  • When God Says “No” Lesson One
When God Says “No” Lesson One Focal Text: 1 Chronicles 28:1-10 Background: Job 38:1-8 Teaching Aim: To lead members to reflect on the legacy they are leaving behind and determine ways to make that legacy more in keeping with God’s plan for their lives. Connect with Life: Begin with a challenge for members to reflect on the legacy they are leaving behind if today was the last day of their life. In other words, what would their loved ones and friends say was most important in their life based on their actions? Then ask members if they would like to make any changes in their life message? Share with members that in our study for today we will be reminded of the legacy left behind by David with his final words that reflected the life he lived. We will discover some aspects of his legacy that can be applied to our own legacy revisions. Guide Bible Study: Then lead members to identify these aspects of David’s legacy as found in our focal passage for this study. Suggested aspects and related commentary are as follows: 1. Humility (28:1-2a). David demonstrated humility throughout his life and in this final gathering of the Jewish leaders. Even though David was their king, he referred to them as brothers and “my people.” He was certainly identifying with them as an equal before God. We will also see his humility in our discussion of verse 5. David included all of the leaders in this final gathering before his death in order to remind them of the legacy he was leaving behind.

  • 1 Chronicles Chapter 28
1 Chronicles Chapter 28 In verses 28:1 – 29:20: A record is given of David’s last assembly in which the king charged Solomon and the people to build the temple for God’s glory. These final chapters present the transition from David to Solomon. The chronicler does not mention Adonijah’s conspiracy (1 Kings 1:5-9), or David’s weakness (1 Kings 1:1-4), but looks at the positive contribution of the Davidic kingdom. Verses 1-2: David is portrayed as a healthy man who “stood up upon his feet”, a quite different description than that of the elderly, dying David (in 1 Kings 1:1). Neither Adonijah’s rebellion (1 Kings 1:5-10), nor the dramatic way Solomon became king (1 Kings 1:11-31), is mentioned. The details were chosen to present David as a unifier of Israel. 1 Chronicles 28:1 "And David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the captains over the thousands, and captains over the hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possession of the king, and of his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the valiant men, unto Jerusalem." This is the third telling of the Lord’s promise to “David.” The Davidic covenant was announced to David (17:1-27; compare 2 Sam. 7:2-29), and was related by David to Solomon (22:6-13), and is now rehearsed by David in the hearing of “all Israel” (verses 2-8).

Carroll Theological Institute Plano, Texas Studies in Solomon: No Ordinary Kind of Wisdom (1 & 2 Chronicles) Lesson Two Passing the Torch Focal Text 1 Chronicles 28:11-21 Background 1 Chronicles 13 Main Idea Pain will always be part of our lives, but we should never lose faith in Jesus Christ. Question to Explore How can I not lose faith when my world is falling apart? Quick Read We must not aspire to do God’s work alone; it is in every way better that we should share the privilege and the responsibility with others. Introduction Our family made the obligatory American visit to Disney World when our girls were in elementary school. It was truly magical what the human mind and ingenuity can manufacture. From life-like topiaries to imaginary characters that came alive before my children’s eyes, the quality of craftsmanship was beyond what I had experienced before. • “” (1 Chronicles 28:1–21)
“Surpass Dad” (1 Chronicles 28–29) I have always wanted to be like my Dad. When I was growing up, I wanted to be 6”2’ like my Dad. I wanted to be able to grow a heavy beard like my Dad. I wanted to be able to handle a gas powered weed eater like my Dad. I wanted to drive a Subaru like my Dad. I wanted to cook chicken and dumplings like my Dad. I wanted to be able to write like my Dad. Sadly, I haven’t been able to realize any of these desires. But now that I am grown up (mostly), I have a new set of desires. I still want to be like my Dad; I just have different priorities. Now, I want to love my wife for forty-five years like my Dad. I want to raise godly children who love the Lord like my Dad. I want to finish my career as a man of integrity like my Dad. I want to love the local and worldwide church like my Dad. I want to prioritize the eternal in my time, treasures, and talents, like my Dad. I hope that I will be able to realize these desires. My Dad has entrusted to me in incredible spiritual legacy. I want to live up to this great responsibility. In fact, my desire, somehow, by God’s grace, is to surpass my Dad in godliness and kingdom impact. This is also my Dad’s passion for me. He has invested everything he can in my spiritual success.

But the most important truth to know is God. INTRODUCTION A. This was a very solemn occasion. B. What did he need to know about God? 1. He needed to know that He is holy, pure, ever- 1. David was near death. present, and all-observing. 2. He had called the young and tender Solomon to him. 2. He needed to know He claims our reverence, love, obedience, and submission. 3. He wanted Solomon to carry on the work he had begun. 3. He needed to know He condemns our ingratitude, our departure from Himself, and 4. David’s deepest concern was that Solomon be our sin.

So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. 7 Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from My decrees and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you, says the Lord Almighty. But you ask, “How are we to return?” 8 Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob Me. But you ask, “How are we robbing You?” In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing Me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

  • David's Worship
December 1 Lesson 1 (NIV) DAVID’S WORSHIP DEVOTIONAL READING: 1 Chronicles 16:7–13, 28–33 BACKGROUND SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 6:12–16; 1 Chronicles 15 1 CHRONICLES 15:1–3, 14–16, 25–29A 1 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever.” 3 David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it. 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD. 16 David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals. 25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs.
