Bangladesh J. Zool. 47(2): 185-227, 2019 ISSN: 0304-9027 (print) 2408-8455 (online) CHECKLIST OF THE SPIDER FAUNA OF BANGLADESH (ARANEAE : ARACHNIDA) Vivekanand Biswas* Department of Zoology, Khulna Government Womens’ College, Khulna-9000, Bangladesh Abstract: Spiders are one of the important predatory arthropods that comprise the largest order Araneae of the class Arachnida. In Bangladesh, very few contributions are available on the taxonomic study on these arachnids. The present paper contains an updated checklist of the spider fauna of Bangladesh based on the published records of different workers and the identified collections of the recent studies by the author. It includes a total of 334 species of spiders belong to the infraorders Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae under 21 families and 100 genera. A brief diagnosis of different families and their domination together with the distribution throughout the country are provided herewith. Key words: Checklist, spiders, Araneae, Arachnida, Bangladesh INTRODUCTION Bangladesh is basically a riverine agricultural country. It lies between 20.35ºN and 26.75ºN latitude and 88.03ºE and 92.75ºE longitude, covering an area of 1,47,570 sq. km (55,126 sq. miles). The country as such offers varied climatic situations viz., temperature, rainfall, humidity, fogmist, dew and Haor- frost, winds etc. (Rashid 1977). With the vast agricultural lands, also there are different kinds of evergreen, deciduous and mangrove forests staying different areas of the country viz., the southern Sunderbans, northern Bhawal and Madhupur forests and eastern Chittagong and Chittagong Hill-Tracts forest. Along with the agricultural lands, each of the forest ecosystems is composed of numerous species of spider fauna of the country.

The effects of various disturbances on diversity and community structures of ground spiders in the Kenting National Park uplifted coral reef forest were investigated using pitfall traps. In each of the following five sampling sites, ten trap stations were established and were monitored once every month for a whole year: primary forest, primary forest with tourism activities, secondary forest, grassland with tourism activities and abandoned grassland. A total of 2237 adult spiders from 20 families and 110 species were collected, among which 86 (78.2%) were new or newly recorded species to Taiwan. Dominant species can be divided into two major groups according to temporal abundance variations: abundant in the dry season and abundant in the wet season. Habitat preference of 12 dominant species was assessed by comparing their relative abundance between sampling sites. Half of the species exhibited strong habitat preference and two species could only be found in habitats receiving no tourism disturbance. The Shannon–Weaver function, Simpson index and Evenness were not significantly different among the sites, suggesting that these sites had a similar community structure characterized by few dominant species and numerous rare species.

Wijesinghe Department of Entomology American Museum of Natural History Central Park West at 79th Street New York, New York 10024 The monumental Histoire Naturelle des Araignées, published in Paris from 1897 to 1901 by Eugene Simon, still remains the only encyclopedic treatment of the spider genera of the world. In this day and age, the fact that the keys and the descriptions are in Latin is an increasingly serious inconvenience. It is hoped that a translation of Simon's keys to the Groupes of the large and systematically difficult family of jumping spiders, the Salticidae, will be a welcome aid to the increasing numbers of workers in that family. While many, though not all, of Simon's groups are admittedly artificial, they still represent the only available general scheme for identification and access to the literature. The features that Simon used in his keys, such as the relative position of the posterior median eyes, the shape of the ocular quadrangle, the curvature of the line of the anterior eyes, the relative lengths of the third and fourth legs, the presence and position of the thoracic groove, and the spination of the legs, to mention a few, still serve for identification and classification.

The family Salticidae (jumping spiders) is the largest family of spiders; it is known throughout the world, and consists of nearly 6,000 described species belonging to 625 genera, holding 13% of all species of spiders (Foelix, 1996; Jackson et al., 2001). Salticids usually show distinct sexual dimorphism in morphology of the adults. As a result, the male-female complementarity remains unclear for many nominal species in this family. This means that more than a few synonymies are likely hidden in the current classification of the family. Furthermore, due to insufficient sampling efforts in tropical and subtropical zones, it is likely that many species are yet to be discovered. The genus Phintella Strand in Bösenberg and Strand (1906) is one of the most speciose genera in the family Salticidae, and is thought to have diversified in the Oriental and Palearctic regions.

  • Peckham and Peckham 1907
Peckham, G. W. and E. G. Peckham. 1907. The Attidae of Borneo. Transactions of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters 15: 603-653. Peckham—The Attidae of Borneo. 603 THE ATTIDAE OF BORNEO. GEORGE W. PECKHAM AND ELIZABETH G. PECKHAM. We owe the opportunity of seeing the Attidae here described to the kindness of Mr. R. Shelford, formerly curator of the Museum of Sarawak, by whom most of them were collected. A few species from our own collection have been included. Where other localities are mentioned, the spiders were collected in the neighborhood of Sarawak. We have followed the classification of Simon, based upon the dentition of the falces, which gives us the three groups, Pluridentati, Fissidentati and Unidentati. PLURIDENTATI. Myrmarachne Shelfordii sp. nov. ♂. Length 5 mm., exclusive of falces. Falx 2 mm. Legs 4132, all slender. A yellowish-brown species with a wide, dark, transverse band on the abdomen. The cephalic part is on a little higher plane than the thoracic, from which it is separated by a slight constriction. The quadrangle of the eyes occupies half of the cephalothorax, is one-fourth wider than long, and is wider behind than in front. The first row is slightly curved downward, with the eyes close together and all large, the middle not twice the lateral. The second row is about halfway between the others, and the third row is as wide as the cephalothorax. The falces are long and horizontal, flattened above and below, with a stout spine on the upper edge at the distal end, opposite the insertion of the 37-S.

  • Salticidae from the Himalayas. the Genus Pancorius Simon, 1902 (Arachnida: Araneae)
Genus Vol. 22(1): 181-190 Wrocław, 30 IV 2011 Salticidae from the Himalayas. The genus Pancorius SIMON, 1902 (Arachnida: Araneae) Piotr Jastrzębski Katedra Zoologii, Akademia Podlaska, Prusa 12, 08-110 Siedlce, Poland, e-mail: [email protected] abstract. Three new species of the jumping spider genus Pancorius SIMON, 1902: P. armatus, P. cadus, P. urnus are described from the Nepal Himalayas. P. magnus Żabka, 1985 is reported for the first time from the Himalayas. Diagnoses, descriptions and drawings of diagnostic characters for those species are given. Check-list and map of horizontal distribution of species of Pancorius from the Himalayas are given. Keywords: arachnology, taxonomy,. Pancorius, new species, jumping spiders, Salticidae, Nepal, Himalaya. INTroDuCTIoN Tradition of investigation of the Himalayas has over 150 years. The precursor of this research was B. H. HODGSON, the British resident. He lives in Nepal from 1822 to 1843. In this period HODGSON explored local fauna. The escalation in the knowledge of Nepal fauna was started after ending of political isolation of Nepal. From 1949 was organized several international research expeditions. Significant participation in these working had researchers from different countries, e.g. from Germany, Great Britain, France, uSA (MARTENS 1979). High number of new species were described from the area, including jumping spiders. one of the greater collection of jumping spiders from Himalayas was gathered by Prof. Jochen MARTENS of the Naturmuseum und Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg. By his courtesy I had an occasion to study the material and this paper is continuation of my studies on Himalayan Salticidae based on J. MARTENS collection.
