The series is intended to target an academic audience interested in the following areas: – Traditional fields of humanities whose research paths are focused on issues of current concern; – New fields of humanities emerged to meet the demands of societal changes; – Multi/Inter/Cross/Transdisciplinary dialogues between humanities and social and/or natural sciences; – Humanities “in disguise”, that is, those fields (currently belonging to other spheres), that remain rooted in a humanistic vision of the world; – Forms of investigations and reflections, in which the humanities monitor and critically assess their scientific status and social condition; – Forms of research animated by creative and innovative humanities-based

  • Colonial Exhibitions and World Fairs As Precursors of Digital Public Space: Digital Citizenship & Historical Comparisons’
THIS IS THE PROVISIONAL AND UNCORRECTED TEXT OF THE PAPER THAT I WILL PRESENT IN THE PANEL ON SPECTACLE. PLEASE DO NOT CITE OR DOWNLOAD) Berteke Waaldijk Berteke Waaldijk Utrecht University [email protected] ‘Colonial exhibitions and world fairs as precursors of digital public space: digital citizenship & historical comparisons’ paper for Media in Transition 2, Boston, May 10-12, 2002 panel: Spectacle When I submitted my proposal for this paper I had in mind a wide range of questions dealing with digital citizenship and world fairs as precursors of digital culture. Too many by far for the fifteen minutes available. Seeing that I would be presenting in the context of a panel on ‘spectacle’, I have decided to let this context guide me in cutting down my paper. In 1901 visitors to the PanAmerican Exposition in Buffalo were warned: ‘Please remember: the moment you enter the gates, you are part of the show’ (cited by Bennett, Birth of the Museum, p. 68/69, who cites Harris, 1978, who cites the 1901 ‘Short Sermon to Sightseeers’) For some visitors the show was over rather soon, President McKinley was shot at when he visited a reception at the Fair, and he died a few days later, proving that there was no chance of seeing an Exposition without being exposed yourself, and reminding us that politics does not stop when showtime begins. 1 THIS IS THE PROVISIONAL AND UNCORRECTED TEXT OF THE PAPER THAT I WILL PRESENT IN THE PANEL ON SPECTACLE. PLEASE DO NOT CITE OR DOWNLOAD) Berteke Waaldijk Today, students, shoppers, gamers, workers and citizens who log on for education, consumption, entertainment, work or politics in cyberspace hardly need such a warning.

  • 1 the ARGONAUTS of NORTH LIBERTY by Bret Harte PART I
1 THE ARGONAUTS OF NORTH LIBERTY By Bret Harte PART I CHAPTER I The bell of the North Liberty Second Presbyterian Church had just ceased ringing. North Liberty, Connecticut, never on any day a cheerful town, was always bleaker and more cheerless on the seventh, when the Sabbath sun, after vainly trying to coax a smile of reciprocal kindliness from the drawn curtains and half-closed shutters of the austere dwellings and the equally sealed and hard-set churchgoing faces of the people, at last settled down into a blank stare of stony astonishment. On this chilly March evening of the year 1850, that stare had kindled into an offended sunset and an angry night that furiously spat sleet and hail in the faces of the worshippers, and made them fight their way to the church, step by step, with bent heads and fiercely compressed lips, until they seemed to be carrying its forbidding portals at the point of their umbrellas. Within that sacred but graceless edifice, the rigors of the hour and occasion reached their climax. The shivering gas-jets lit up the austere pallor of the bare walls, and the hollow, shell-like sweep of colorless vacuity behind the cold communion table. The chill of despair and hopeless renunciation was in the air, untempered by any glow from the sealed air-tight stove that seemed only to bring out a lukewarm exhalation of wet clothes and cheaply dyed umbrellas. Nor did the presence of the worshippers themselves impart any life to the dreary apartment. Scattered throughout the white pews, in dull, shapeless, neutral blotches, rigidly separated from each other, they seemed only to accent the colorless church and the emptiness of all things.

It was a great conference, and a good one to cut my presidential teeth on as I knew many of the Idahoans attending, and had just worked with most of the vendors at the August PNLA conference in Post Falls . As a matter of fact, I was so busy enjoying the ILA conference that I almost missed my opportunity to speak at the business meeting! March 12, 2009 saw me heading off to Kodiak, Alaska for the Alaska Library Association's Annual Conference. Flying out of Pocatello these days means that you must fly first to Salt Lake City, Utah, a lovely city and a fine airport, but is a route that does not make for a direct flight to anywhere.

