Slumped low in the seat, the 37-year-old actress and lead singer of Hole is wearing baggy faded jeans, a brown pilled sweater, and Birkenstock sandals, her pink toenails twinkling with rhinestones. On her head is a wool knit hat - 1 - that looks like something she found on the street. Last night she sat for three hours while her auburn hair extensions were unglued and cut out. "See?" The Concept Album as Visual-Sonic- Textual Spectacle: The Transmedial Storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Lori Burns University of Ottawa [email protected] Abstract This paper studies the elaboration of the concept album by means of multimodal promotional strategies that include the concert tour, music videos, books, as well as other digital and print materials. Adopting the perspective that the meaning of a concept album emerges in and through a potentially complex network of materials, we can receive and understand concept album storytelling to operate according to multimedial, intermedial and transmedial contexts. This study examines the transmedial storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto concept spectacle as it is developed in and through the material content of the original album, the Coldplay: Live 2012 (Coldplay 2012c) concert film, as well as the paraphonographic materials that extend Mylo Xyloto into a variety of media. KEYWORDS: Concept album, spectacle, multimodality, intermediality, transmediality Introduction In the context of the new millennial industry of popular music, artists from a variety of genres rely heavily upon current technologies and social media platforms to develop elaborate promotional strategies, thus expanding the idea of the concept album to the concert tour, music videos, books, and a range of supplementary materials. “We’re going to make The Rolling Stones look like choirboys.” Alice Cooper lice Cooper still looks like a witch: long, raggedy arms, a thatch of crow-feather hair and a large Captain Hook beaked nose. Even without his kohl eye make-up, his grey-blueA eyes wink out just like they did on his million-selling ’70s album covers. His face is creased and his skin is a little looser, but Alice doesn’t look that different from how he did when he was a threat to American decency. He’s tremendously easy company – warm, gracious and happy to retell well-worn stories, and laughing while he does. You can imagine him holding court with The Hollywood Vampires (his 1970s fraternity of terrifyingly hard-drinking musicians that included Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson and John Lennon), and you can see why celebrities like Johnny Depp regard him as a close friend. Smart and slightly self-effacing, he’s also surprisingly similar to his cameo in Wayne’s World, where he played the dignified elder statesman of rock lecturing his stunned fans with expert detail about the pre-settle- ment history of America. Vincent Damon Furnier may be a sophisticated and sober sixty-eight-year-old, golf-obsessed Republican, but he speaks with real fondness about Alice, often referring to him in the third person. Hearing about the height of his fame (and let’s not forget he was face-on-a-lunchbox, TV-holiday-special, Marvel-comic-about- your-exploits famous), it’s obvious he relishes the controversy he caused, but he never set out to corrupt anyone – only to entertain them. -

Prior to this, the grunge ‘scene’ had been centred on Seattle and the Sub Pop record label. Often described as a cross between punk and heavy metal (Mazullo 719), musically grunge had a ‘dark’, guitar-based sound based around a traditional rock line up (guitar, bass and drums). An unusual feature of the grunge scene was the relatively high proportion of female performers and bands, and this, combined with explicit anti-sexism stances taken by prominent male grunge musicians such as Kurt Cobain, and its close proximity to the feminist Riot Grrrl movement, served to position it as a more gender-neutral scene than many others in ‘rock’. -
