A. Introduction Openspaceprotectionisaneffectivetoolforpreservingcommunitycharacter,protectingtheenvironmentand enhancingqualityoflife.Consensusabouttheroleofopenspaceprotectionincommunityplanningiscritical. Having taken into consideration other community goals, an Open Space Plan is the basis for establishing prioritiesandpolicies. B. BackgroundandJustification The population of New Hampshire grew 6.5% from 2000 to 2010, with a population estimate of 1,316,470 accordingto2010censusfigures.HillsboroughCountyhadthegreatestpopulationincreaseoftheState’sten counties.Whiletherearesomepositiveaspectstogrowth,withitcomemanychallenges,nottheleastofwhich are stresses on the environment. One of the most serious concerns is the permanent loss of open spaces. Statewide,itisestimatedthat15,000acresofopenlandaredevelopedeveryyear. The 2002 Master Plan states that Sharon’s environment is fragile with a limited capacity to support further development.TheMasterPlanalsonotesthatin2002,“muchofthemostsuitablelandfordevelopmenthas beenutilized.Increasingly,buildinglotswillbeproposedonmarginalland;landwithsteepslopes,wetlands,or withotherlimitations.Unlessprecautionsaretaken,futuredevelopmentcouldalsodiminishordestroysomeof theTown’sremaininghistoriclandmarks.” C. Purposes ThisOpenSpacePlansupportsandfulfillsmanyofthegoalsandrecommendationsofthe2002SharonMaster Plan.Principallytheseincludeseveralappearingunderthesection“GoalsandRecommendations”onpage18of theMasterPlan. Goals: 1. “Topreservetheessentiallyruralcharacterinagrowingandurbanizingworld.” 2. “Toprotectstreams,riversandwetlands.” 7. “Torecognizeandprotectenvironmentallysensitivelandsandsurfacewaters.” 8. “ToestablishandmaintainanopenspacesystemcomprisedoftheTown’senvironmentallysensitive areas,whicharelinkedbytrailsandcorridorstoprovidewildlifeandpedestrianpassagethroughout thetown.” 9. “Topreservelargetractsofopenwoodland.” 10 ”Toprotectourforestedhillsides.” 11 “TopreservetheruralcharacterofallroadsinSharon.” Recommendations: “CompletetheprotectionoftheslopesofTempleMountain.” “Expand the Town Forest, linking it with our two other major open space areas to the east and southwest.” “ProtecttheentirelengthoftheGridleyRiveranditswatershedfromsedimentation,erosion,pollution orinappropriatedevelopment.” “Take steps to assure that our children, new Town residents and the residents of an increasingly urbanizingstateunderstandtheimportanceofkeepingSharonrural.”

“Developaconservationplan.” “Developahillsidedevelopmentordinance.” “MakeeveryefforttopreservetheGridleyaquifer.” “Makeeveryefforttopurchaseorprotectenvironmentallysensitivegravelbearinglands” ThisPlansetsforthcriteria,goalsandrecommendationsforimplementinganOpenSpaceProtectionPlanand establishes a role for Town government in land conservation as a matter of public policy. That public policy acknowledgesthatbyprotectingcertainnaturalfeaturesdescribedhereunder“OpenSpacePlanGoals,”Town government is protecting or enhancing certain resource values. At a minimum, the Plan directs the Town of Sharontopromotelandconservationandtobevigilantinseekingopportunitiestoprotectland.Theroleof Towngovernmentinthisareamayalsobetoeducatelandownersaboutthetopic,networkamonglandowners andlandtrustsandacquirelandorconservationeasements. D. PlanningApproach Inthespringof2010,theTownofSharonbeganaprocesstodevelopatownopenspaceconservationplan.An adhocSharonOpenSpaceCommitteewasformedasasubRcommitteeoftheSharonConservationCommission. ItjoinedtheMonadnockConservancy’sMonadnockCommunityConservationPartnershipprogram.TheSharon OpenSpaceCommitteeincludedmembersoftheConservationCommission,PlanningBoard,SelectBoard,and citizensatlarge. TheCommitteeconductedaConservationSurveytocollectinputfromresidentsastowhattheyvaluemost aboutthetownandwhatresourcestheyfeelcontributemosttothetown’squalityoflife.Residentswereasked toindicateonatownmapwherespecialplacesarelocatedandwhatmakestheseplacesunique.Residentswho attended the 2010 Sharon Town Picnic were asked to complete the survey and during the fall of 2010, the surveywasmailedtoall118householdsintown.Atotalof57surveyswerereturned.Inaddition,volunteers fromtheplanningcommitteeinterceptedcitizenscomingtothetownofficesduringofficehoursonTuesdays evenings and invited them to identify special places in town by placing sticky dots on a map. Between the surveysandtheeveningsatthetownoffice,298dotswereplacedonthetownmap. The planning committee also reviewed natural resource information and maps provided by the Monadnock Conservancy.ThecommitteereachedconsensusonasetofOpenSpaceGoalsandNaturalFeaturesImportant toProtect.Inallcases,thegoalsandfeaturesweredeterminedtobeessentialtocommunitywellRbeinginsome basicway,orarepartofhowresidentsdefineSharon’scommunitycharacter.Ultimately,allarebasictothe environmentalqualityandruralcharacterofSharon. E. CommunityValues In summarizing the results of the Conservation Survey, it was found that survey respondents have the same primaryvalueasstatedinthe2002MasterPlan:“Ourprimarygoal,andourresponsibility,istoforgeablueprint thatwillensurethattwentyyearsfromnow,Sharonremainsasmall,rural,beautifulcommunity.”Thesurvey resultsindicatedthatpeoplebelievethatalloftheresourcesaddressedinthesurveycontributetocommunity characterandqualityoflife,withcleanwater,cleanair,wildlifehabitat,andpeaceandquietconsideredtobe mostimportant.Thesurveyfurtherhighlightedthattheundeveloped,unspoiledlandscape,thepeaceandquiet and isolation, and the small scale of the town were the features that most contribute to the town’s unique qualities.Whenaskedtoidentifyplacesmostimportanttoconserve,landsalongtheGridleyRiver,theTown Forest and Meadow Brook, the mountain area along the eastern town boundary and the undeveloped road frontageswereareasmostfrequentlyidentified.

