PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Other times it was a seemingly wild game of Six Degrees Of Separation, or an instance of Facebook suggesting I befriend an artist's profile.

  • X-World/5 Re-Releases Futuristic Heavy Metal Album 'New Universal
2015-04-02 09:26 CEST X-World/5 Re-Releases Futuristic Heavy Metal Album ‘New Universal Order’ - The project includes members from Hammerfall, King Diamond And The Cure. Los Angeles, CA, April 2nd, 2015 – The metal super group X-World/5 is re- releasing the album “New Universal Order” on April 7th. The band is a collaboration between Magnus Rosen, Big Swede, Andy LaRocque, Reeves Gabrels & Nils K. Rue.The album was first released in 2008 but will now be available again. The members are based in USA, England, Sweden and Norway. “When me and Magnus first talked about doing a project we wanted to have friends from different parts of the world involved. It turned out to be a pretty interesting line-up,” says Big Swede. The concept for the project was trying to do something new, interesting and futuristic, mixing metal, electronic sounds and powerful vocals, sometimes distorted. “How would a metal band sound 1000 years from now? That’s the question which started it all when me and Big Swede were discussing ideas for the project,” continues Magnus Rosen. “I had Reeves Gabrels in my studio in LA while Andy and Magnus were doing stuff at Andy’s place outside of Gothenburg. Nils did his parts in Norway. Then me and Andy mixed half of the songs each in our own studios. It was a very easy process and because we were located in different parts of the world, it was impossible to get tired of each other and no fighting occurred,” laughs Big Swede. Members: Magnus Rosen (Hammerfall) Big Swede (Refurbished, John Christ) Reeves Gabrels (The Cure) Andy LaRocque (King Diamond) Nils K.

  • Spiritually Uncontrolled Art
Spiritually uncon trolled art: Exploring aesthetics of evil in contemporary music Robert Andersson 2011 Uppsats, magisternivå , 15 hp Religionsvetenskap Människa, natur och religionsprogrammet Handledare: Juan Carlos Gumucio Examinator: Peder Thalén Abstract This essay investigates interpretations of evil as expressed in contemporary music, focusing mainly on lyrics in contemporary popular music. The purpose is to analyze whether there is a certain aesthetic embracing of risk and innovation on display when discussing such subject matters, and to relate such aesthetic connotations to cultural and religious aspects. Lyrical interpretations of evil in a musical context appear to be existent in different forms and are in various ways attempts to integrate the existence of evil acts, as leading to suffering and pain, by incorporating such themes into lyrical material. There appears to be a possible aesthetic embraced when artists are advocating evil acts, however, not totally separable from the aesthetics of the extreme metal scene. Such forms of creative practice appear as reliant on the dialectic between historical perceptions of morality, modern society as globalized, segmented and restructured and the reoccurrence of religion in a secularized perspective. Themes regarding evil appear in this form of aesthetic in different ways to traditional discourse; making use of historical and contemporary images of evil and portraying them as desirable in various ways. In some instances such creative release is also linked to religious belief and practice, making the artistic performance equivalent of a transcendental event. Keywords Aesthetics, contemporary music, culture, extreme metal, evil, modernism, music lyrics. 2 Table of contents Abstract ...................................................................................................................................... 2 Table of contents........................................................................................................................ 3 1.

  • Colonial Exhibitions and World Fairs As Precursors of Digital Public Space: Digital Citizenship & Historical Comparisons’
THIS IS THE PROVISIONAL AND UNCORRECTED TEXT OF THE PAPER THAT I WILL PRESENT IN THE PANEL ON SPECTACLE. PLEASE DO NOT CITE OR DOWNLOAD) Berteke Waaldijk Berteke Waaldijk Utrecht University [email protected] ‘Colonial exhibitions and world fairs as precursors of digital public space: digital citizenship & historical comparisons’ paper for Media in Transition 2, Boston, May 10-12, 2002 panel: Spectacle When I submitted my proposal for this paper I had in mind a wide range of questions dealing with digital citizenship and world fairs as precursors of digital culture. Too many by far for the fifteen minutes available. Seeing that I would be presenting in the context of a panel on ‘spectacle’, I have decided to let this context guide me in cutting down my paper. In 1901 visitors to the PanAmerican Exposition in Buffalo were warned: ‘Please remember: the moment you enter the gates, you are part of the show’ (cited by Bennett, Birth of the Museum, p. 68/69, who cites Harris, 1978, who cites the 1901 ‘Short Sermon to Sightseeers’) For some visitors the show was over rather soon, President McKinley was shot at when he visited a reception at the Fair, and he died a few days later, proving that there was no chance of seeing an Exposition without being exposed yourself, and reminding us that politics does not stop when showtime begins. 1 THIS IS THE PROVISIONAL AND UNCORRECTED TEXT OF THE PAPER THAT I WILL PRESENT IN THE PANEL ON SPECTACLE. PLEASE DO NOT CITE OR DOWNLOAD) Berteke Waaldijk Today, students, shoppers, gamers, workers and citizens who log on for education, consumption, entertainment, work or politics in cyberspace hardly need such a warning.

  • 1 the ARGONAUTS of NORTH LIBERTY by Bret Harte PART I
1 THE ARGONAUTS OF NORTH LIBERTY By Bret Harte PART I CHAPTER I The bell of the North Liberty Second Presbyterian Church had just ceased ringing. North Liberty, Connecticut, never on any day a cheerful town, was always bleaker and more cheerless on the seventh, when the Sabbath sun, after vainly trying to coax a smile of reciprocal kindliness from the drawn curtains and half-closed shutters of the austere dwellings and the equally sealed and hard-set churchgoing faces of the people, at last settled down into a blank stare of stony astonishment. On this chilly March evening of the year 1850, that stare had kindled into an offended sunset and an angry night that furiously spat sleet and hail in the faces of the worshippers, and made them fight their way to the church, step by step, with bent heads and fiercely compressed lips, until they seemed to be carrying its forbidding portals at the point of their umbrellas. Within that sacred but graceless edifice, the rigors of the hour and occasion reached their climax. The shivering gas-jets lit up the austere pallor of the bare walls, and the hollow, shell-like sweep of colorless vacuity behind the cold communion table. The chill of despair and hopeless renunciation was in the air, untempered by any glow from the sealed air-tight stove that seemed only to bring out a lukewarm exhalation of wet clothes and cheaply dyed umbrellas. Nor did the presence of the worshippers themselves impart any life to the dreary apartment. Scattered throughout the white pews, in dull, shapeless, neutral blotches, rigidly separated from each other, they seemed only to accent the colorless church and the emptiness of all things.
