THE ORGANIZATION

The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall (the Corporation) is a registered charitable, not-for-profit organization operating two of ’s premier concert halls. The Corporation was established in 1983 to manage both Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall. Founded on the legacy of Massey Hall’s central role in the vitality of Toronto’s cultural life, the Corporation’s mission is to present a diverse schedule of Canadian and international performing artists of the highest quality from a diverse array of genres and communities.

Over 400 artistic performances are produced, marketed, and staged at the Halls every year. Roy Thomson Hall is home to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the gala screenings of the Toronto International Film Festival as well as being the venue of choice for numerous corporate and private functions.

This is an exciting period of evolution for the Corporation as a revitalized Massey Hall is set to open in late 2021, featuring a rejuvenated concert hall and the addition of new performance stages, expanded and enhanced amenities for patrons, and advanced technological enhancements. The organization is now building its team to meet the challenge.

THE POSITION

The Vice President, Development (VP) is a key member of the senior executive team and is responsible for the development and implementation of The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall's philanthropic fundraising strategy. They will provide leadership, management, and coordination for the Corporation’s individual and institutional fundraising efforts, capital and endowment campaign, and planned giving fundraising. sets priorities, goals and budgets; identifies and cultivates potential donors. They will drive acquisition and retention for all contributed revenue through both innovative and traditional fundraising methods.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising • Working with the President & CEO, assess funding goals and projections into the Corporation’s annual operating plans. • Develop a long-term fundraising strategy that implements effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies in order to increase the number of donors and gift size as well as maximize retention. • Work closely with the President & CEO and Development team to identify and develop strategies to build a major donor pipeline. • Oversee all aspects of fundraising and planned giving programs and initiatives. • Maintain the Corporation existing fundraising programs; research and implement new methods of generating income. • Effectively articulate the mission and impact of the Corporation to deepen relationships with donors, prospects, and high-level supporters, as well as external stakeholders. • Act as an ambassador for the Corporation’s assets and programs. • Represent the Corporation at events, especially at members’ lounges and special events. • Contribute to the Corporation’s membership strategy to integrate with fundraising objectives. • Work closely with the Marketing Department to encourage and convert members to become donors. • Build authentic and meaningful relationships with donors and funders. • Liaise with Marketing and Communications to drive public awareness, communications to donors, and develop supporting materials. • Develop major gift opportunities, research new trust funds, and prepare applications. • Write proposals to obtain grants and prepare presentations to deliver to potential donors and key stakeholders. • Manage donor databases, working with the fundraising committee and overseeing event planning and campaigns. • Work jointly with other departments when necessary to develop the Corporation's fundraising strategy. • Prepare monthly financial reports/updates for the President & CEO, Board of Governors, and Finance Department. • Research and assess the feasibility of new methods of generating income such as corporate fundraising, major gifts work, direct mail, endowments. • Develop and maintain effective systems to support the fundraising functions.

Stewardship • Oversee development of gift agreements and sponsorship contracts, ensuring they adhere to the Corporations Donor & Sponsor Naming Policy. • Steward individual and foundation donors and ensure benefits are administered. • Nurture and manage relationships with major donors, prospects, and volunteers through regular communication and one-on-one, face-to-face meetings and events • Develop relationships with members through regular visits and presence in the member’s lounge. • Oversee and ensure all donor activity is tracked in the Tessitura database. • Ensure that past Governors are keep abreast of Corporation matters through quarterly newsletters. • Oversee that all donations received have the appropriate follow-up and thank-you correspondences.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS • Minimum seven years in fundraising & stewardship in a cultural, NFP, educational, or healthcare organization, or other relevant sectors. • Significant experience in non-profit fundraising, with direct responsibility for comprehensive annual and capital development programs; a cultural or community organization is desirable. • Advanced awareness of fundraising practices and principles in the charitable sector including CRA regulations as they pertain to charitable giving. • Demonstrated success managing a portfolio of major individual prospects through the process of identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. • A measureable record of accomplishment with six and seven figure solicitations. • Established senior contacts with potential donors. • A proven effective “closer,” one who is a goal-oriented pacesetter with a demonstrated ability to create momentum in pursuit of development goals. • A versatile, skilled and effective communicator with the ability to articulate the transformative power and impact of the arts on society. • A strong leader and manager of people who excels at cultivating meaningful relationships with diverse groups. • Demonstrated skills in motivating, directing, and managing staff. • Proven track record of creating and executing strategic development plans and programs that maximum support. • Experience with fundraising databases such as Tessitura. • Previous experience in handling confidential or sensitive information; knowledge of privacy laws including PIPEDA. • Seasoned experience with a Board; understands the role of the Board and how to lead from behind. • Minimum undergraduate degree in a relevant field or experiential equivalent.