  • To Serve and Protect
TO SERVE AND PROTECT by Natasha Solten “ in the secret places where what ends meets what is starting…” Juan Ramon Jimenez Sid finally exited Sonny’s office much to the collective relief of Sonny and Vinnie, who both stood shaking their heads, simultaneously sighing their mutual exasperation. Sid left a kind of weasely smell on the air, which made Vinnie’s nose wrinkle. Sonny said, “I wanna throttle that guy so bad.” Vinnie said, “How do Harvard guys get to be such morons?” Sonny turned. “Not like those Fordham guys, right?” Vinnie shot him a wry, closed-mouthed grin. Standing in front of the glass desk, Sonny’s gaze lingered on him and Vinnie watched with perhaps too much pleasure as those lips formed into what Vinnie had come to think of as his smile—the smile Sonny reserved for him and him alone. Sonny’s scowl could be damning, his grin exciting, but that smile was intoxicating like a warm brandy buzz. When it was the real thing it affected Sonny’s eyes, too, making them more gold than brown, making them seem to sparkle. Then the gaze would drop easily and lightly, taking in Vinnie’s entire form before moving back to light again on Vinnie’s face. He wasn’t even sure Sonny was conscious of the fact that he often did that—gave Vinnie the once-over—taking in the whole picture. At first Vinnie had told himself Sonny was just appreciating the suits he’d bought him, seeing what his money had paid for. But Sonny did it when Vinnie wore his jeans and leather jacket.

  • The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies
THE ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO REMIX STUDIES The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies comprises contemporary texts by key authors and artists who are active in the emerging field of remix studies. As an organic interna- tional movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authen- ticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aes- thetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom. Eduardo Navas is the author of Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling (Springer, 2012). He researches and teaches principles of cultural analytics and digital humanities in the School of Visual Arts at The Pennsylvania State University, PA. Navas is a 2010–12 Post- Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen, Norway, and received his PhD from the Program of Art and Media History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California in San Diego. Owen Gallagher received his PhD in Visual Culture from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. He is the founder of TotalRecut.com, an online com- munity archive of remix videos, and a co-founder of the Remix Theory & Praxis seminar group.

  • Agents of Metal Pt. 1
Agents of Metal Part 1 Lasse Öörni 1 2 NaNoWriMo 2008. Edited later. Any similarities or references to actual above top secret organizations, operations and fnords may not be purely coincidental. Read at own risk. Many thanks to Lionel Gendre for co-creating the Agent concept and the Three Words! 3 4 1. Ian felt it just before Gwen, the spherical lead systems administrator and BOFH of the BOFHs, actually opened her mouth to exclaim. In the space of that fraction of a second, the atmosphere of the server room had changed to something that was markedly wrong. “Fuck!” That harshly shouted word snapped him completely out of his stupor, already expecting the weekend, and back into hardcore action mode. He swiveled around in his chair and saw her looking intently at the flat-screen monitor of her main workstation. But he could not yet deduce what had agitated her. “Cut the power,” she yelled. “What?” Ian could not quite follow. “The fucking comms rack!” Cutting off network access to the main servers and isolating each of the subnets in the building on their own was normally not healthy to even think about, no matter it was Friday. However, in the space of roughly five months Ian had known Gwen, he had learned that her judgment was better left unchallenged. It had never failed so far. He reached out and yanked the power cord. 5 The led displays of the routers and switches in the network equipment rack died, and their ventilation fans slowed down to a halt. The droning hum of the servers and the air conditioning went on, but the change was clearly noticeable: the server room simply was not supposed to sound like this.

  • STEEL for an AGE 4.Pdf
STOP THE MADNESS! •2• •3• Greg War: Sabathan contacted me in June 2009 to join the band. At that time the band consisted of Sabathan, David DC and the first singer Laurent. The name HORACLE had already been chosen by Sabathan and David DC. I noticed in an interview you did for That’s Metal #18 that Sabathan (the band’s bassist and founder) has been in bands since the mid-80s, but what about the rest of you guys? What have you been up to before forming/joining HORACLE? Drinking and listening to Metal doesn’t count as an answer, musically I mean… Terry: I played in a couple local bands before, nothing big though. I am in another band too but we struggle with the line-up since... quite a while now... Though I also have another project in preparation for next year! Dyno: I’ve made my classical studies. Then I bought my first electric guitar playing old MAIDEN, METALLICA and GNR’s stuff. I’ve played in several local bands since more than 20 years, but the more established one was my latest before HORACLE, OIDHEHE BAALTINNE (Black Death Metal with pagan inspirations). We had an EP and played gigs in Belgium and France, opening for bands like VADER and MARDUK. We split in 2013, one month before recording a full length album, due to the lack of personal involvement of a part of the musicians. Greg War: Nothing serious for me, musically talking, only a few jams with some friends. So THIS means that HORACLE is my first official band.