F. OpenSpacePlanGoals 1. ConserveandprotectrivercorridorsandwetlandsassociatedwiththeGridleyRiver,MeadowBrook,Town Line Brook, and their tributaries. This will buffer these high quality streams from the adverse effects of developmentandprovideimportantcorridorsforwildlife. 2. Conserve and protect the current and potential drinking water resources including the stratified drift aquifersandtheirrechargeareaslocatedthroughouttheTown. 3. Maintain the large blocks of undeveloped land by conserving lands adjacent to existing conserved lands, including: TheblockbetweenJarmanyHillRoadandNHRte.124; TheTownForestblocknorthofJarmanyHillRoad;and TheblockbetweenNHRte.123andTempleMountain. Eachoftheseblocksisasignificantcontributortothehealthofwildlifepopulationsandthewaterqualityin thethreestreams. 4. Conservelandthatcanprovideconnectorsandcorridorsbetweenthelargeblocksofundevelopedland,as wellassteepslopesandviewsheds. 5. Protectridgelines,viewshedsandsteepslopes.RegulatecutRandRfilltopreventlandslidesandtopreserve waterquality/safety. 6. Preserve the rural character of Sharon’s roads, particularly those with scenic and undeveloped road frontages. ThesegoalsreaffirmandexpandonthegoalsandrecommendationssetforthinSharon’s2002MasterPlan. TheGoalsalsoreflectthe“landswithimportantconservationvalues”thatwereidentifiedthroughthisplanning process and are displayed on the final map of the Natural and Community Resources Inventory, attached as AppendixAtothisplan. G. ImplementationStrategies WaterTesting:TheConservationCommissionwillcontinuethewatertestingithasconductedeachyearsince 2002. BuildCommunitySupport:TheConservationCommissionwillencouragethepeopleofSharontogetoutonto theland.TrailsintheTownForesthavebeenclearedandmarked,andadditionaltrailsarebeingdeveloped.A mapisbeingcreatedandwillbemadeavailabletothepublic,bothontheTownwebsiteandatthetrailheads. Community Awareness: The Open Space Committee shared survey results at the 2011 Town Picnic and on a posterboardintheTownHouse.TheCommitteewillsharetheNaturalResourceInventoryandOpenSpacePlan witheveryoneinthecommunityandwillinvitecitizencommentandinput. LandownerOutreach:Whenappropriate,talkwithlandownersaboutthespecialcharacteristicsoftheirland; share natural resource information; share information about conservation options; provide access to best managementpracticesformanagingtheirland. H. OverviewofLandConservation There are two primary ways to protect land for conservation purposes: Conservation Land Transactions and Regulation. This plan focuses primarily on the former, which involves working directly with interested landowners.ThetwomostcommonConservationLandTransactionsareacquisitionoftheland,whichcanbe
Page3 APlanfortheProtectionofSharon’sOpenSpace done through a landowner donation or by purchasing the land, and acquisition of a conservation easement, whichalsocanbedonethroughalandownerdonationoftheeasementorbypurchasingtheeasement. ConservationLandTransactionscanbeinitiatedintwoways: Activeandstrategic:IdentifyinghighRpriorityparcelsandactivelyencouragingthelandownertoconserve theirland.Whensuccessful,theseprojectshavethegreatestpotentialtoachievecommunitygoals. Responsive to opportunities as they arise: Most land protection accomplishments come as the result of beingvigilantandreadytorespondwhenalandownerdecidestoconserveorselltheirland.Havingthe OpenSpacePlaninplacewillhelpguidetowndecisionstosupportaprojectwhentheseopportunitiesarise. Itwillalsohelpcreateopportunitiesthrougheducationandoutreach. I. Recommendations 1. ThePlanningBoardadoptstheOpenSpacePlanasachapterintheTownMasterPlan. 2. Incarryingouttheirresponsibilities,theBoardofSelectmen,PlanningBoard,ConservationCommission, and Zoning Board of Adjustment look for active ways to integrate the Open Space Plan into their deliberations and plans. These might include Master Plan updates, zoning changes, subdivision regulations,subdivisionreviews,siteplanreviews,placementandextensionofinfrastructure,economic development,emergencymanagement,andfacilitysiting. 3. TheConservationCommissioncontinuestofulfillthefunctionsofanOpenSpaceCommitteeandwill appoint an Open Space subRcommittee as needed if the Conservation Commission’s workRload increases. 4. TownBoardsshouldcontinuecommunityconversationstoenhancesupportforconservationfunding. Use these funds to pay for conservation transaction costs when a landowner agrees to donate a conservationeasement. J. ActionPlan Within6months Adopt a Land Conservation rating system to establish relative priorities and evaluate specific land conservationopportunities. PublicizetheOpenSpacePlantothegeneralpublicandinterestedgroups. MeetwiththePlanningBoardtoreviewtheOpenSpacePlanandactions. Annually ConsiderwhatactionsareneededattheTownMeetingtoimplementtheOpenSpacePlan.Thesecould includeexpandingtheConservationFundforacquiringspecificparcels. Holdalandownereducationworkshoponconservationoptions. TheConservationCommissionandtheOpenSpaceCommitteeshouldmeetwiththePlanningBoardand Selectboardtoreviewprogresstowardimplementation. Biannually ReviewtheOpenSpacePlanandrevise,ifnecessary.

Acquire updated maps from Southwest Region Planning Commission or the Monadnock Conservancy showingconservationlands,naturalresources,andotherrelatedfeatures. K. Conclusion The Sharon Master Plan of 2002 clearly states the community’s goal of maintaining Sharon’s unique rural character.Itdeclaresthatwemustnotonlyworktoprotectourtown’scharacter,butwemustdoabetterjob oflettingothersknowwhyourtownissospecial,andwhykeepingSharonruralisnotonlyinourbestinterest, butisalsonecessaryforthewelfareoftheentireregion.TheOpenSpacePlanprovidesguidanceregardingthe importantplaceswithinSharonthatshouldbeprotectedinordertoachievethisgoal.

