  • John Curtice, Stephen Fisher, Robert Ford and Patrick English
APPENDIX 1: THE RESULtS ANaLYSED John Curtice, Stephen Fisher, Robert Ford and Patrick English The outcome of the 2017 election seems to pose a serious challenge to claims about the decline of Britain’s two-party system. No less than 84.5% of the UK-wide vote was cast for either the Conservatives or Labour, well above the proportion at any election since 1970. At 2.88, the effective number of parties in the electorate (as conventionally calculated) is still somewhat above two, but is now well down on the figure of 3.71 that pertained as recently as 2010.1 But the term ‘two-party system’, is often used to imply more than two parties dominating the vote. Amongst other things, it is also taken to refer to a system in which power and ministerial office alternate between the Conservatives and Labour, one of whom, thanks to the electoral system, always enjoys an overall majority in the House of Commons. But in 2017 no single party secured an overall major- ity, and the election resulted in a minority Conservative government backed by a ‘confidence and supply’ arrangement with the DUP. This fol- lows an election in 2010 which also resulted in a hung parliament (and the formation of the country’s first post-war coalition) and another in 2015 that gave the Conservatives a majority of just 12, a majority that in precipi- tating the early 2017 ballot Theresa May indicated was too small. There is another reason to question whether the outcome of the 2017 election necessarily represented a return to some kind of ‘normality’.

Twenty-six interviews with recent UK party leaders were analysed in terms of questions, replies, and personalisation. The majority of personalised responses contained elements of criticism, although over a quarter were more amicable.

Journal of Social and Political Psychology jspp.psychopen.eu | 2195-3325 Original Research Reports “You’re Important, Jeremy, but Not That Important”: Personalised Responses and Equivocation in Political Interviews Maurice Waddle* a, Peter Bull ab [a] Department of Psychology, University of York, York, United Kingdom. [b] Department of Psychology, University of Salford, Manchester, United Kingdom. Abstract This study was an assessment of personalised equivocation in political interviews, namely, politicians’ responses to questions which, in lieu of an explicit reply, are directed personally at the interviewer. Twenty-six interviews with recent UK party leaders were analysed in terms of questions, replies, and personalisation. The majority of personalised responses contained elements of criticism, although over a quarter were more amicable. For the eight featured politicians, the use of such responses was adjudged to be more about individual communicative style than their position on the political spectrum. Only one politician did not respond in this manner, indicating a more widespread use of personalisation than was previously suggested. Furthermore, an evaluation of interviewer follow-ups showed its effectiveness as a diversionary tactic in the face of troublesome questions. In terms of the proportion of questions which receive a full reply, a general reply rate analysis highlighted how recent political leaders have changed little from their predecessors. Keywords: personalization, political discourse, evasion, reply rate, personal attacks, flattery, banter Non-Technical Summary Background Commentators and researchers have highlighted an occasional tendency for some politicians, when faced with a challenging question, to direct their response personally at the interviewer. Such behaviour is often referred to, metaphorically, as “playing the man, not the ball”.

AVRASYA İNCELEMELERİ MERKEZİ CENTER FOR EURASIAN STUDIES EU REFERENDUM: SADIQ KHAN JOINS PM TO URGE EU REMAIN VOTE - 30.05.2016 30.05.2016 BBC Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is to share a platform with Prime Minister David Cameron at a Remain rally later. They will jointly launch a Britain Stronger In Europe battle bus, despite Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn refusing to campaign with Mr Cameron. It comes after Mr Cameron criticised Mr Khan's "poor judgement" during the London mayoral election. Mr Khan defended his decision to campaign publicly with the Tory PM and said it was in London's interest. Brexit 'huge blow' to UK economy EU referendum: All you need to know Issues guide: Explore the arguments "Is it in London's interest for me to hold grudges? Is it in London's interests for the mayor of London to be at permanent war with the Conservative prime minister?" Mr Khan asked on ITV's Peston On Sunday. "We're never going to be best friends, but what is important is that the mayor of London argues the case for London and for Londoners to remain in the European Union. "This debate is far more important than David Cameron or me. "It's about our city's future and country's future." During London's mayoral election race, Mr Cameron repeatedly attacked Mr Khan for having a history of sharing platforms with extremists, which Mr Khan rejected. At Prime Minister's Question Time in the Commons some Labour MPs denounced Mr Cameron as a racist when he attacked Mr Khan's judgment.

  • Politics Pre-University (Extension Material)
Subject: Politics Pre-University (Extension Material) Essentially, the key preparation for undergraduate Politics is to keep your eyes in a book while simultaneously listening to the world around you. Please find below a collection of works that should enable you to do just that. The Origins of Totalitarianism – Hannah Arendt (1951) An iconic piece of political philosophy that may seem quite old but in regards to the overall political history of the world up until now, it is considered as modern and is relevant particularly, in the light of Trump's election). While you may not agree with her views on certain issues (and some experts don't) it is an interesting read that gives great insight into the totalitarian governments that may be being established around the world today. Article about this on the Guardian linking her book to the Age of Trump: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/feb/01/totalitarianism-in-age-donald-trump-lessons-from-hannah-arendt-protests Prisoners of Geography – Tim Marshall (2015) I read this book when it first came out as a recommendation from a friend and I wasn't disappointed. While it may not be the most comprehensive book about geopolitics that has ever been written, I do think that it is a great introduction to how geography can affect the paths of success or failures that nations and continents may take. It is very useful for A level Geography too and there are a number of copies in the library. Why Nations Fail – Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson (2012) This is a fascinating book as it connects economics with politics to examine why various nations do not succeed while others do.
