Lycaon, the Son of Pelasgus (One of Lycaon (PL 12) Ithe “First Humans”) Was a King of Arcadia n ancient times, Lycaon, the son of Pelasgus (one of Lycaon (PL 12) Ithe “first humans”) was a king of Arcadia. Wicked and cruel, Lycaon believed that he could trick the gods.     Lycaon: Ovid's Deceptive Paradigm in Metamorphoses 1 WILLIAM S. ANDERSON As the first story of human metamorphosis in Ovid's poem, the account of Lycaon naturally tempts us to read it as paradigmatic and programmatic. We may yield to that temptation in two important respects: A. We might read the story as a whole as a coherent structure that anticipates the organization and rationale of subsequent tales. B. We might focus on the actual description of metamorphosis, where we expect Ovid to pursue themes and imply a meaning in change that he would then regularly employ in later parts of the poem. Both aspects of the Lycaon-paradigm have been commonly read in the past.' Increasingly, however, scholars have begun to question A and to dispute some details of B.^ It is my purpose in this paper to review the entire matter: to suggest that Ovid carefully pretended to use Lycaon as a paradigm, that he then told the story so as to sabotage the status of the model, and that the subsequent talcs of Book 1 and thereafter, by their patent flouting of the Lycaon-pattem, correct, re-shape, and then ' R. Each transfer of the arms is examined in relation to the poem’s dramatic action, characterisation, and representation of social institutions and ethical values. Modern anthropological and economic approaches are employed in order to elucidate standard elements surrounding certain types of exchange. Nevertheless, the study primarily involves textual analysis of the Iliadic narratives recounting the circulation-process of Achilles’ arms, with frequent reference to the general context of Homeric exchange and re-exchange. The origin of the armour as a wedding gift to Peleus for his marriage to Thetis and its consequent bequest to Achilles signifies it as the hero’s inalienable possession and marks it as the symbol of his fate in the Iliad . Similarly to the armour, the spear, a gift of Cheiron to Peleus, is later inherited by his son. Achilles’ own bond to Cheiron makes this weapon another inalienable possession of the hero. As the centaur’s legacy to his pupil, the spear symbolises Achilles’ awareness of his coming death. In the present time of the Iliad , ii Achilles lends his armour to Patroclus under conditions that indicate his continuing ownership over his panoply and ensure the safe use of the divine weapons by his friend.

    1 On the Corinthian Column at the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae* Antonios Thodis Introduction The Greek Temple, despite its persistence and role as a paradigm of architectural beauty in Western Architecture discourse for centuries, poses substantial questions regarding its source of inspiration and the origin of some of its most essential architectural and typological elements. Other than the passing accounts of Pliny and Theophrastus, our current understanding relies upon Pausanias1 and Vitruvius,2 who wrote from a Hellenistic perspective, upon archaeology, or upon such efforts to link philosophy with temple building as Hahn’s Anaximander and the Architects (2001). The temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae (fifth century B.C.) by Ictinus, located in a remote but sacred part of mountainous Arcadia, exhibits unique architectural peculiarities. The most prominent of these are the earliest known coexistence of the three Classical Orders and appearance of the Corinthian column, which make it a fundamental monument for scholarly investigation into the Greek temple’s typical architectural elements and the aspirations of its builders and commissioners influenced by religious developments and the inventive spirit of Classical period.     Greek mythology focus on the Trojan War and its aftermath. Two poems by Homer's near contemporary Hesiod, the Theogony and the Works and Days, contain accounts of the genesis of the world, the succession of divine rulers, the succession of human ages, the origin of human woes, and the ori- gin of sacrificial practices. Myths are also preserved in the Homeric Hymns, in fragments of epic poems of the Epic Cycle, in lyric poems, in the works of the tragedians of the fifth century BC, in writings of scholars and poets of the Hellenistic Age, and in texts from the time of the Roman Empire by writers such as Plutarch and Pausanias. Archaeological findings provide a principal source of detail about Greek mythology, with gods and heroes featured prominently in the decoration of many arti- facts. Geometric designs on pottery of the eighth cen- tury BC depict scenes from the Trojan cycle as well as the adventures of Heracles. In the succeeding Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods, Homeric and various other mythological scenes appear, supplementing the ex- isting literary evidence.[2] Greek mythology has had an extensive influence on the culture, arts, and literature of Western civilization and remains part of Western heritage and language.