APPENDIXA–NaturalandCommunityResourcesInventory A. Introduction ThepurposeofthisNaturalResourceInventory(NRI)istocompile,mapanddescribeimportant,naturally occurringresourcesinthetownofSharon.NRI’saretypicallyusedforamyriadofpurposesincluding:natural resourceplanningandmanagement,conservationplanning,landuseplanning,evaluatingeffectsoflanduse changesovertime,andeducatingthepublicaboutwhatresourcesexistinadefinedarea(atown,awatershed, aregion),whereintheareatheyarelocated,andtheroletheyplayinmaintainingecologicalandcommunity health.Naturalresourceinventoriescanbeusedtoraisepublicawarenessandunderstandingofhowvarious landusepracticescaneitherharmorpreventharmtotheresources’functionsandvalues. InadditiontomappingSharon’snaturalresources,theinventoryapproachinvitedtownresidentstocontribute localknowledgeaboutthevariousresourcestoenhancethequalityandusefulnessofthecompiledinformation. Residentsalsoprovidedinputregardingplaceswithcultural,historical,recreational,andscenicsignificancein town.Thislocalknowledgeinformedthesummarymappingofimportantconservationvaluesthatformsthe basisforestablishingconservationpriorities. B. Jurisdiction NewHampshirelawgrantstomunicipalitiestheauthorityandresponsibilitythroughtheirconservation commissionstocataloguetheirlocalnaturalresourcesandtotakeactionstowardtheirprotection,asfollows: NHRSA36A:2(ConservationCommissions) “Suchcommissionshallconductresearchesintoitslocallandandwaterareasandshallseektocoordinate theactivitiesofunofficialbodiesorganizedforsimilarpurposes,andmayadvertise,prepare,printand distributebooks,maps,charts,plansandpamphlets,whichinitsjudgmentitdeemsnecessaryforitswork. Itshallkeepanindexofallopenspaceandnatural,aestheticorecologicalareaswithinthecityortown,as thecasemaybe,withtheplanofobtaininginformationpertinenttoproperutilizationofsuchareas, includinglandsownedbythestateorlandsownedbyatownorcity.Itshallkeepanindexofall marshlands,swampsandallotherwetlandsinalikemanner,andmayrecommendtothecitycouncilor selectmenortothedepartmentofresourcesandeconomicdevelopmentaprogramfortheprotection, developmentorbetterutilizationofallsuchareas.” C. WatershedContextMap Mostnaturalresourcesoccuronthelandscapeinamannerthathaslittleornorelationshiptopoliticallycreated boundaries(parcel,town,countyandstateboundaries),exceptinthoseinstanceswheretheboundaryfollowsa naturalfeaturesuchasthecenterlineofariver,theedgeofalake,oralongthehighpointofaridgeline.Water flows,plantcommunities,animalpopulations,andmorebroadlyecologicalfunctioning,typicallyoccuracross humandefinedboundaries,andmaybedisruptedwhenlandusedecisionsaremadeonlyinthecontextof politicalboundaries,(i.e.attheparcelscalebyanindividuallandowneroratthetownscalethroughthe implementationofmunicipalzoning). Delineationofthelandscapebasedonphysicaland/orbiologicalcharacteristicshasmoresignificantmeaning andutility,particularlywhenseekingtoavoidimpactsoflandusedecisionsonsurfacewaterquality.Acommon formoflanddelineationforlanduseplannersisthewatershed,inpartbecauseoftheimportantroleand impactthatwaterflowhasonecologicalhealthandfunctioning.Watershedsaredefinedbythetopographic dividinglines(thehighpoints)betweendrainageareas.Rainfallingononesideortheotherofthesedividing lineswillflowintodifferentstreams.Insomeinstancesthesestreamswilljointogetherfurtherdowninthe drainagebasintoformalargestreamorriver.Inothercases,thewaterwillflowinacompletelydifferent directionandremainseparateuntilitultimatelyreachestheocean. Watershedboundariescanbedefinedatvariouslevelsofscale,whereawatershedforasmallintermittent stream(asknownasacatchment),isalsoapartofthesubRwatershedofthestreamitflowsinto,whichinturn ispartofthelargerwatershedoftheriveritflowsinto(sometimesreferredtoasadrainagebasin).Assuch, somehighlevel(basinscale)watershedboundariesactasrealbiologicalboundariesfortheorganismsand naturalsystemsthatoccurwithinthem.Inotherinstances,smallersubRwatershedboundariesserveasa mechanismforconcentratingmigratingwildlifealongpreferredroutesorcorridors. ForthepurposeofprovidingcontextfortheSharonNaturalResourceInventory,twowatershedlevelsofscale areprovided.Thefirstlevel,showninMap1:“WatershedContext”,providesacontextfortheentiretownof Sharon,whichissituatedinthe“upper”(southeast)headwatersofthe489thousandacreContoocookRiver watershed.TheEasternBoundaryofSharonistheridgelineofTempleMountain,whichservesasthedividing linebetweentheContoocookRiverwatershedandtheSouheganwatershed,bothofwhichareultimatelypart ofthegreater2.65millionacreMerrimackRiverdrainagebasin.Assuch,allwaterpassingthroughanddraining fromSharon’sentirelandareaflowstotheContoocookRiver.Thismeansthatlanduseswithinthetown’s boundariescansignificantlyinfluencethequalityofsurfacewaterleavingthetown.

