BAM Construction Scotland Education Portfolio BAM CONSTRUCTION Schools Design & Build Experience BAM Construction have been building in the UK since 1874. Schools, hospitals, university departments, hotels, laboratories, offices, cultural venues and museums… from the iconic to the purely functional. We’re always focused on delivering locally, while able to draw on international expertise, resources and economies of scale. In Scotland, we’ve constructed some exemplary buildings in recent years - from the stunning V&A Museum on the waterfront in Dundee to the iconic Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow. BAM developed the SFT Pathfinder Schools exemplars at Lasswade and Eastwood in 2013 and programmes of several new schools for East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire before delivering “Building Fife’s Future” new schools initiative. We recently completed three outstanding Primaries, two for Glasgow and another for East Renfrewshire, and our Waid Community Campus project in Fife won the Education Project of the Year award in 2018. Last year we completed the outstanding Jedburgh Intergenerational Community Campus for Borders Council and we are currently finishing the new Madras High School in St Andrews on programme despite delays due to Covid. Our credentials for quality design and build projects in the Schools sector, delivered on time and on budget, are therefore exemplary. BAM: Building a sustainable tomorrow Primary School Experience MAIDENHILL PRIMARY SCHOOL East Renfrewshire Council, 2019: £13m Project Description Completed in the Summer of 2019, Maidenhill Primary School is located within a green field site owned by East Renfrewshire Council that forms part of the wider Maidenhill housing development master plan The school provides a two-stream non-denominational primary school for 444 pupils, together with a nursery for 120 children. The circular nursery joined to one side of the school has its’ own central flexible space, which can be used for meals or as a fifth play / teaching space with its own small feature seating, and above the central space there is a small snug “treehouse” for storytelling and working with smaller groups of pupils. As well as being a new educational centre for excellence, the campus provides assets to the new local community with access to external sport, educational and social spaces within the site. Page 4 BLAIRDARDIE PRIMARY SCHOOL Glasgow City Council, 2019: £12m Project Description Blairdardie Primary School, completed during spring 2019 for Glasgow City Council and hubWS was designed by Holmes Miller, and is sited in the grounds of the school it replaces. The outstanding levels of co-operation and engagement with the existing school and community were particularly praised by Glasgow CC. The striking new school is a prominent new landmark on Great Western Road and accommodates up to 462 pupils. It provides a truly inspiring and flexible learning environment that offers a fresh contemporary look and feel and has been constructed and finished to achieve a very high level of quality throughout. A four court gym hall provides additional functionality and value as this will be made available for the whole community. Page 5 CARNTYNE PRIMARY SCHOOL Glasgow City Council, 2019: £7m Project Description Carntyne Primary School, completed summer 2019 for Glasgow City Council and hubWS, is a 2 storey building with mono pitched roof and brickwork façade. It was designed by architects Holmes Miller and is sited next to the school it replaces, requiring a second phase of hard and soft landscaping following building completion. The new primary school, in the Carntyne area of Glasgow, is a new £7.1m education facility accommodating up to 231 pupils. The new school provides an inspiring learning environment with a fresh contemporary look and feel, coupled with a high quality finish throughout. Page 6 OAKBANK PRIMARY SCHOOL Perth & Kinross Council, 2016: £9m Project Description The project brief for Oakbank was ambitious in terms of the quality of the teaching space and environment requirements versus the allocated budget. As we were involved from the concept design stage, we were in a position to make design suggestions and put forward bold ideas for consideration by Perth & Kinross Council. Designed by Holmes Miller Architects, whom we collaborated closely with from the concept design stage through to Construction, understanding and endorsing their approach to design delivery and managing the CDP elements and design production schedules. We also worked effectively with Holmes Miller through our commitment to BIM on the project, where the production of coordinated design information was accelerated through interrogation of the 3D models by our respective teams. Page 7 CRIEFF PRIMARY SCHOOL Perth & Kinross