Dascha Polanco, Star of Orange Is the New Black and Mental Health Advocate Community Access 45th Anniversary Good Neighbor Gala On May 2, we will host our 45th Anniversary Good Neighbor Gala. With an important goal to raise $1,200,000 in support of our work, it will demonstrate both the scale of our ambition and the enduring strength of the many partnerships that makes this work possible. Community Access' signature annual fundraiser, the Good Neighbor Gala helps us to expand opportunities for people living with mental health concerns to recover from trauma and discrimination through affordable housing, training, advocacy, and healing-focused services. This year we are honoring our visionary leader, Steve Coe, who will retire in June after four decades as CEO. Date Thursday, May 2, 2019 Time 6 to 9 p.m. Location 583 Park Avenue (at 63 rd Street), Manhattan Gala Chair Dan Wurtzel, President, FirstService Residential New York Honorary Chair John Turturro , Emmy Award-winning actor and director Honoree Steve Coe, retiring CEO of Community Access, Inc. Special Guest: Dascha Polanco, Star of Orange is the New Black and Mental Health Advocate Details Cocktail Hour, Seated Dinner, Call for Support Website www.communityaccess.org/gala More information John Williams: (212) 780-1400, ext. 7772, [email protected] Steve Coe: Lifetime Achievement Honoree An icon in the supportive and affordable housing industry in New York, Steve Coe will retire as Community Access’ CEO in June, 2019 after 40 years of service. He personally chaired the first two New York/New York Advocacy Campaigns and the statewide Campaign for Mental Health Housing, which helped secure financing for thousands of new housing units and led to the formation of the Supportive Housing Network of New York where he served as a founding board member. His impact spans far beyond the programming of Community Access and into the mental health and housing world statewide and nationally. The integrated housing model that Steve developed at Community Access in the 1970s has become industry standard: affordable housing that brings together various populations, including individuals with psychiatric disabilities, low-income families, veterans, and youth aging out of foster care. He also developed the nation’s preeminent peer job training academy and is considered to be one of the nation’s top advocates for the human rights of people with mental health concerns. Steve was one of the first board members of Coalition for the Homeless and is former president of the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation (NYAPRS). He has spearheaded numerous task forces and coalitions advocating for systemic changes that respect the rights of the individual and improve access to health care. Special Guest: Dascha Polanco Critically acclaimed for her performance as Dayanara (“Daya”) Diaz on the Netflix series Orange is the New Black (2013-2018), Dascha has also garnered significant attention for her recent roles in the FX series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and films such as Gimme Shelter , The Cobbler , Joy , and The Perfect Match . Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Dascha earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Hunter College. Dascha has talked openly about her struggles with depression, and has been an outspoken advocate for improving conversations about mental health—particularly within the Latino community, where she has shared that stigma has such a devastating impact in people’s lives. Drawing from involvement in Orange is the New Black , she has also spoken out about the mental health needs of incarcerated women of color. • First Look Program 2021
WELCOME to FIRST LOOK 2021 Welcome to the First Look Festival of 2021! One of my great pleasures as Dean of the School of Cinematic Arts is being able to introduce our festival films each year, and congratulate all the deserving students who contributed to them. This year I am especially proud of the determination and dedication inherent in these projects, as they were completed within the limitations of Covid 19 protocols. Despite this, the work you will see here is of the highest quality, and many will go on to tour the film festival circuit and win awards in the year ahead. They will also serve as calling cards for the talented young professionals who are graduating from the School and launching careers as filmmakers. Our students always depend on their family and friends to help them through their programs. Filmmaking is a challenging endeavor, and it takes a village of encouragement to have the confidence needed to bring a project to fruition. This year our students truly needed support, as our campus was shut down and many of them had to return home. Despite not being able to meet in person, the filmmakers found ways to collaborate. And as their films will attest, did so brilliantly! So please enjoy this year’s festival. And congratulations to all the students whose names appear in the end credits of these films. Elizabeth M. Daley Steven J. Ross/Time Warner Professor and Dean USC School of Cinematic Arts I firmly believe that film has been the major art form of the 20th century, and will continue to have a powerful influence on our culture and society.

Sarah Artt and Anne Schwan, 2016] Screening Women’s Imprisonment: Agency and Exploitation in Orange is the New Black Editors: Sarah Artt and Anne Schwan Based on Piper Kerman’s 2010 memoir Orange is the New Black: My Time in a Women’s Prison, Jenji Kohan’s adaptation for Netflix follows white middle-class New Yorker Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) into the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary where she encounters a diverse community of incarcerated women. Together with House of Cards and Hemlock Grove, Orange is the New Black (OITNB) was one of the first original series commissioned by on-demand streaming platform Netflix. At the time of writing, three seasons, produced by Lionsgate, have screened (2013-2015), with a further four seasons to follow (Littleton 2016). Season one introduces Piper and the audience to the world of the prison, including a core group of women such as Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), Piper’s former girlfriend whose drug smuggling business she had been implicated in ten years prior; Galina “Red” Reznikova (Kate Mulgrew), one of the show’s older women who has built an empire through her role as cook; Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren (Uzo Aduba) who develops a romantic obsession with Piper; Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson (Danielle Brooks), one of a group of black women who challenge Piper’s internalized privilege; butch lesbian Carrie “Big Boo” Black, played by comedian Lea DeLaria; “white trash” drug addict Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett (Taryn Manning) who becomes Piper’s nemesis in season one; Gloria Mendoza (Selenis Leyva) who challenges Red over the kitchen empire; and Dayanara “Daya” Diaz (Dascha Polanco) who falls in love with (and is impregnated by) officer John Bennett (Matt McGorry).
