The QLine and the People Mover" Introduction On May 12, 2017 a new streetcar – the QLine – began operating in Detroit, running along a 3.3- mile (6.6-mile return) route on Woodward Avenue, one of the central north-south roads in the city. This project is one example of the return to prominence of streetcars in the (re)development of American cities. Having fallen into disuse and abandonment in hundreds of American cities during the early part of the 20th century, this form of public transit has returned in many cities including, for example, Dallas, Cincinnati, Kansas City, and Portland. As streetcar services have returned to prominence, so too has the debate about their utility as a form of public transit, the function they serve in a city, and who they serve (Brown 2013; Culver 2017). These debates are evident in the case of Detroit. Proponents of the QLine – most prominently the individuals and organizations that advocated for its creation and provided the majority of the start-up capital – have praised the streetcar for acting as a spur to development, for being a forward-thinking transit system and for acting as a first step towards a comprehensive regional transit system in Metro Detroit (see M-1 Rail 2018). -

Transdev Australasia submission for: NTC - Developing a heavy vehicle fatigue data framework Company Overview Transdev Australasia (Transdev) is a public transport operator in Australia and New Zealand − delivering more than 120 million customer journeys each year. The company employs 5,300 staff across five modes of transport in seven distinct locations across Australasia. Transdev has light rail operations in Sydney, and bus operations in metropolitan Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin. It operates ferries in Brisbane and in Sydney in a joint venture with Transfield Services. Response for consideration Summary of Fatigue issues – In principle, Transdev considers that the heavy vehicle fatigue data framework (the framework) is a step in the right direction for industry. The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and framework should encapsulate every aspect of compliance, monitoring and review across all states and territories prior to establishing standard data criteria for the framework. This means that legislation, policy, enforcement, medical standards, data capturing and reporting all need to be consistent or standardised across all jurisdictions. The HVNL currently regulates heavy vehicle driver fatigue in every Australian jurisdiction except WA and the NT. With regards to priorities in the operation of Metropolitan and Regional busses, it is the quantity and quality of sleep that impacts on driver well-being, which in turn affects their fitness to work and should be examined together as a whole. The framework was established for heavy vehicle drivers who typically do long haul journeys that are most at risk. The current framework has a minimal focus on Metropolitan/Regional bus drivers, who work shifts and fluctuate under / above the 100km radius. -

SECOND EDITION Improving the Connection between Transit and Land Use SOUTH FLORIDA TRANSIT RESOURCE GUIDE June 2015 June 15, 2015 Dear Colleague: The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) is pleased to introduce the second edition of the South Florida Transit Resource Guide, which demonstrates the vital connection between transportation and land use throughout Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. The first edition was well received and was awarded an honorable mention in the 2010 Transportation Planning Excellence Awards sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Decisions involving transportation and land use directly affect our quality of life and the economic vitality of the region. The choices we make influence how much free time we have, where we live and work, our recreational activities, how we travel, the state of our environment, and so much more. The SFRTA seeks to coordinate, develop and implement, in cooperation with all appropriate levels of government, private enterprise and citizens a regional transportation system in South Florida that ensures mobility, the advancement of sustainable growth and improvement in the quality of life for future generations. Increased development around Tri-Rail stations not only positively impacts Tri-Rail ridership, but can also influence regional growth as it pertains to transportation and land use. Station area- development decisions are governed by the city or county in which each station is located. This publication profiles the many factors which affect how the cities and counties promote station- area development. In summary, we hope this document provides the information needed to help communities and organizations make decisions which can improve the connection between land use and transportation. -

Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority In the latter part of 2000, the City of Cincinnati, Ohio and Hamilton County, Ohio collaborated to create the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority. This new entity would reconstitute an existing port authority that the two governments had formed earlier to spearhead the redevelopment of brownfield sites. Our newly created Port Authority was given a dual mission of overseeing The Banks Central Riverfront Project envisioned by the City, the County, and the Riverfront Advisors Commission, as well as continuing the brownfield redevelopment activities of our predecessor agency. Thus, we began our mission with a vision for a strong, vibrant Greater Cincinnati Region and rich opportunities to plan and build on economic development successes for future generations. Our Mission The mission of the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority is two-fold: •It is charged with the implementation of the Central Riverfront Urban Design Master Plan for the mixed-use redevelopment of Cincinnati’s Central Riverfront Area, commonly referred to as “The Banks.” •It is also charged with facilitating the redevelopment of properties in Hamilton County that are environmentally contaminated or perceived to be contaminated and are now vacant, abandoned, idle or underutilized due to the real or perceived contamination.
