After a delayed announcement due to the various catastrophic events across Latin-America, the list of nominees for the 18th Annual Latin Grammy awards was shared. The most im- portant awards have contenders from all sides of Latin music, with some surprising choices. Here’s what we think: RECORD OF THE YEAR: Most likely to win: “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee. Our pick: “Guerra,” Residente. Record of the Year is perhaps the most coveted award. The Latin Grammy’s have a reputation of balancing popular- ity with artistic merit when choosing the winners. Although Residente’s adventur- ous and ingenious ode to war is a stand-out from his self-titled album (which we reviewed in the past), “Despacito” is as ubiquitous and global as a Latin American song gets, with the help of catchy beats and hooks and a very tropical beat. ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Most likely to win: “Residente,” Residente. Our pick: “Residente,” Residente. Residente’s status as the most awarded act in Latin Grammy history might weigh in this decision. Although Mon Laferte’s “La Trenza” is a successful celebration of culture, Residente’s socially-conscious masterpiece deserves the Album of the Year prize more than any other nominee. José Revueltas was a Mexican socialist writer and political activist. He was born in the town of Canal- tan in the Mexican state of Durango in 1914. He and his siblings became prominent left-wing artistic figures in Mexico. His brother Fermin became a famous painter and muralist. His sister, Rosaura Revueltas, a Mexican movie star, would be blacklisted from Hollywood and deported for her starring role in the film about striking miners in New Mexico,“Salt of the Earth.” His other brother, Silvestre Revueltas, went on to become a famous violin player, music composer and conductor. He did the music scores for many classic Mexican films in the 1930’s and 40’s. He is remembered for one of his movies about Pancho Villa where he appears on screen playing piano in a cantina.
