Community Access 45th Anniversary Good Neighbor Gala On May 2, we will host our 45th Anniversary Good Neighbor Gala. With an important goal to raise $1,200,000 in support of our work, it will demonstrate both the scale of our ambition and the enduring strength of the many partnerships that makes this work possible. Community Access' signature annual fundraiser, the Good Neighbor Gala helps us to expand opportunities for people living with mental health concerns to recover from trauma and discrimination through affordable housing, training, advocacy, and healing-focused services. This year we are honoring our visionary leader, Steve Coe, who will retire in June after four decades as CEO. Date Thursday, May 2, 2019 Time 6 to 9 p.m. Location 583 Park Avenue (at 63 rd Street), Manhattan Gala Chair Dan Wurtzel, President, FirstService Residential New York Honorary Chair John Turturro , Emmy Award-winning actor and director Honoree Steve Coe, retiring CEO of Community Access, Inc. He personally chaired the first two New York/New York Advocacy Campaigns and the statewide Campaign for Mental Health Housing, which helped secure financing for thousands of new housing units and led to the formation of the Supportive Housing Network of New York where he served as a founding board member. His impact spans far beyond the programming of Community Access and into the mental health and housing world statewide and nationally. The integrated housing model that Steve developed at Community Access in the 1970s has become industry standard: affordable housing that brings together various populations, including individuals with psychiatric disabilities, low-income families, veterans, and youth aging out of foster care. He also developed the nation’s preeminent peer job training academy and is considered to be one of the nation’s top advocates for the human rights of people with mental health concerns. Steve was one of the first board members of Coalition for the Homeless and is former president of the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation (NYAPRS). He has spearheaded numerous task forces and coalitions advocating for systemic changes that respect the rights of the individual and improve access to health care. Special Guest: Dascha Polanco Critically acclaimed for her performance as Dayanara (“Daya”) Diaz on the Netflix series Orange is the New Black (2013-2018), Dascha has also garnered significant attention for her recent roles in the FX series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and films such as Gimme Shelter , The Cobbler , Joy , and The Perfect Match . Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Dascha earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Hunter College. Dascha has talked openly about her struggles with depression, and has been an outspoken advocate for improving conversations about mental health—particularly within the Latino community, where she has shared that stigma has such a devastating impact in people’s lives. Drawing from involvement in Orange is the New Black , she has also spoken out about the mental health needs of incarcerated women of color.
