  • The Lost Girl Lawrence, David Herbert
The Lost Girl Lawrence, David Herbert Published: 1920 Categorie(s): Fiction, Literary Source: http://gutenberg.net.au 1 About Lawrence: David Herbert Lawrence (11 September 1885 - 2 March 1930) was an important and controversial English writer of the 20th century, whose prolific and diverse output included nov- els, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, paintings, translations, literary criticism and personal letters. His collec- ted works represent an extended reflection upon the dehuman- izing effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vi- tality, spontaneity, sexuality, and instinctive behaviour. Lawrence's unsettling opinions earned him many enemies and he endured hardships, official persecution, censorship and mis- representation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile he called his "savage pilgrimage." At the time of his death, his public reputation was that of a pornographer who had wasted his con- siderable talents. E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, chal- lenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation." Later, the influential Cambridge critic F. R. Leavis championed both his artistic in- tegrity and his moral seriousness, placing much of Lawrence's fiction within the canonical "great tradition" of the English nov- el. He is now generally valued as a visionary thinker and a sig- nificant representative of modernism in English

  • Channeling Wonder: Fairy Tales on Television
REVIEWS 177 REVIEWS Pauline Greenhill and Jill Terry Rudy. (eds.). Channeling Wonder: Fairy Tales on Television. Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 2014. Preface. Acknowledgement. Introduction. Filmography. References. List of Contributors. Index. x+450 pp. $31.99 (paper). ISBN: 978-0814339220. Fairy tales adapted for the screen are not a new phenomenon. However, in the recent decade, the genre has made a spectacular comeback in live-action cinema and on television. Done are the years where fairy tales were almost essentially associated with traditional film animation and children’s culture. They now fully embrace a more mature audience that keeps demanding more stories. In a way, television is unique because of the television series format that allows for variations of the same story and because of its capacity to reach people in their private realms. In this context, Channeling Wonder: Fairy Tales on Television, the first collection of essays dedicated to XX and XXI century fairy tales productions made for television, is a long awaited study. The book is separated into thematic sections. The first, “For and About Kids and Adults”, addresses the concept of audiences. In this section, Ian Brodie and Jodi McDavid’s study offers engaging insights on how a child engages with a television program. Emma Nelson and Ashley Walton’s analysis of Merlin as a socializing narrative is especially interesting for its look at the fan community and how the show has influenced their values and beliefs, an insight that would have brought more to this chapter if it would have been studied further. Don Tresca presents the adaptation of Hansel and Gretel in shows such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Minds, Sherlock, Dollhouse, Lost Girl, Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Simpsons.

  • Who Wouldn't Want to Escape the Cold Winter And
Who wouldn’t want to escape the cold winter and head to Vegas for a few days of discussion, networking and celebrating? If that sounds like a good idea, then ClexaCon may be for you. ClexaCon is the first media and entertainment convention for LGBTQ women and allies, and it’s going to be held March 3-5, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV. There will be featured guests from television and film, including Dominique Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell from Wynonna Earp, Person of Interest‘s Amy Acker, Bomb Girls’ Ali Liebert, Carmilla’s Elise Bauman and Natasha Negovanlis and Lost Girl favorites Zoie Palmer and Rachel Skarsten, as well as networking events, panels, workshops and autograph sessions. For the Toronto born Skarsten, the decision to attend was a no-brainer. “What reason is there to not want to be a part of it,” Skarsten tells The TV Junkies. The actress, who in addition to Lost Girl has also been on Flashpoint, The LA Complex and Beauty and the Beast and currently plays Queen Elizabeth on Reign. “I’ve been very lucky to play some badass women,” she says. Thanks to those women and the shows she’s been a part of, Skarsten is no stranger to fan conventions. “Unlike theater, film and TV actors don’t have the privilege of seeing their audiences’ reactions. There’s such a wonderful energy in that reciprocity. It’s a big part of why I love being an actor,” explains Skarsten. She loves getting to meet fans face to face, and says conventions such as ClexaCon are “a lovely opportunity to experience how they [fans] feel about the show.