2. WaterResourcesMaps a. SubRWatershedsandSurfaceWatersofSharonMap ThelandareawithinSharon’sboundariesisdividedintofoursubRwatersheds.Fromnortheasttosouthwest, thesesubRwatershedsincludetheTownLineBrookwatershed,theMeadowBrookwatershed,theGridleyRiver watershed,andaportionofthewatershedforasmallstreamleadingfromHubbardPondtoContoocookLake. Surfacewaterresourcesaredefinedaslakesandponds,riversandstreams,wetlandsandvernalpools,andthe riparianzonesthatplayacrucialroleinmaintainingthehealthoftheseecologicalsystems. TownLineBrookRTownLineBrookoriginatesfromfourtributarystreamsalongthewesternflanksofTemple Mountain,with3040acresofthe4212acresubRwatershedlocatedinSharonandthebalancelocatedin southeasternPeterborough.TwotributariesoriginatinginthenortheastcornerofSharonarejoinedbytwo smallertributariesoriginatinginsoutheastPeterboroughtoformthemainstem.Atthepointofconfluence,the mainstemofTownLineBrookdipsnorthwardintoPeterboroughflowingapproximately.6milesbefore droppingbackdownintoSharonforapproximately1.4milestothepointatwhichitmergeswithMeadow Brook.Atthatpoint,thestreamturnsnorthwestforapproximately.6miles,crossingbackintoPeterborough andjoiningtheContoocookRiver. TheSharontributariesofTownLineBrookarecharacterizedbyseveralsmallponds,beaverimpoundments,and broad,openwetlandareas.ThenortherntributaryinSharonoriginatesfromSharon’slargestpond,afourRacre unnamedpondlocatedjustsouthofthePeterboroughboundaryandwestoftheclassVIportionofMountain Road.Theoutletfromthispondflowsintoa1.5acrebeaverpondapproximately.1milesdownstreamandthen continueswestwardapproximately1.3milestothepointwhereitjoinswiththePeterboroughtributariesand thenthesoutherntributary.ThesoutherntributaryinSharonhas6pondsorpoolsranginginsizefrom.2acres to3.2acres,thelargestofwhichislocatedatthetopoftributary.Mostoftheseappeartobebeaver impoundments.Totallengthofthistributaryisapproximately2.4miles.TheTownLineBrookisstockedwith easternbrooktroutbytheNHFishandGameDepartment. TheTownLineBrookwatershedhoststhreesmallpondsnotdirectlyassociatedwithanyoftheTownLineBrook tributaries.A.2acremanRmadepondislocatedneararesidentialstructureattheendoftheClassVportionof MountainRoad,a.7acremanRmadepondislocatedneararesidentialstructurewestofNHRoute123notfar fromthePeterboroughtownboundary,andathird1.2acrebeaverpondisperchedhalfwayupthewestern sideofTempleMountain. MeadowBrookRThe2726acreMeadowBrookwatershedisentirelycontainedwithinSharon’stown boundaries,originatingfromalargewetlandarealocatedsouthofJarmanyHillRoadandWestofNHRoute123. AftercrossingJarmanyHillRoad,thebrookflowsnortheastforapproximately1.1milesfromitsorigin,under JarmanyHillRoad,andthenturnswestandnorthwestasitentersSharon’stownforest.Thebrookmeanders approximately2.2milesthroughtheTownForestbeforeexitingtothenorth.Afterpassingthrough.2milesof privateland,thebrookentersa.9milestretchofprivatelyconservedlandtothepointwhereitmergeswiththe TownLineBrook.TheentirelengthoftheMeadowBrookischaracterizedbyoccasionalsmallpoolsandbeaver impoundments,includinga1.5acrepondbeforeitentersthetownforestand1.3acrepondbeforeitleavesthe TownForest.Asmall.3milesidestreamoriginatesfromwetlandsatthewestendoftheTownForestand travelsnorthwestbeforejoiningMeadowBrookfromthesouth,intheprivateconservationland.TheMeadow BrookisaStatedesignatednativewildbrooktroutstream. TheGridleyRiverRThelargestsubRwatershedinSharonencompassestheGridleyRiver.TheGridleyRiverforms fromthreetributaries,thenorthtributaryoriginatinginthesoutheastcornerofSharon,eastofNHRoute123, andthemiddleandsouthtributariesoriginatinginNewIpswich.Thenorthtributarymeandersina southwesterlydirectionforapproximately1.7milesbeforecrossingintoNewIpswichwhereitjoinstheother twotributariestoformtheGridleyRivermainstem.Thenorthtributaryandthemainstemflowfor

approximately1.5milesthroughNewIpswichbeforeturningnorthwestandreenteringSharon.TheGridley RiverflowsnorththroughthewestsideofSharonforapproximately5.5milesbeforepassingintoPeterborough andthenanother250feetwhereitjoinstheContoocookRiver.Approximately2.3milesoftheriverpass throughoralonglandsownedorconservedbytheSocietyfortheProtectionofNHForestsandanadditional.7 milesthroughoralonglandownedbytheNatureConservancy.ThetotalareaofthesubRwatershedis approximately7034acresandtheportionofthewatershedwithinSharonis3658acres.Severallocationsalong theGridleyRiverarestockedwitheasternbrooktroutbytheNHFishandGameDepartment. TheGridleyRiverhasseveralsmallin–streampondsorimpoundments,thelargestofwhich(approximately3.7 acres)wasthemillpondforaformermilllocatedeastofSwampRoad.Thewatershedalsoincludesseveral smallwoodlandandfarmponds(under.5acres)notdirectlyassociatedwiththeGridleyRiver.Amongtheseare theSharonBogpond(.4acres),andapondwestoftheriverinthenorthwestcornerofthetown,located partiallyonthetownboundary(.5acres). ContoocookLakeTributaryRAsmallportionofthewatershedforatributarytoContoocookLake,located upstreamfromtheotherSharonsubRwatersheds,encompasses477acresofthesouthwestcornerofSharon. ThetributaryflowsfromHubbardPondinRindge,throughapproximately.6milesofSharon,andintoJaffrey beforeenteringContoocookLake1.7milesdownstream.A2.6acreunnamedpondstraddlingtheSharonRJaffrey Boundaryisalsolocatedwithinthetributarywatershed,withtheoutflowofthepondlocatedinJaffreyand flowingsouthwestbeforejoiningthetributary.5milesupstreamfromContoocookLake.