Council, 2015: £9m Project Description This 431 pupil primary school, complete with 60/60 nursery accommodation, was delivered in June 2015 for Perth & Kinross Council under the East Central Hub Territory Framework. It is a steel framed two storey construction with brickwork predominant to the facade, broken by precast concrete feature panel areas and the extensive use of glass to provide natural light where possible. Page 8 BURNTISLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Fife Council, 2014: £11m Project Description We successfully completed the new Burntisland Primary School as part of the Building Fife’s Future [BFF] Programme under the procurement banner of the East Central Hub. The school has a roll of 631 pupils together with an 80/80 nursery. This project was handed over on time and within budget, with the final account agreed within 6 weeks of completion of the contract. The first phase of the project was the relocation of sports pitches and a play park on the site to allow the school to be constructed in the 2nd phase. Page 9 ST EUNAN’S PRIMARY SCHOOL West Dunbartonshire Council, 2010: £10m Project Description A new Primary School for 360 pupils with a 30:30 nursery built on the same site as the St Peter the Apostle High School. St Eunan’s was designed by our team utilising a structural steel frame and composite concrete deck solution on a piled foundation design. The envelope consisted primarily of facing brick and aluminium glazing with metal cladding to areas less susceptible to impact damage. We principally used natural ventilation with a combination of underfloor and tempered air heating to ensure maximum flexibility of the building and achieved BREEAM “Very Good”, as defined by the Employer’s Requirements. Page 10 NIDDRIE MILL & ST FRANCIS PRIMARY SCHOOLS City of Edinburgh Council, 2008: £16m Project Description A primary school campus to accommodate the re-development of Craigmillar, bringing the two schools together as well as increased pupil places for the expected increase in populous. A building predominantly clad in masonry and precast concrete, it also provided a 60/60 nursery and facilities for community use. We first started to see the curriculum for excellence inspiration in this design and our team had to work with the schools to gather support behind this concept as well as working with the community in what was a very emotive sea change for them in the coming together of these institutions. Page 11 Secondary School Experience JEDBURGH INTERGENERATIONAL COMMUNITY CAMPUS Borders Council, 2020: £32m Project Description The new Jedburgh Campus was completed on time and budget for Scottish Borders Council early in 2020. The Campus is an innovative learning space which will serve 2 to 18 year olds, as well as providing further education opportunities and community facilities It replaces all three schools in the town and will have provision for nursery, primary, secondary and additional support needs pupils. Community facilities include a multi-use games area, 2G hockey pitch, 3G sports pitch, 100m synthetic running track, 300m grass track and gym. Alongside classrooms, there is a rural skills area, a flexible hall space that can be used for multiple activities such as community events, sport, dance or drama classes and a café. The public library and contact centre are also housed in the campus which aims to cater for all ages of the community in one location. Page 13 WAID COMMUNITY CAMPUS Fife Council, 2017: £22m Project Description This replacement for Waid Academy provides secondary school accommodation for up to 800 pupils, along with a community library, local office and other council services, all under one roof. The development is designed to enhance opportunities for community learning and provide access to improved sports and recreational facilities, including a new all-weather pitch which will cater for football and rugby up to international standards. The school responds to the Curriculum for Excellence with forward thinking approaches to learning environment in terms of class clusters, teaching pods and other open plan, inclusive concepts. Page 14 BARRHEAD HIGH SCHOOL East Renfrewshire Council, 2017: £27m Project Description The new High School was built on the same site as an existing school on Aurs Road in Barrhead, in a 72 week Phase 1 programme and the old school was demolished to make way for new car parking, external space and sports facilities in Phase 2 of the contract. The design follows the SFT Pathfinder Schools principals developed and delivered on BAM’s earlier exemplar projects at Eastwood and Lasswade. The Sports and PE facilities house a Games Hall, Dance Studio and Gymnasium. These sports facilities are designed for generous use by the local community and externally include a 3G football and hockey pitch.
