Master Thesis Sustainability reporting in the airline industry: a comparative case study analysis of four selected European passenger airlines and their countries of registration on the basis of the airlines’ annual reports and sustainability report from 2018 Student: Laura Vani Kesore (s2015323) [email protected] Study program: Public Administration M.Sc. First Supervisor: Prof. Dr. René Torenvlied [email protected] Second Supervisor: Dr. Ringo Ossewaarde [email protected] Master Thesis 24 August 2020 University of Twente, Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences Drienerlolaan 5 7522 NB Enschede, NL Abstract Sustainability reporting for airlines is becoming more and more important. The driving forces are the external and internal pressures, such as demand from the public and society, from governments, stakeholders and shareholders, as well as from NGOs, activists, and the industry- intern economic competition between the airlines. Within the scope of this research, the main focus was on the research question: How can the variation in the claims of sustainable measures reported in the 2018 annual reports and sustainability reports by four different European airlines be explained from the characteristics of the airlines and of the countries in which the airlines are registered?. The ecosystem for the conducted analyses consists of four airlines from four different countries in the European Union. Seven sustainability parameters were chosen in order to objectively analyze the sustainability reporting of the airlines and of their countries of registrations. The parameters are: (I) alternative fuel, (II) CORSIA, (III) aviation tax, (IV) aircraft age, (V) aircraft design, (VI) Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and (VII) atmosfair Airline Index.

The neighboring emirate, Sharjah, in the UAE is also another success story. With available land and established manufacturing businesses as well as modern air and sea ports, Sharjah is registering strong economic growth and even making headlines in international media by hosting large scale events. We are also subject to state and local laws and regulations at locations where we operate and at airports that we serve. Our operations may become subject to additional international, U.S. federal, state and local requirements in the future. We believe that we are in material compliance with all currently applicable laws and regulations. Civil Reserve Air Fleet. As part of our Charter business, Atlas and Polar both participate in the U.S. Civil Reserve Air Fleet (“CRAF”) Program, which permits the U.S. Department of Defense to utilize participants’ aircraft during national emergencies when the need for military airlift exceeds the capability of military aircraft. Participation in the CRAF Program could adversely restrict our commercial business in times of national emergency. Under the CRAF Program, contracts with the AMC typically cover a one-year period. We have made a substantial number of our aircraft available for use by the U.S. military in support of their operations and we operate such flights pursuant to cost-based contracts. Atlas bears all direct operating costs for both passenger and cargo aircraft, which include fuel, insurance, overfly, landing and ground handling expenses. However, the price of fuel used during AMC flights is fixed by the U.S. military. The contracted charter rates (per mile) and fuel prices (per gallon) are fixed by the AMC periodically. We receive reimbursements from the AMC each month if the price of fuel paid by us to vendors for the AMC Charter flights exceeds the fixed price.

National Air Carrier Association 1735 North Lynn Street, Suite 105 Arlington, VA 22209 T: +1.703.358.8060 March 9, 2021 BY ELECTRONIC MAIL The Honorable Steven M. Dickson Administrator Federal Aviation Administration 800 Independence Avenue, SW Washington, DC 20591 Dear Administrator Dickson, Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Air Carrier Association (NACA) and its member carriers1 have worked closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) staff on various operational challenges. One of the more unique issues related to the pandemic has been an increase in disruptive passengers and crewmember assaults, often resulting from disputes associated with mask requirements. In mid-January, in the wake of the insurrection at the United States Capitol Building, the FAA instituted a Special Enforcement Emphasis Program (SEEP) designed to provide a “zero-tolerance”, maximum penalty, for passengers who have caused significant disruptions in-flight, or committed a physical assault against a member of a flight crew while onboard an aircraft. This program is scheduled to end on March 30, 2021. Many in the airline industry thought the SEEP would bring a significant reduction in disruptive passenger incidents. However, since the SEEP’s inception, our Ultra Low- Cost Carriers (ULCCs) 2 have seen little to no decline in the number of daily disruptive passenger incidents. Sufficient time has not been provided for the impact of the program to be known to the traveling public. Without an understanding of the significant penalties associated with the SEEP, passenger behavior has not been altered by the program’s implementation and the risk to the crew has not been mitigated.