WetlandsinSharon Wetlandsareplacesonthelandscapethatareperiodicallyorseasonallyfloodedorinundatedbywaterandthat havevegetationpresentthatisadaptedtogrowinthistypeofwetcondition.Oftentheseplacesareassociated withstreams,pondedges,orbeaveractivity,ortheymaybeisolatedfromstreamsorponds,locatedinareas wheresoilshavecharacteristicsthatdonotallowpooledstormwatertoreadilydrain.Wetlandsprovide importantwildlifehabitatandarealsoimportantforfilteringpollutantsandsedimentsasstormwaterrunsoff, thusmaintainingwaterqualityofriversandstreams.WetlandsinSharonhavenotbeencomprehensively mappedorfieldverified.ThisNRIusestwosourcesofinformationtopredictwherewetlandsarelocatedin town,theNationalWetlandsInventory(NWI)andtheHillsboroughCountySoilSurvey.TheNWIwascreatedby theUnitedStatesGeologicalSurvey,whichmappedallwetlandsthatwereevidentfromaerialphotography.This digitaldatabase,lastrevisedin2001,capturesmanyofthelargerandvisiblewetlands,butmissesmanyofthe smaller,forestedwetlands.Topredictadditionalwetlandsoccurrences,thisNRIprovidesthelocationofsoils classifiedaspoorlydrainedandverypoorlydrained(hydricsoils)bytheHillsboroughCountySoilSurvey.The combinationofthesetwodatasourcesprovideareasonablepredictorofwetlands.Manyofthewetlands identifiedthroughthewetlandmappinginSharonappeartobeassociatedwithoneofthestreamnetworksin town.TherealsoseveralisolatedwetlandsineachsubRwatershedthatdonotappeartobedirectlyconnected onthelandsurfacetothetown’smajorstreams. ValueofStreams,Rivers,Ponds,andWetlands Streams,rivers,ponds,andwetlandsprovidewildlifehabitatintheformofdirectsupportforaquaticand terrestrialspeciesandalsoascorridorsoftraveltoawidevarietyofterrestrialspecies.Theyalsoprovide recreationalopportunitiesforfishing,swimmingandboating,andinsometowns,provideasourceofdrinking waterforresidents.Waterqualityofsurfacewaterislargelydependentonthelandusesandtheconditionof thesurroundingland,aswellastheconditionofgroundandsurfacewaterinputs.Assuch,itisimportantthat uplandsadjacenttostreams,rivers,ponds,andwetlandsbepreservedintheirnaturalstatetothegreatest extentpossible.Forestry,agricultural,commercialandresidentialactivities,whennotmanagedappropriately, allhavethepotentialtodegradewaterquality. Thelandareasimmediatelyadjacenttosurfacewaters,calledriparianzones,provideatransitionfromsurface waterstouplandareas.Wheretheyareundisturbed,thesezonesareimportantforthewaterqualityservices theyprovide.Undisturbedriparianzonescanfiltersediment,nutrients,andpollutantsfromstormwaterrunoff beforeitenterssurfacewaters.Thesezones,andinparticularthewetlandsassociatedwithstreamsandponds, oftenprovidefloodwaterstorageduringperiodsofheavyprecipitation,groundwaterrechargefromthestored floodwater,andgradualreleaseofstoredwaterovertimetosurfacewaterbodies,helpingtomaintainwater flowsduringtimesofdrought. Undisturbedriparianzonesprovidemanybenefitstowildlife,includingtravelcorridors,coverfrompredators, nestingareas,andfoodsourcesformanyspecies.Shadeprovidedbyvegetationwithinthezone,particularly alongtheedgesofstreamsandpondsiscriticalformaintainingcoolwatertemperaturesnecessaryforthe healthoftheaquaticenvironmentandformanysensitiveaquaticspecies.Fallenwoodydebriswithinthezone providesimportanthabitatbothalongandintosurfacewaterbodies. Assuch,thesezonestendtobehotspotsforwildlife.TheyarepreferredhabitatinNewHampshireforthe followingspecies,amongmanyothers:NortherntwoRlinedsalamander,Fowlerstoad,Blanding’sturtle,ribbon snake,woodduck,redRshoulderedhawk,Easternscreechowl,barredowl,redRbelliedwoodpecker,pileated woodpecker,veery,ceruleanwarbler,riverotter,mink,andallspeciesofbatinNewHampshire.Theecological systemsthatareincorporatedwithinriparianzonesmakethemworthyofconsiderationforconservation.

SurfaceWaterQualityThreatsandSurfaceWaterBuffersMap Manytypesoflanduses,whenappliedtoareaswithcertainsoilcharacteristicsandorwithsteepslopes, dramaticallyincreasetheriskofwatercontaminationfrompollution,soilerosion,andtransportofsediment intosurfacewaterbodiesandtogroundwater,particularlywherethelanduseremovesvegetationordisturbs thelandsurfaceontheslopes. Contaminationoccursfrom“point”and“nonRpoint”pollutionsources.Pointsourcereferstoreleasesof pollutantsintotheenvironmentatspecific,identifiablelocations,suchasleakingundergroundfuelstorage tanks,industrialpipedischarges,accidentalspills,andidentifiablesepticsystemfailures.NonRpointsource pollutionoccursmorebroadlyacrossthelandscapeandcannotbeidentifiedtoaspecificsitewithcertainty. ExamplesofnonRpointpollutionsourcesincluderunofffromparkinglotsandroadsand,insomecases,farm animalwastefrompasturestormRwaterrunoff,animalsenteringstreams,ormanurespreadinginfields. OccurrencesofpollutionsourcesshownonthemapwereobtainedfromaNHDESdatabase.Thetwo occurrencesinSharonincludenonRpointsourcepollutionalongthewesterntownboundaryandaoneRtime pointsourcereleaseeastofNHRoute123,southofthetownoffices.TheNHDESdatabaseindicatedthatthis releasehasbeenremediated. Inconsideringsoilerodibility,soilsvaryintheirsusceptibilitytoerosion.Boththeextenttowhichsoilparticles bondtooneanother(resistingdetachment)andthewayinwhichsoiltextureaffectstheamountandrateof runoff,influencetheirsusceptibilitytoerosion.Finetexturedsoilshighinclayhavelowersusceptibility becausetheyareresistanttodetachment.Coarsetexturesoils,suchassandysoils,tendtohavelower susceptibilitybecauseoflowrunoffcharacteristics,eventhoughthesesoilsareeasilydetached.Medium texturedsoils,suchassiltloamsoils,tendtobemoderatelyerodiblebecausetheyaremoderatelysusceptible todetachmentandtheyproducemoderaterunoff.Soilshavinghighsiltcontentarethemosterodibleofall soils.Theyareeasilydetachedandtheytendtocrustandproducelargeamountsandratesofrunoff.i Steepslopes,thosegreaterthan15%,canbeaconstrainttolanddevelopmentandsometownshaveadopted regulationsthatguidelanduseswithinslopesof15%to25%andprohibitcertainlanduseswithslopesover 25%.Asslopeincreases,runoffvolumeandvelocitytendstoincreaseleadingtoasignificantincreaseinthe potentialforerosionandsedimenttransporttooccur. Giventheimportanceoftheriparianzoneforbothwildlifebenefitsandwaterqualitymitigation,600foot widebufferstripshavebeenmappedalongbothsidesofperennialstreamsand100footwidebufferstrips havebeenmappedaroundwetlandsandponds.Bufferstripsofupto600feetwidealongstreamsare adequatetoaccommodatethecorridorneedsofmostwiderangingwildlifespeciesandthehabitatneedsfor terrestrialspeciesthataredependentonaquatichabitats. Dependingonsiteconditions,suchassurfacetexture,vegetationtype,soilcharacteristics,andslopeofthe bufferstrip,bufferwidthsof100feetormoremaybeneededtoadequatelyfilteroutsediments,nutrients, andpollutantsfromstormwaterrunRoffandavoidwaterqualitydegradation.Widerbufferstripsareoften necessarytoavoidthepotentialforwaterqualitydegradationinareasthatslopedowntothewater’sedge.

