“Avanite are actively tackling the problem” – Gwyn Williams, ICT Background Gwynedd Council provides public services to the 122,000 residents of the old counties of Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire, along with full IT services for North & Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency (a part of the Welsh Government) and GwE (School Effectiveness and Improvement Service for North Wales). Gwynedd Council is by far the largest employer in North West Wales with nearly 4000 employees in key areas such as Education, Highways, Economic Development, Social Services and Welfare and Planning.In total the hospital employs 6300 people, making it one of the areas largest employers. The Problem The size of user profiles can be the bane of any Citrix administrator’s life and has an adverse effect on user experience, storage, and network requirements. We implemented AppSense (Ivanti) Environment Manager together with a mandatory Windows profile and were pleased to see the average size of 0.5MB per user within the AppSense database. We then implemented Internet Explorer 11 and rapidly saw the per user size grow to an average of 12MB per user. Do we assume 2MB of this is down to the new office and talk about 10MB per user? Not only was this having an adverse effect to our database size but users were reporting increased logon times with their systems. We found that removal of the web data by deleting the user’s Windows Settings Group for Internet Explorer restored their login times, however users then reported loss of their browsing history and cookies. We explored possible solutions with Microsoft and AppSense but neither had anything on their respective road- maps to address our issues.

The Lord Lieutenant is thus the chief executive authority in that county, through whom the policy decisions of the central government would be directed. Conversely he would represent the considerations of the county at Court and to the government. Because of these exalted duties the honour was usually given to the principal aristocratic landowner in the county. Deputy lieutenants would be appointed to carry out the directions given by him. The office also had the power to recommend, and so thus constitute, the Commission of the Peace, the body of justices of the peace or magistrates who supervised the legal and administrative systems of the county though the medium of their Quarter Sessions court. The Lord Lieutenant also had responsibility for local defence and accordingly controlled the county militia forces. This aspect of his work is dealt with in more detail in the second introduction. The collection catalogued below contains some of the working papers, mainly correspondence, of four successive Lord Lieutenants of Caernarvonshire and one future Lord Lieutenant as a Vice Lieutenant.

This collection consists of material received from a Wrexham solicitor, relating to his personal and business affairs, and to some of his clients. The bulk of S.P.Bevon's personal papers consist of correspondence about properties he owned in Wrexham, and reports and prospectuses of various mining and plantation concerns abroad, in which he owned shares. There is no autobiographical material. The rest of the collection has been sorted into sequence by parish, with separate sections for court cases and election papers, as there is no large quantity of material relating to an individual client. Perhaps the most interesting item is a photograph showing the range of products made by Ewloe Potteries, Buckley, in the 1920s. Other interesting subjects include Ffos-y-go Colliery, Gwersyllt, 1901-4; the appointment of a receiver for the New Llangollen Slate and Slab Company. 1898-1903; prospectus of Broughton Hall Iron Company, c.1890; complaints about conditions at Croesnewydd Military Hospital, Wrexham, 1917; and a dispute over building costs of a new church at Brynteg, 1894-5. There are also some files of papers relating to S.P.Bevon's clients, 1920-40, in the Wrexham Library collection.

Greaves. The family were well-known members of the Caernarfonshire gentry. John Whitehead Greaves, J.E. Greaves1 father was involved in the exploitation of slate mines and quarries around Ffestiniog through his company, J.W. Greaves and Son, Porthmadog, in which he was followed by his son. John Greaves was a considerable landowner in his own right, with a large estate at Glangwna as well as property at Bron Eifion, Criccieth. From 1910 he also had considerable investments in Canadian developments. Before succeeding to the Lieutenancy on the death of the previous incumbent, the first Lord Penrhyn, in 1886, John Greaves had served as High Sheriff in both Merioneth and Caernarfonshire, and as Deputy Lieutenant for Merioneth. As Lord-Lieutenant of Caernarfonshire it was his duty to act for the Crown in the County, corresponding frequently with Buckingham Palace and representing the Crown on ceremonial occasions. His position also called for him to chair the Advisory Committee, which was responsible for the nomination and recommendation of Justices of the Peace.

NORTH WEST WALES DENDROCHRONOLOGY PROJECT DATING OLD WELSH HOUSES - Caernarfonshire TŶ MAWR (formerly The Castle Inn) 2 and 4 Castle Street, Cricieth, Gwynedd (formerly Caernarfonshire) Parish: Cricieth Grid Reference: SH 5004 3785 © Crown copyright: Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales: Dating Old Welsh Houses: North West Wales Dendrochronology Project HOUSE DETAILS: Tŷ Mawr is a substantial house of Snowdonian type presenting several features of mid/later sixteenth century date including voussoir-headed openings, and two tiers of cusped windbraces. The timber is unusually well dressed with the removal of all sapwood. The principal chamber has a hooded fireplace and open archbraced truss. Published account in RCAHMW’s Inventory, Caernarvonshire, Volume II: Central (1960), pp. 62-3, no. 873, with an additional survey commissioned by the NWWDP available in NMRW (NPRN 32) (Richard Suggett, RCAHMW). Cantref: Dunoding Commote: Eifionydd (Atlas of Caernarvonshire pp 69-71). Dendrochronology results: Felling date range: After 1527. Lower purlin 1516; Beam (0/1). Site Master 1431-1516 gwyg2 (t = 7.1 SKERHS2; 6.1 CEFNCAR1; 6.0 CROWLE2) (Oxford Dendrochronology Laboratory [ODL]). The removal of the sapwood precludes the determination of an exact date: at least eleven rings are missing. SUMMARY: Tŷ Mawr may be of greatest significance as one of very few sites in Wales definitely associated with an early modern practitioner of medicine: it was also known as ‘Tu William feddig’, the house of William the Doctor. Little is known of this man, but it is likely that he practised in the late sixteenth-early seventeenth century. It is not known whether Tŷ Mawr was built for him, or occupied by him later.
