THE FILMS of ELIA KAZAN Coordinator: Howie Menikoff Elia THE FILMS OF ELIA KAZAN Coordinator: Howie Menikoff Elia Kazan was one of the most influential directors to work in both theatre and film. His productions reshaped the values of the American Stage and brought a new sense of realism and intensity to film. He was famous for bringing politically liberal issues before the American public, but later vilified for naming names before the House Un-American Activities Committee. This study group will deal Kazan's films although many other aspects of his life and work will be discussed. Each week a different film will be examined. Hink: Exploring the Auteur Elia Kazan Exploring the Auteur Elia Kazan by Savannah Hink (Motion Picture Television 1113) Who is Elia Kazan? lia Kazan was a prominent film director active between the 1940's through the 1970’s. Along with directing, Elia Kazan was an actor, a playwright, Broadway director, and writer. Kazan Ewas born to Greek parents living in Turkey on September 7, 1909. His family immigrated to New York City when he was just four years old. To the dismay of his father, who wanted him to work in the family rug trade business, Kazan majored in English literature at Williams College, where he discovered an interest in theatre. He proceeded onto the Yale School of Drama, before leaving graduate school to join The Group Theatre. When the Group Theatre disbanded in 1941, Kazan shifted his career from acting to directing. As a director, Kazan emerged as the leading exponent of psychological realism via his film and stage productions throughout the forties and fifties.

It very well might have won a ninth for Best Actor had not three of the persons in the category—Malden, Cobb, and Steiger—all been in the same film and therefore competing against one another (the award went to Edmond O’Brian for his performance in The Barefoot Contessa.). Leonard Bernstein received a nomination for Best Music; that award went to Dmitri Tiomkin for “The High and the Mighty.” Had ELIA KAZAN (Elia Kazanjoglous, 7 September 1909, Istanbul, Turkey) never come to Hollywood he would be known now as one of America’s great stage directors. As it is, he’s in the books as a great stage director, a great film director, and a great snitch: he volunteered to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1952 to inform on the political leanings of former friends.

  • LTE About Elia Kazan FINAL
Contact: Donna Williams, WNET.ORG 212.560.8030, [email protected] American Masters A Letter to Elia About Elia Kazan On March 21, 1999, and for the first time in its long and illustrious history, the Academy Awards® ceremony occurred on a Sunday. Over 45 million people watched on television. While glamorous nominees and other Hollywood elites walked the fabled red carpet into L.A.’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, perhaps the most accomplished and influential attendee entered discreetly through a back door. Introduced by one of the greatest actors of our time, Robert De Niro, and one of the greatest directors of our time, Martin Scorsese, one of the greatest directors of all time prepared to return to the OSCAR® stage to receive the iconic gold statuette for the first time since 1954. After a video retrospective featuring the man and his work, Elia Kazan was escorted onto the stage by his wife, Frances, to receive an honorary OSCAR® recognizing and celebrating his lifetime of extraordinary achievement in film. Not everyone applauded. Even fewer rose to their feet. But the ovation lasted for nearly a full minute—an eternity in an OSCARS® television broadcast. Although his history was controversial and his relationship with Hollywood was at times ambivalent, no one could deny the genius of his visionary and influential body of work in film. Kazan graciously thanked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for its courage and generosity in bestowing such an honor. He embraced an emotional Scorsese and DeNiro, then humbly concluded, “I think I could just slip away.” Kazan the honoree was not always so reserved and retiring.

  • Warren Beatty at BFI Southbank in June 2012
PRESS RELEASE: May 2012 12/25 Warren Beatty at BFI Southbank in June 2012 Throughout June 2012, BFI Southbank dedicates a season to the acting and directing achievements of Warren Beatty, one of cinema’s most charismatic and legendary actors, and brother of Shirley MacLaine (who also enjoys a companion season of her film work throughout the month). Beatty is almost as famous for his love life as he was for his acting, producing and directing films, having been connected with an array of leading ladies over the years. Beatty’s first major film role was starring alongside Natalie Wood as Bud in the romantic drama Splendor in the Grass (Dir Elia Kazan 1961) based on an original screenplay by American playwright William Inge. Critics refused to take the handsome young Beatty seriously, and he strove for more serious roles which lead to performances in All Fall Down (Dir John Frankenheimer 1962), Robert Rossen’s masterpiece Lilith (1964) and a tour de force turn as a stand-up comic who flees Detroit for Chicago after incurring the wrath of the mob in Arthur Penn’s Mickey One (1964). It was the next film directed by Penn, the classic Bonnie and Clyde (1967), which elevated Beatty’s status in Hollywood. Beatty and co-star Faye Dunaway played the outlaws Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker in a landmark in new American cinema. Over the next ten years, Beatty starred in, produced and occasionally directed some of the most important films in Hollywood. The critically acclaimed McCabe & Mrs. Miller (Dir Robert Altman 1971) considered Beatty’s finest film; Shampoo (Dir Hal Ashby 1975) in which Beatty stars as a womanising hairdresser alongside Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn and a young Carrie Fisher; and the massive box office hit Heaven Can Wait (Dir Warren Beatty 1978) which was nominated for nine Oscars.

There is the main traditional model of stay at home mother with a father in the role of the breadwinner; the rise of rape culture; and the glass ceiling in the workplace.