GroundWaterMap Aquifers Virtuallyallportionsofthelandscapearecapableoftransmittingandstoringsomevolumeofwater underground.Groundwaterisimportantasitbothservesasasourceofdrinkingwaterforhumanneedsandit helpsmaintainthebaseflowsinmanyriversandstreamsallowingthemtorunevenintimesofdrought.Those undergroundareasthatarecapableoftransmittingandstoringhighvolumesofgroundwaterarecalled aquifers.Onetypeofaquifer,thestratifieddriftaquifer,hasbeenmappedbythestatebecauseoftheir exceptionalpotentialasundergroundrepositoriesofwater. StratifieddriftaquifersarecomposedofdepositsofcoarseRgrainedsandsandgravelsundergroundthathavea highercapacityforstoringandtransmittingwaterundergroundthanareaswithfinergrainsiltandclay particles.Ifwateriswithdrawnfromastratifieddriftaquifer,otherwaterwithintheaquiferisabletoflowto thelocationofwithdrawaltoreplaceit.Thesecharacteristicsmakestratifieddriftaquifersparticularlysuitable foruseaspublicdrinkingwatersupplies. TheStateofNHhasrankedstratifieddriftaquifersbasedonthepredictedvolumeofwaterthatagivenaquifer areawillallowtobetransmittedthroughitselfperday,expressedincubicfeetofwater.Thispredictedflow rate,knownastransmissivity,providesanindicatorofthepotentialforanaquifertoreliablymeetdrinking watersupplyneeds. ThestratifieddriftaquifermapshowsaquifersinSharonthathavebeenmappedbytheState.Theaquifersare showninthreeshadesofpinktopurpleaccordingtotransmissivityranges.Thelightpinkareasrepresent aquiferswithpredictedtransmissivityratesbetween0and1000ft3perday,mediumpinkbetween1000and 4000ft3perdayandpurplemorethan4000ft3perday.ThemajorityofaquiferareasmappedinSharonare predictedtoyieldrelativelylowtransmissivityrates.TheseaquiferareasarelocatedundertheTownLine BrooktributarieseastofNHRoute123andundermostoftheGridleyRiverasitpassesthroughSharon. TheaquiferwiththegreatestpotentialforuseasafuturemunicipalwatersupplyislocatedalongtheGridley River,underthenorthernhalfofSwampRoad.Thecenterportionofthisportionoftheaquifer,justwestof theGridleyRiver,ispredictedtohaveatransmissivityrateof2000to4000ft3perday.Otherareaswith moderatelyfavorabletransmissivityratesincludetheouteredgeofalargeraquiferlocatedinNewIpswichthat justcrossesSharon’ssouthernboundaryandasmallportionofanaquiferprimarilylocatedinJaffreythat crossesoverSharon’snorthwestboundary. Foranaquifertobeutilizedasadrinkingwatersupply,thequalityofthegroundwatermustbesufficientlyfree ofpollutantsandcontaminantstobesuitableforconsumption.Assuch,manycommunitiesidentifylandareas overaquifers,andareasthatpotentiallyproviderechargetotheaquifers,ashighpriorityforconservationto reducetheriskofcontaminationwhenprotected.SometownsinNHhavealsoenactedgroundwater protectionordinancestoprohibitcertainlandusesthatcouldleadtocontaminationwithintherechargeareas. Althoughrechargeofgroundwaterdoeshappenacrossthelandscape,soilscharacterizedbysandandgravel willdrainmorequicklyandmayprovideadirectconnectiontostratifieddriftaquifersfurtherunderground.As such,soilsclassifiedintheHillsboroughCountySoilSurveyashaving“probable”sandand/orgravel compositionareshownontheaquifermapaspotentialrechargeareas. ThemapalsoshowstwoPublicWaterSystemsidentifiedintheNHDepartmentofEnvironmentalServiceswater systemsdatabase.APublicWaterSystemisdefinedinNHstatuteas:"asystemfortheprovisiontothepublicof pipedwaterforhumanconsumption,ifsuchsystemhasatleast15serviceconnectionsorregularlyservesan averageofatleast25individualsdailyatleast60daysoutoftheyear.”Thisincludesallwellsthatsupportpublic buildingsandcommercialestablishmentsmeetingthethreshold,orlargerhousingcomplexesservedbya

commonwell.BothofthepublicwaterserviceslistedintheNHDESdatabaseforSharonservetheSharonArts Center.Bothofthesewellsaredrilledbedrockwells. PredictedHabitatLandCoverMap(includesNaturalHeritageBureaurarespeciesobservations) Habitatforwildlifeprovidesfood,shelter,waterandspaceforanimalspeciestosurviveandthrive.Every specieshasuniquehabitatrequirementsandpreferences.Virtuallyallportionsofthelandscapeprovidesome formofwildlifehabitatfromtimetotime,yetsomehabitatareasaredisproportionatelyimportanteithertoa particularspeciesortoadiversityofspecies.Unfortunately,manyoftheseimportanthabitattypesarerelatively uncommontobeginwith,andsomearedisappearingduetoconversionoralterationbyhumans. In2006NewHampshireFish&GameDepartmentpublishedtheNHWildlifeActonPlan(WAP)whichmaps predictedhabitatlandcovertypesandestablishesstatewideprioritiesforhabitatconservation.Recently updatedin2010,theWAPprovidesanimportanttoolforlandowners,towns,andconservationorganizationsto incorporateintotheirlanduseandconservationplanning.WhenusingthisdataindecisionRmakingatspecific sites,theWAPrecommendsverifyingthepredictedmapdataonthegroundthroughfieldbasedsurveys. TheWAPprojectworkedwithhabitatgroupingsatthreelevelsofscale:broadRscale(matrixforesttype groupings),patchscale(smallerpriorityhabitattypessuchasgrasslandsandpeatlands)andindividualsiteRscale (documentedoccurrencesofrareanduncommonspeciesandexemplarynaturalcommunities). PatchRScalePriorityWildlifeHabitatAreas TherecentWildlifeActionPlanusesmultiRvariablemodelingtopredictlocationswherepatchesofsignificant habitattypesarelikelytooccurinNewHampshire.Allofthemodeledpatchscalehabitattypesareconsidered tobeespeciallycriticalhabitatsforwildlifeandarerelativelyuncommoninthestate.AccordingtotheWAP findings,fivepatchscalepriorityhabitattypescanbefoundinSharon:Marshes(WetMeadow/ShrubWetland), Peatlands,Grasslands,RockyRidge–TalusSlopes,andFloodplainForest.Thetotalacreagesofeachcritical habitattypeinSharonandthepercentoftypethatisdesignatedasconservedareshowninatableattheendof thissection. Grasslands(LightTan) WhilegrasslandsinNewEnglandwerehistoricallycreatedandmaintainedforagriculturaluses,theyalso providecriticalhabitatforavarietyofwildlifespeciesthatmigratedintoNewEnglandwhen80%oftheforest wasinitiallyconvertedtopastureinthe1800’s.GrasslandshavebecomeincreasinglyuncommoninNew Hampshireasthevastareasofopenpastureandcultivatedfieldthatexistedattheturnofthe19thcenturyhave givenwaytoearlysuccessionalandmaturingsecondgrowthforests.Thischangeinhabitatstructurehasgreatly reducedthenumbersofspeciesthatrelyongrasslandhabitat. Largegrasslandsareespeciallyimportantforwildlifediversity,withseveralspeciesoccurringonlyinthevery largestofgrasslandsareas.Grasslandsaregenerallyactiveorrecentlyabandonedfarmfields.Thiscanalso includeairports,restoredsandandgravelpits,cappedlandfills,orheathlands.Northernharrier,upland sandpiper,purplemartin,bobolinks,easternmeadowlark,grasshoppersparrow,hornedlark,vespersparrow, northernleopardfrogandwoodturtlearealluncommonspeciesthatdependongrasslandhabitatinNew Hampshire. TherearerelativelyfewlargegrasslandareasinSharonandmanyofthesmallergrasslandareasareassociated withresidentialuses.Thelargestconcentrationoflargegrasslandareasthatarestillactivelymanagedare locatedalongSpringHillRoad.ItshouldbenotedthatthegrasslanddataincludedintheWAPmodelwas digitizedfrom2001aerialphotographs.TheupdatedmapshowingopenlandsinSharon,includinggrasslands, openwetlands,andlargepatchcutforestmanagementapplications,wasdigitizedfrom2010highresolution aerialphotographs.

