Hink: Exploring the Auteur Elia Kazan Exploring the Auteur Elia Kazan by Savannah Hink (Motion Picture Television 1113) Who is Elia Kazan? lia Kazan was a prominent film director active between the 1940's through the 1970’s. Along with directing, Elia Kazan was an actor, a playwright, Broadway director, and writer. Kazan Ewas born to Greek parents living in Turkey on September 7, 1909. His family immigrated to New York City when he was just four years old. To the dismay of his father, who wanted him to work in the family rug trade business, Kazan majored in English literature at Williams College, where he discovered an interest in theatre. He proceeded onto the Yale School of Drama, before leaving graduate school to join The Group Theatre. When the Group Theatre disbanded in 1941, Kazan shifted his career from acting to directing. As a director, Kazan emerged as the leading exponent of psychological realism via his film and stage productions throughout the forties and fifties.

Cobb Johnny Friendly Martin Balsam Gillette Rod Steiger Charley Malloy Fred Gwynne Slim Pat Henning K. O. Dugan Pat Hingle Bartender Leif Erickson Glover Nehemiah Persoff Cab Driver James W esterfield Big Mac Johnny Seven Longshoreman On the Waterfront was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won 8 of them: Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando), Best Supporting Actress (Saint), Best Director (Kazan), Best Story & Screenplay (Schulberg), Best Editing (Gene Milford), Best Cinematography—Black & White (Boris Kaufmann), and Best Art Direction—Black & White (Richard Day). It very well might have won a ninth for Best Actor had not three of the persons in the category—Malden, Cobb, and Steiger—all been in the same film and therefore competing against one another (the award went to Edmond O’Brian for his performance in The Barefoot Contessa.). Leonard Bernstein received a nomination for Best Music; that award went to Dmitri Tiomkin for “The High and the Mighty.” Had ELIA KAZAN (Elia Kazanjoglous, 7 September 1909, Istanbul, Turkey) never come to Hollywood he would be known now as one of America’s great stage directors. As it is, he’s in the books as a great stage director, a great film director, and a great snitch: he volunteered to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1952 to inform on the political leanings of former friends.
