Commencement Speaker Jan Neuharth Jan Neuharth, an attorney and author, is Chair and CEO of the Freedom Forum, a nonpartisan foundation that is dedicated to free expression and the five freedoms of the First Amendment. The Freedom Forum is the main funder of the operations of the Newseum, a 250,000-square-foot interactive museum of news in Washington, DC, and the Newseum Institute, whose initiatives include the First Amendment Center, the Religious Freedom Center, NewseumEd, and the Al Neuharth Media Center at USD. Jan Neuharth’s father, Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today and the former Chair and CEO of the Gannett media company, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota in 1950. A graduate of the University of Florida and Vanderbilt Law School, Jan Neuharth is the founder and President of Paper Chase Farms, Inc., an equestrian company based in Middleburg, VA, and serves on the boards of Middleburg Bank, the Library of Virginia Foundation, and the Middleburg Forum. She is the former Chair of the National Council at Vanderbilt Law School. A member of the California Bar and admitted as an attorney and counselor of the United States Supreme Court, Jan Neuharth formerly worked for Senator Howard Baker in Washington, DC and Nashville, Tennessee; for Louis Harris International in London, England; and practiced law with Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker in Los Angeles, California.