MarshandShrubWetlands(AquaRBlueRGreen) Thislargehabitatgroupincludesdozensofnaturalwetlandcommunitytypes.Theseopenwetlandsare dominatedbyherbaceousvegetationorshort(lessthan3meters)woodyvegetation(i.e.shrubs)andinclude threebroadhabitattypes:wetmeadows,emergentmarshes,andscrubRshrubwetlands.Significantwildlife speciesassociatedwiththeseareasincluderingedbogRhaunterdragonfly,Americanblackduck,American bittern,Americanwoodcock,northernharrier,osprey,piedRbilledgrebe,commonmoorhen,greatblueheron, leastbittern,rustyblackbird,sedgewren,Blanding’sturtle,spottedturtle,easternredbat,silverhairedbat andNewEnglandcottontail.OftenthoughttobesafefromdevelopmentduetoStatewetlandslaws,these habitatsaresusceptibletoimpactsfromthesurroundinguplandsaswellasfromsurfacewatersflowinginto thewetlands. Forthemostpart,MarshandShrubWetlandsinSharonareassociatedwithonethethreemainstreamspassing throughtownandarethereforefairlywelldistributed.Manyoftheseoccurrencesareassociatedwithexisting orformerhumanconstructeddamsandbeaverdams.Asbeaverscomeandgo,thecharacterofwetlandsand marshesassociatedwiththeirdamstendstobeverydynamic. Peatlands(DarkBlue) Peatlandsareacategoryofwetlandthataccumulatesslowlydecomposingvegetativematteraspeat.Peaty wetlandsformduetolimitedornogroundwaterinputandthushavepoornutrientcontentandacidicwater. Thishabitatcategorycontainsmanydozensofnaturalwetlandcommunities,anumberofwhicharerareinNew Hampshire.“Quaking”bogsareonerelativelyuncommontypeofpeatland.Rareplantspeciesareoften associatedwithpeatlands.Associateduncommonwildlifespeciesofnoteincluderingedboghaunterdragonfly, palmwarbler,sprucegrouse,minkfrog,ribbonsnakeandnorthernboglemming. WhilerarethroughoutNewHampshire,theWAPpredictsanumberofsignificantoccurrencesinSharon,several ofwhichmayberelativelylarge.Peatlandsareshowntoberelativelywelldistributedacrossthetown,with largeroccurrences: • alongthenorthendofSwampRoad; •inthelandareaeastofSouthRoadandWestofNHRoute123; • northofJarmanyHillRoadinthecenteroftown; •intheheadwatersofTownLineBrooktributaries;and • southofNHRoute124crossingintoRindgeandNewIpswich Onepeatlandarea,theSharonBog,hasbeendesignatedbytheNewHampshireHeritageBureauasan “ExemplaryNaturalCommunity”. FloodplainForests(Yellow) Associatedwithlargerstreamsandriversandpronetoperiodicflooding,floodplainforestareascontainawide varietyofnaturalcommunitiesthatprovideimportanthabitatforuncommonspecies.Treespeciesfoundin floodplainforestsinclude:redmaples,silvermaples,blackash,blackcherryironwood,andlessfrequently swampwhiteoak,sycamore,Americanelm,easterncottonwood,andriverbirch.Redshoulderedhawk,veery, ceruleanwarbler,Americanredstart,chestnutRsidedwarbler,Baltimoreoriole,beaver,mink,riverotter,wood turtle,Blanding’sturtleandspottedturtlealldependonsuchhabitat.Manyfloodplainforestareashavebeen clearedandconvertedtoagriculture,astheseeasilyworkedandrockRfree,finealluvialsoilstendtobehighly suitableforthisuse.Primarilyforthisreason,intactexamplesofthishabitataremuchlesscommonthanthey oncewere. TheWAPpredictssmallfloodplainforestsinthenorthwestcornerofSharon,withareasalongeithersideofthe areawhereMeadowBrookandTownLineBrookconverge.Anothersmallareaoffloodplainforestispredicted alongthelowerGridleyRiverasitleavesSharon.

