For generations animal husbandry and the farming of fruit, potatoes and hops have lent its lowland plain a rural charm and colour which vies for attention with the more dramatic uplands and gorges of the catchment periphery. Little wonder that much of the valley is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, or that its towns and villages swell with visitors during the spring and summer.

A drone is a piece of technology that flies in the air and you operate it from a remote controller. These days, as technology has progressed, it is unusual to find a drone without an inbuilt camera of some sort. Drones are getting cheaper and better, meaning they can almost fly themselves with intelligent flight functions such as ‘follow me’ and ‘return to home’ modes, making flying much easier. Drones have in the past been misused meaning regulations apply to owning one. You must have a licence to fly a drone and can only fly one under 250g in confined spaces which is what we had to do to take these pictures! Thanks to Julian and Challis Stokes for letting me take this photo from their garden to get this view of the church which has never been seen before.

  • Living History NEWSLETTER MAY 2017
Living History May 2017 Living History NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 Annual General Meeting and Open Afternoon October 2016 This event was very successful at raising the profile of the Living History Group with many non-members attending, lots of discussion, displays, several new members and lots of cake! Rhianon Turrell formally announced her intention to resign as chairman in January, but to continue in a research capacity. Message from Rhianon Turrell, Retiring Chair. By the time you read this we shall have had a special meeting at which Norman Taylor will have taken over as Chairman and hopefully we shall have a group of people prepared to take on some of the many activities with which Living History is involved, not least as secretary and putting on a display for the village fête. Brian Mitchell has taken over as Editor of the Newsletter, but will need more contributors if this is to continue. Audrey Bott is continuing as Treasurer, Ron Shaw will continue to contribute Military research and a small group will continue with Parish Record transcription. Rhianon Turrell will continue with News from the Archives for the Parishioner, family history help and general research as needed. Nancy Morgan has also offered to be part of this group. If you were not able to attend the meeting and are able to help in any way please contact Norman Taylor on 780243. Again thank you to everyone who has contributed, in so many different ways, to the Living History group over the years I have been Chairman and I am confident that the group will flourish with a new team in charge.

October 2020 In this issue: All the news that fits: Yarpole Parish News 4 Yarpole Community Shop 6 Parish Footpaths Officers 9 Parish Hall Update 15 Camilla and Dave 17 End of Harvest - Carol Clare Edible mushrooms foraged in Mortimer Forest. Barbara Flaherty Jeanette Kinsey. Brier Art Studio. See p.31 2 Dear Readers, It seems just like yesterday that I was reading Hetty’s upbeat editorial. As I write this editorial I am listening to our Prime Minister explain that the new Covid restrictions for England could last six months. My recollection is that it was only recently that people were being encouraged to return to their place of work. Now we are advised, if we can, to work from home. Pubs, bars, and restaurants must close at 10pm. The rule of 6 has been accorded the force of law. Indoor sports, such as 5-a-side football, have been banned. Wedding celebrations are to be limited to 15 guests. One consolation, if it can be categorised as such, is that funerals can go ahead with up to 30 mourners. As I sit finishing the October edition of The Parishioner my computer tells me the UK has recorded 4,926 new coranvirus cases, the highest daily figure since May. On the positive side Police Chiefs have rejected the PM’s offer of military support. We are living through a perilous period of history. We need to help each other and prepare for the times that lie ahead. This is a responsibility that extends beyond Yarpole. Large numbers of us have friends and family living not just in the UK but across the world.

Yarpole Community Hub Questionnaire March 2021 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS 1 Contents Demographics of the Yarpole Parish Background to the survey Analysis: About you Facility use The Community Shop The Gallery Café The Church The Parish Hall Volunteering Communication 2 Demographics of the Yarpole Parishes Yarpole Group of Parishes comprises of the two parishes of Croft with Yarpole and Lucton, and the hamlets of Bircher, Bicton and Cockgate. We are located mid-way between the market towns of Leominster and Ludlow (approximately 6 miles away). Hereford, the county town, lies some 18 miles to the south. The parish had a population of 787 in 2011. Our parish’s demographics reflect those of the wider County of Herefordshire – historically with an ageing population and lower average earnings than England and Wales as a whole. (In 2011, 33% of the population were aged 60 and over, compared to 18% nationally and at around £450 per week, average wages in the county are 13% lower than across the West Midlands and 18% lower than for England.) Our community falls within 5% of the most deprived areas of the UK in terms of isolation and geographical barriers to services (e.g. distance to schools, GPs, shops, etc.) and within the most deprived 7.5% in terms of living environment (e.g. condition of housing, availability of heating). As local services have decreased and amenities closed down around the country, it increasingly falls to rural communities to provide facilities, activities and services, which would not otherwise be available. We are proud that our community takes a proactive stance to improving our shared spaces.

There have been some minor changes to the allocation sites and settlement boundaries for Bircher and Yarpole. These changes were as a result of the representations to the draft consultation on the plan itself rather than the response to the HRA report consultation. However there were no changes to the overall vision and objectives of the existing planning policies. 2.0 Screening of draft NDP 2.1 Regulation 102 of the Habitats Regulations 2010 requires that a Screening Assessment be undertaken, in order to identify the ‘likely significant effects’ of an NDP.
