would like to thank the three most important people in my life, my three children, who were patient and understanding when they had to miss time with me because of this endeavor. Also, thanks to my fellow Cazafantasmas, Nacho and Samu, for their friendship, encouragement, understanding, and general buen rollo through this time. x ABSTRACT This dissertation answers the question of how to start spiritual movements amongst young adults and university students in Spain. It begins by examining the current cultural context of present day Spain, exploring why Christianity is in decline. In the Introduction it argues for understanding Spain as being characteristic of Bauman’s liquid modernity. Here the dissertation adopts Bauman’s typologies of liquid modern society being populated by tourists and vagabonds, constantly on the move, but without destination. Chapter One discusses the need for community as the base structure for mission and the importance

    The History of St. Thomas the Apostle The First Fifty Years The following is from a small book commemorating the 50th Anniversary of St. Thomas the Apostle. THE YEAR was 1902, the month was July, the day was the 9th. This date will never be forgotten as it was on this day that His Excellency, the Most Reverend John J. Monaghan, Bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington, had purchased the property, near Fourth Street and Grant Avenue, as the site for a new Catholic Church and initiated the erection thereon of a combined church and school to be named in honor of the patron saint of the first Bishop of Wilmington, Most Reverend Thomas A. Becker. The cornerstone was laid on May 24, 1903, by Bishop Monaghan, assisted by Vicar-General John A. Lyons and a large group of priests. The ceremonies began with a processional from the home of the Little Sisters of the Poor to a large wooden cross on the Church site where it was determined that the altar would be erected. After blessing this particular spot, the Bishop then consecrated and laid the cornerstone. Following this he blessed the foundation and then bestowed the Papal Blessing on all those present at the ceremony. The sermon was delivered by the Reverend Francis T. McCarthy, TOP – Original Church and School, now the old gym. S.J., while the musical program was under the direction of Professor BOTTOM – The brand new rectory in 1911. James Curran. On June 30, 1903, the Reverend John J. Connelly, then Chancellor of the Diocese and Assistant Pastor of Saint Paul's Church, was appointed as first Pastor of Saint Thomas.

    THE NEW MONASTICON HIBERNICUM AND INQUIRY INTO THE EARLY CHRISTIAN AND MEDIEVAL CHURCH IN IRELAND Launched in October 2003 under the auspices of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the ‘Monasticon Hibernicum’ project is based in the Department of Old and Middle Irish at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Co. Kildare. Central to the project is a database of the native Early Christian and Medieval (5th to 12th centuries AD) ecclesiastical foundations of Ireland - managed by research fellows Ailbhe MacShamhráin and Aidan Breen, under the general direction of Kim McCone, professor of Old and Middle Irish. A longer-term goal is to produce a dictionary of the Early Christian churches, cathedrals, monasteries, convents and hermitages of Ireland for which historical, archaeological or placename evidence survives. The title of the project pays tribute to Mervyn Archdall’s Monasticon Hibernicum; but what is envisaged here goes beyond revision of such antiquarian classics.1 The comprehensive character of this new Monasticon (the database already features a number of sites which are indicated solely by historical, or by archaeological, or placename evidence), along with its structure and referencing, will make for more than a general reference book. It is envisaged as a research-tool to further inquiry in the fields of history (helping to illuminate, for example, ecclesiastico-political relationships, pre-reform church organisation, the dissemination of saints’ cults and gender-politics in the Irish church) and settlement studies - as illustrated below with reference to some of the Leinster data. The first phase of the project, carried out during the academic year 2003-04, has focused on the ecclesiastical province of Dublin – which includes the dioceses of Dublin itself, Glendalough, Ferns, Kildare, Leighlin and Ossory.

This study presents a methodological framework for understanding early modern patronage in which the arts are necessarily viewed as interconnected, and patronage is understood as a complex and often contradictory process that involved all elements of society. First, this study examines the legacy of arts patronage that Albrecht V inherited from his Wittelsbach predecessors and developed during his reign, from 1550-1579. A faithful church is marked by the faithful carrying out of the mission given to the church by Jesus Christ, but that mission can be identified only by faithful theology. So, in the new monasticism we must strive simultaneously for a recovery of right belief and right practice.” (Jonathan R.     AAR October 2, 2008 Christian Spirituality Group “The New Monasticism” Evan Howard, presiding Introducing New Monasticism Welcome to the Christian Spirituality Group of the American Academy of Religion. This afternoon our topic of discussion is “the new monasticism.” We have a delightful set of contributions to our discussion provided by our three presenters, Brian Campbell, Philip Harrold, and Martha McAfee. My name is Evan Howard, and I will, by way of introduction, provide an overview of new monastic phenomena. So, just what is “new monasticism”? The answer to that question depends on where you draw your circle. The fact of the matter is intentional communities and ascetical or alternative expressions are forming all the time. There is the global spread of the French-born Community of the Beatitudes. There are the groups connected with the Northumbria Community in the UK--who commit to a set of common values and practices and who maintain mutual accountability and encouragement largely through email contact. We could discuss the shifts in the character of quasi-Anarchist collectives in the West. And so on. As with the history of religious life more generally, the forms of new experiments in Christian living vary greatly. There are “new friars,” small teams of missionaries sharing Christ in deed and word among the poor of the world. There are “new siblings of the common life,” drawing from the heritage of monasticism to form communities of solidarity and influence. There are “new solitaries,” experimenting with the life and ministry of the hermit. Once again, many expressions could be explored. In light of the summary presented in your program book, I will focus my attention on those groups recently comprehended under the labels “new monasticism,” and “new friars.” The historical development of new monasticism can be divided into three seasons.

Howard Department of Ministry, Fuller Theological Seminary 62421 Rabbit Trail, Montrose, CO 81403, USA; [email protected] Received: 1 June 2019; Accepted: 3 August 2019; Published: 21 August 2019 Abstract: Since Herbert Grundmann’s 1935 Religious Movements in the Middle Ages, interest in the Beguines has grown significantly. Yet we have struggled whether to call Beguines “religious” or not. My conviction is that the Beguines are one manifestation of an impulse found throughout Christian history to live a form of life that resembles Christian monasticism without founding institutions of religious life. It is this range of less institutional yet seriously committed forms of life that I am here calling the “Beguine Option.” In my essay, I will sketch this “Beguine Option” in its varied expressions through Christian history. Having presented something of the persistent past of the Beguine Option, I will then present an introduction to forms of life exhibited in many of the expressions of what some have called “new monasticism” today, highlighting the similarities between movements in the past and new monastic movements in the present. Finally, I will suggest that the Christian Church would do well to foster the development of such communities in the future as I believe these forms of life hold much promise for manifesting and advancing the kingdom of God in our midst in a postmodern world.
