Wayne Corporation had played a vital role in the development of safe buses for school children. They were the first and foremost to introduce the concept of school buses for schools. Their innovation predates the famous yellow coloured buses which are widely used these days. www.trackschoolbus.com They introduced the horse drawn carts, including kid hacks, which later evolved into automobiles which used full metal body chassis. Wayne Corporation introduced guard rails on the sides of all school buses, inboard wheelchair lifts, and even high-headroom doors. They were the first with a school bus based upon a cutaway van chassis, the Wayne Busette. This chassis design is still one of the most popular in North American markets even after more than 35 years. #2 BLUE BIRD An all time giant, the Blue Bird Corporation (formerly called Blue Bird Body Company) is clearly one of the top school bus manufacturing companies even today. Blue Bird's corporate headquarters and main manufacturing facilities are in Georgia. www.trackschoolbus.com It was in 1937 that the company began production of full-steel bus bodies. This innovation would soon replace the wooden bodies which were commonly used in the United States.

  • (Revised) TBB Bendix Air Disc Brake Calipers
Daimler Trucks Recall Campaign North America LLC September 2020 FL818AB NHTSA #19V-444 Transport Canada #2019-288 SECOND REVISED NOTICE Subject: TBB Bendix Air Disc Brake Calipers Models Affected: Specific Model Year 2010 to 2019 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX, EFX, and C2 (Freightliner Custom Chassis B2 school bus chassis) buses manufactured March 16, 2009, through June 29, 2018. General Information Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its wholly owned subsidiaries, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation and Thomas Built Buses, (TBB) has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists on the vehicles mentioned above. There are approximately 11,000 vehicles involved in this campaign. On certain buses, the Bendix air disc brake caliper on the left (driver side) rear corner may experience an unintended reduction in the gap between the brake pad and rotor (running clearance), during operation which can lead to a dragging brake. In addition, if the gap between the brake pad and rotor is eliminated, it may lead to high temperatures at the wheel end. The high temperatures may lead to the presence of smoke, smoke odor, or a potential for fire, which could result in school bus emergency evacuation procedures in uncontrolled traffic situations. The left rear caliper will be inspected and replaced, if needed, with a new caliper containing an updated clearance adjustment mechanism. REVISION: A small number of replacement calipers for vehicles in FL818B may have a defect. For FL818B, an inspection of the replacement caliper has been added. (FL818A is not affected and inspection of replacement calipers for FL818A is not needed.) Previous repairs are not affected, as the issue is present at the time of installation.

  • Transportation Electrification in the Southeast
ATLAS PUBLIC POLICY WASHINGTON, DC USA SOUTHERN ALLIANCE FOR CLEAN ENERGY KNOXVILLE, TN USA STATE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPLOYMENT & INVESTMENT IN MANUFACTURING OCTOBER 2020 CONNER SMITH, ATLAS PUBLIC POLICY Transportation electrification is taking hold in the United States with increasing investment and funding supporting the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure across all vehicle classes. Since 2010, a cumulative 1.6 million passenger EVs have been sold with increasing deployment of electric buses and trucks. Investment in the EV sector is on the rise and states across the country are seizing the opportunity to increase deployments of EVs and EV charging across all vehicle types. This brief defines key indicators that outline the state of transportation electrification in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee (‘Southeast’). Overall, the Southeast is behind other regions in the country in terms of passenger EV adoption, EV charging deployment, government funding, and utility investment in transportation electrification. However, the region claims a large proportion of the nation’s passenger EV manufacturing investment and employment which is on the rise with new models entering the market. The region is also home to several medium- and heavy-duty manufacturing facilities as well as EV charging station manufacturers that all stand to grow through an expansion of the EV market in the region. The Southeast states have a significant opportunity to create a virtuous cycle with these investments by developing public policy that accelerates demand for EVs and EV charging. For example, infrastructure deployment could be supported by $86 million in pending utility investment across Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