TheMonadnockRegionandSharonarepredominantlylocatedinatransitionzonebetweenthesouthernand northernhabitattypes.ThetransitionalhabitattypeiscalledtheHemlockHardwoodPineforest.Thisisthe mostcommonhabitattypeinSharon.InadditiontoHemlockHardwoodPine,therearethreeotherforest habitatsincludingAppalachianOakPineforests,NorthernHardwoodConiferforests,andLowlandSpruceRFir forests. AppalachianOakRPineMatrixForest(Brown) Occurringinasoutherlydistributionrelativetoothers,thismatrixforesttypereachesitsnorthernextentin southeastern,southwesternandfarwesternNewHampshireinassociationwithwarmeranddrierconditions andofteninfireRinfluencedlandscapes.Majorcanopyspeciesincludethe“southern”oakssuchaswhiteand blackoaksaswellasredoakandwhitepine.Thismatrixforesttypeisconsideredatrisk,largelybecauseittends tooccurinpopulatedareaswithimpactsfrominfrastructure,developmentandintensivelanduse.Uncommon wildlifespeciesknowntoassociatewiththismatrixforesttypeincludeblackracer,Fowler’stoad,Eastern hognosesnake,timberrattlesnake,smoothgreensnake,Americanwoodcock,baldeagle,wildturkey,whipR poorwill,woodthrush,easternpipistrelle,andeasternredbat.InSharon,thismatrixforesttypeisrepresented byafewverysmallpatchesintheSharonnorthwestcorner. UnfragmentedareasweredelineatedintheWAPusingroadsdata.A500Rfootbufferalongregularlytraveled (i.e.ecologicallyfragmenting)roadswascreatedforthisanalysis,toaccountforatypicalexistingorfuture houselotanditsstructures,andadisturbanceareaalongmaintainedroads.Thisbufferwasthenremovedfrom thelandscape,resultinginareasunfragmentedbyroadsandtheirassociateddevelopmentordevelopment potential. Blocksofunfragmentedlandsdonotstopatpoliticalboundaries,andthustheanalysisconsideredblocksthat occurinSharonthatinmostinstancesinSharonextendintoneighboringtowns.Forthisanalysis,unfragmented blockswerecalculatedonthebasisoftotalsizeregardlessofpoliticalboundaries.Acreagesintheseothertowns areincludedintheanalysis. LargeblocksofundevelopedlandareoneofthemostimportantpartsoftheMonadnockRegion’slandscapeas wellasthatofSharon.Manyoftheseundevelopedblocksoflandsaremadeupofmultipleparcelsand ownerships.Inadditiontosupportingwildlifehabitatandwaterquality,theseunfragmentedlandssupportthe timberindustry,makingiteconomicaltoharvesttimberacrosslargeownershipswithouthavingtocreate multiplelandingsandconstantlymoveequipment.Theyalsosupportrecreationandtourism,providinglarge expansesofwoodlands,fieldsandwetlandsthatmakeupthescenicbackdropforourcommunitiesandour favoriteplacestorecreate.Protectingtheseareasfromthroughroadsthatresultintraffic,noise,development andotherdisturbanceswillhelpensurewildlifewillcontinueusingtheseareasandthatpeoplecanenjoythe wilderness. 4.WorkingLandsResourceMaps ForestProductivity TheeconomicbenefitsofforestlandstothestateofNewHampshirearewellknown.TownsinNewHampshire traditionallyderiverevenuefromthetimbertaxcollectedfromtimbersales,andtheharvest,saleandutilization ofwoodproductsallcontributetothejobbaseofthestate.Keepingforestlandinproductiveuseprovidesan economicallyviablealternativetomoreintensiveusessuchasresidentialdevelopment.Forestlandoffers additionalbenefitsaswell,includingpreservationofruralcharacter,wildlifehabitat,waterqualityprotection, recreationalopportunities,huntingandfishingaccess,andscenicenjoyment,amongothers. Soilsarethebasisofproductiveforestland,butnotallsoilsarecreatedequalintheircapacitytogrowforests. AreaswithsoilsthatareclassedbytheNRCSasmoreproductivethanothersfortheirsuitabilitytosupport someofthemosteconomicallyvaluablespecies,suchaswhitepineandredoak,areespeciallyimportantto preserve.ThesesoRcalledImportantForestSoilshavedesignationsunderwhichnumerousparticularsoilsunits aregroupedaccordingtocommontraitssuchasmoisture,depthofsoil,andsoiltexture. ProductiveForestSoils TheNaturalResourceConservationService(NRCS),adivisionoftheUnitedStatesDepartmentofAgriculture,is responsibleformaintainingthecountysoilsurveysthroughouttheUnitedStates.TheHillsboroughCountySoil SurveycontainssoilmapsandinformationforthetownofSharon.Onewayinwhichsoilsareclassifiedisby theirForestGrouping.Theforestsoilgroupingsaredefinedbytheirabilitytoregenerateforestproductsand theirsuitabilitytomechanizedharvesting.Therearethreegroupsofforestsoils,GroupI,GroupII,andSoilsnot suitableforForestry.GroupIForestSoilsaresoilsthatarehighlyfertileandsupporthighgrowthratesin timber.TherearethreesubgroupsinGroupIForestSoilsthatdelineatewhichspeciesoftreeswillgrowbest basedonmineralandwatercontentcharacteristics.GroupIIForestSoilsarelimitedintheirabilitytosupport thetimberindustryinoneoftwoways.Thefirstdeficiencycouldbesteepnessorrockinessthatmake mechanizedharvestingdifficult.Anotherdeficiencycouldbealackoffertilityoroversaturationthatcauseslow growthratesorsusceptibilityoftreestodamagesuchaswindthroworpests. LandswithImportantConservationValues Thismapsummarizesthelandsthathavebeenidentifiedascontainingoneormorenaturaland/orcommunity resourcesthatrepresentimportantconservationvalues.Thisdeterminationisbasedonananalysisofall naturalresourceinventorydatalayers,informedbylocalknowledgeofthetownlandscape,andconsideration ofcommunityvalues.Thelandswithimportantconservationvaluesincludethefollowing: RivercorridorsandwetlandsassociatedwiththeGridleyRiver,MeadowBrook,TownLineBrook,and their tributaries. These resources include 600 foot buffers along the streams and 100 foot buffers aroundthewetlandsandponds. Stratifieddriftaquiferswithmoderateorbetterflowpotentials. Largeblocksofundevelopedland,whichprovidesignificantconservationvaluefromawildlife,water quality,recreation,worklands,andaestheticperspectivebecauseoftheirsizeandlowlevelsofhuman disturbance. o TheblockbetweenJarmanyHillRoadandNHRte.124; o TheTownForestblocknorthofJarmanyHillRoad;and o TheblockbetweenNHRte.123andTempleMountain. Connectors and corridors between the large blocks of undeveloped land that benefit wildlife populations,recreation,andaestheticqualitiesofthelandscape. Ridgelines,viewsheds,andsteepslopestoreducethepotentiallandslides,erosionandsediment transportthatcanadverselyaffectwaterqualityandwhichoftenprovideimportantcorridorsfor wildlife.
