BAM Construction Scotland Education Portfolio BAM CONSTRUCTION Schools Design & Build Experience

BAM Construction have been building in the UK since 1874. Schools, hospitals, university departments, hotels, laboratories, offices, cultural venues and museums… from the iconic to the purely functional.

We’re always focused on delivering locally, while able to draw on international expertise, resources and economies of scale.

In Scotland, we’ve constructed some exemplary buildings in recent years - from the stunning V&A Museum on the waterfront in Dundee to the iconic Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow. BAM developed the SFT Pathfinder Schools exemplars at Lasswade and Eastwood in 2013 and programmes of several new schools for East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire before delivering “Building ’s Future” new schools initiative.

We recently completed three outstanding Primaries, two for Glasgow and another for East Renfrewshire, and our Waid Community Campus project in Fife won the Education Project of the Year award in 2018. Last year we completed the outstanding Jedburgh Intergenerational Community Campus for Borders Council and we are currently finishing the new Madras High School in St Andrews on programme despite delays due to Covid.

Our credentials for quality design and build projects in the Schools sector, delivered on time and on budget, are therefore exemplary.

Page 6 OAKBANK PRIMARY SCHOOL

Perth & Kinross Council, 2016: £9m

Project Description The project brief for Oakbank was ambitious in terms of the quality of the teaching space and environment requirements versus the allocated budget. As we were involved from the concept design stage, we were in a position to make design suggestions and put forward bold ideas for consideration by Perth & Kinross Council.

Designed by Holmes Miller Architects, whom we collaborated closely with from the concept design stage through to Construction, understanding and endorsing their approach to design delivery and managing the CDP elements and design production schedules.

We also worked effectively with Holmes Miller through our commitment to BIM on the project, where the production of coordinated design information was accelerated through interrogation of the 3D models by our respective teams.

The envelope consisted primarily of facing brick and aluminium glazing with metal cladding to areas less susceptible to impact damage. We principally used natural ventilation with a combination of underfloor and tempered air heating to ensure maximum flexibility of the building and achieved BREEAM “Very Good”, as defined by the Employer’s Requirements.

A building predominantly clad in masonry and precast concrete, it also provided a 60/60 nursery and facilities for community use.

We first started to see the curriculum for excellence inspiration in this design and our team had to work with the schools to gather support behind this concept as well as working with the community in what was a very emotive sea change for them in the coming together of these institutions.

Page 11 Secondary School Experience JEDBURGH INTERGENERATIONAL COMMUNITY CAMPUS

Page 23 DUMBARTON ACADEMY

West Dunbartonshire Council, 2013: £15m

Project Description This high school was constructed in the grounds of the existing Victorian school, using a precast concrete frame and envelope construction to all areas, which we selected in our role as D&B Contractor. This robust finish both internally and externally offered a low maintenance solution for our Client.

The overall GIFA for the school was 10,331m² and designed for a school roll of 720 pupils. This equates to 14.3m² per pupil which is above the 12m² advised by SFT. This result is skewed however by the communal sports areas which have been constructed and serve a dual purpose of facilities for both the school and local community.

Page 24 CLYDEBANK HIGH SCHOOL

West Dunbartonshire Council, 2011: £28m

Project Description One of four schools constructed as part of the West Dunbartonshire PPP Schools programme, Clydebank High School is a direct replacement for its existing namesake.

The main entrance and admin facilities are contained within a feature oval drum signalling the school as a landmark within the local community. A simple plan of three main wings, each with clear circulation routes, disguises a complex interdependency of departments and complimentary educational facilities, with flexible space allowing separation of school and community services.
