FOR GREENOCK; ROBERT WALLACE, ESQ. OF KELLY, late M, P. FOR GREENOCK; SIR JOHN MAXWELL OF POLLOK, BART.; AND THE MAGISTRATES AND TOWN COUNCIL OF PAISLEY, BY THEIR MOST OBEDIENT HUMBLE SERVANT, GEORGE FOWLER. ADDRESS. G. FOWLER, ill presenting to the public the Eleventh Edition of the Directory, returns his sincere thanks to those -who have sup- ported this Work hitherto. As the chief value of a work of this kind consists in accuracy of detail, and distinctness of arrangement, the present Publisher has in this, as in all his former Editions of the Directory, spared nei- ther labour nor expense in securing these ; and as the compilation of a work of tliis kind is attended with a very great degree of labour, and not a little expense, which can only be compensated by ^n extensive sale of the Work, he trusts he will meet with a suit- able degree of encouragement from a discerning public. The Lists and Tables inserted in the appendixes will be found of the most useful description, and suitable not only to the Merchant and Trader, but to the Public generally—a Directory being not only a useful, but a highly necessary repository for enabling a commer- cial people to become acquainted with each other. The Publisher could not help observing, in the course of his survey for this Edition of the Directory, that many of the numbers of the houses, &c., are either partially or wholly obliterated, and that many of the old numbers, wliich ought to have been obliterated when the houses were numbered on the present plan, are still visible —a circumstance that is apt to mislead or create confusion. He would, therefore, take the liberty of calling the attention of the Police Commissioners, and of Proprietors, Shopkeepers, &c., to these defects, with a recommendation to have them speedily rectified, that being essential to the convenience of strangers, and no less so to the safe and prompt delivery of letters and packages, in which every class of the inhabitants, but especially the Mercantile and Manu- facturing classes, are interested ; and is, in fact, an incumbent duty on the Police to see carried into eflFect. All Communications^ post-paid, will be duly attended to. i^° Orders Received for every New Periodical Publication. Renfrewshire Directory Opfice, 43 High Street, Pais'ey, iHo. He played Scots, English, Irish and Italian tunes to great perfection. People used to stop and listen in the High Street. But on this day in 1707, knowing the whole city was listening and understanding his choice, the carilloner chose to play the most ironic musical gesture Scotland has ever known: Why should I be sad on my wedding day? 1757 Thomas Telford, the great engineer was born Bach-Short Mass Thomas Wilson Born Colorado, USA, but grew up in Glasgow area and studied music at Glasgow University, and in 1957 accepted a teaching post there. ISSN 1364-9809 http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/37849/ Deposited on: 02 April 2012 Enlighten – Research publications by members of the University of Glasgow http://eprints.gla.ac.uk EdinLR Vol 8 pp 298-328 The Early Career of Thomas Craig, Advocate John Finlay* Analysis of the clients of the advocate and jurist Thomas Craig of Riccarton in a formative period of his practice as an advocate can be valuable in demonstrating the dynamics of a career that was to be noteworthy not only in Scottish but in international terms. However, it raises the question of whether Craig’s undoubted reputation as a writer has led to a misleading assessment of his prominence as an advocate in the legal profession of his day. A. INTRODUCTION Thomas Craig (c 1538–1608) is best known to posterity as the author of Jus Feudale and as a commissioner appointed by James VI in 1604 to discuss the possi- bility of a union of laws between England and Scotland.1 Following from the latter enterprise, he was the author of De Hominio (published in 1695 as Scotland”s * Lecturer in Law, University of Glasgow. The research required to complete this article was made possible by an award under the research leave scheme of the Arts and Humanities Research Board and the author is very grateful for this support. He also wishes to thank Dr Sharon Adams, Mr John H Ballantyne, Dr Julian Goodare and Mr W D H Sellar for comments on drafts of this article, the anonymous reviewer for the Edinburgh Law Review, and also the members of the Scottish Legal History Group to whom an early version of this paper was presented in October 2003.

  • Renowned Engineer & Bridge Builder Sir William Arrol Is Featured In
Renowned Engineer & Bridge Builder Sir William Arrol is Featured in National Science & Engineering Week 2014 : Building Bridges : Rozelle House, Ayr : 22 & 23 March 2014 Friends of Seafield House (FoSH) is pleased to be participating for a second year in South Ayrshire Council’s National Science & Engineering Week programme, which takes place at Rozelle House over the weekend of 22 & 23 March 2014. FoSH is contributing a two-cabinet display exhibition on renowned engineer & bridge builder Sir William Arrol (1839-1913) whose home for many years was Seafield House in Ayr. It is fitting that Sir William Arrol is featured in this year’s “Building Bridges” programme, given the Scottish Government’s recent submission of its bid to UNESCO for World Heritage status for the Forth Rail Bridge, one of Sir William Arrol’s construction marvels. “Building Bridges” is one of two themes that South Ayrshire Council has chosen for its programme in National Science & Engineering Week 2014 under the event title “Steps to Discovery 2014: Bicycles, Bridges and Beyond”. Our contribution focuses on three of Sir William’s iconic bridges: the Forth Rail Bridge, Middlesborough Transporter Bridge & London Tower Bridge. In partnership with the Meccano Society of Scotland, FoSH is offering bridge building activity and the opportunity to see working scale models of these Arrol bridges made by Meccano Society of Scotland members. FoSH Committee Member Kirsty Menzies has sourced the film “The River is Spanned”, a reconstruction of the building of the Forth Rail Bridge using original photographs. Made in 1950, the film is shown by courtesy of filmmaker Harry Birrell & the Scottish Screen Archive.

It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography.

  • Mcewen Concert Programme 2020
5 March 2020 McEwen Memorial Concert of Scottish Chamber Music Thursday 5 March, 2020 1.10pm University Concert Hall Nanhai Piano Trio Gongbo Jiang (violin), Robert Anderson (cello), and Gordon Bragg (piano) David Horne Reflecting Instruments* *Commissioned by the Court of the University of Glasgow under the terms of the McEwen Bequest. Additional funding towards today’s performance has been provided by the Ferguson Bequest. While I have a large number of chamber works including four string quartets, a piano quartet and two piano quintets, this is the first work I have composed for Piano Trio. It is fair to say that the wonderful Piano Trio by Maurice Ravel has always been inspirational to me, including as a pianist when I performed the work many times. While there are no direct allusions to that great work, I was motivated to explore a wide range of colour and textures in my own piece, with the trio frequently coalescing and separating texturally. As the title suggests, there is a great deal of interplay between the timbres of the various instruments and how they interplay, indeed reflect each other. From the outset the piano seems to echo and even resonate the sounds of the strings, though as the work progresses this relationship often reverses, with the strings emulating the harmonics of the piano, its pedalling and resonance. There is another aspect of the music’s language which will not be apparent to the listener but is worth noting. In much of my work I am fascinated by the nature of instruments and how their own idioms often inspire and lead musical ideas.
