President’s Message

By Don Danko

Hard to believe, but our 15th Extravaganza has now come and gone! It was another successful show, with over 300 attendees and 1100+ bags in the auction. We had a great line-up of activities with great speakers, a huge pizza party, two auctions and even a Swap Meet. The theme of this particular bulletin is a review of this fine show, so check out more about it in this issue.

During the Pizza Party at the Extravaganza, we presented a check for $1000 to Ad Konings from the Jim Smith Fund to build and deploy more Anti Netting Devices (ANDs) in Lake Malawi. The award represented the second from the Fund for this purpose. This is a great example of how your donations to the Jim Smith Fund are helping to better the hobby and to help preserve cichlids in their native habitat. Thanks for all that have donated items to the Fund and to those that plan to do so.

At the November meeting, we hosted a Swap Meet as an alternative to a monthly speaker. It was very well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy finding new as well as all the socializing opportunities that such a venue presents.

At the December membership meeting, we will be having a Christmas party (no speaker), with the following key activities:

1. Pot Luck Dinner - please bring a hot dish or a dessert to share with the other members. Rumor has it that Phil Ayres is bringing his excellent chicken soup from down in the Holler!

2. “Blind Gift Exchange” – bring something from your fish room to exchange with others that bring gifts to swap.

3. Special Jim Smith raffle/auction.

Also in December, we’ll be having our annual elections for the Board of the OCA. If you are interested in holding a board position, talk to one of the current board members to learn more about what is entailed.

Keep current on OCA activities by visiting our website, at www.ohiocichlid.com, and by checking out our forum. There is a link to the forum from the website.

Here’s hoping you survived the bustle of Extravaganza 2009 and found some interesting species in the process. Late in the auction on Sunday I was lucky enough to score a bag of Shell Dwellers and a bag small Central’s. In this issue you’ll find some pics from last weekend as well as some comments left for us by some of those who attended this year’s event. If you had fish in the show and weren’t at the awards ceremony, I’ve included the winners for all classes inside. IF you weren’t able to make it to Extravaganza 2009, mark your calendar now for Extravaganza 2010. It’s truly a weekend not to be missed.

I know that Christmas seems a long way off, but this weekend is our Holiday party. The December meeting tends to be the most well attended meeting of the year, so make sure you are a part of the action. This meeting will feature our yearly feast, so bring a covered dish and your appetite. We’ll be electing the board members for 2010 and usually have some fun surprises in store for you. It‘s a great event for the entire family and I hope I’ll see you there on Friday.

Lastly, I know I’m always on you to send in your membership contribution. The Ohio Cichlid Association has over 150 members after Extravaganza weekend, and if you haven’t sent in your membership for 2010, please do so immediately. Our membership is such a great deal that people from all over the US joined so that they can be in the loop on all of the happenings within The Ohio Cichlid Association. So take a moment and send a check to the club, pay online using our paypal account, or see one of the membership team at the next meeting. As we grow the club gets better as do the amount and quality of species available to members of the OCA. Please join today. We want you as a member of the coolest cichlid and catfish club on the planet!

Talk to you next month,

-Editors Note: This was an amazing showing and congrats again to all who won or placed in a class. If you are a new member or a member who has not participated in this show but always wanted to participate, here’s an insiders tip: Look at the categories where there were few entries, particularly those with less than 3 entries. Explore the species within the classes to find one that sparks your interest. You may find a fish that you may have overlooked in the past or have never considered. I’ve found many fish that have become my favorites this way. Next year you may find that your fish places or better yet, takes #1! It’s a great way to give yourself a goal to work towards and in the end, it will expand the amount of species that you have experienced within the hobby.

Who is Jim Smith and what is the Jim Smith Fund?

-by Frank Mueller*

I am from a generation of OCA members who did not actually know Jim Smith personally, but I sure have heard a lot about him. ‘Father Christmas’ is usually mentioned when long time OCA members talk about him, and big smiles appear on people’s faces whenever his name comes up - the kind of smile that you usually see when people reminisce about fond childhood memories. Jim is said to have been great with kids - he even taught the kids of some OCA members to color, count, and read. Many people found a true friend in him. He was a key board member of the OCA for about a decade, and under his watch OCA membership grew to over 250 - the largest ever! Jim passed away in 2003, and in that same year the OCA established a fund with the intention of supporting cichlid research, education and conservation projects. A general meeting unanimously agreed to name this fund Jim Smith Fund in honor of the late OCA membership chairman.

By December 2008 over $5000 had accumulated in the Jim Smith Fund, with former OCA vice president and current program chairman Dan Woodland being the champion for the fund- raising activities. At the same time, an excellent opportunity presented itself to contribute to a low-cost, high-impact cichlid conservation project, the Stuart M Grant Cichlid Conservation Fund under the stewardship of Ad Konings. Ad explains all the details about the project on his web site at www.cichlidpress.com and in addition to showing lots of photos you’ll also find video footage. In a nutshell, the project is about supporting local people in Malawi in their efforts of protecting cichlid populations in Lake Malawi against irresponsible and illegal over-fishing.

This is done in a part of the Lake that became a National Park in 1980 and a World Heritage Area in 1983. Fishing is forbidden in this area, but local authorities lack the means to enforce this with the result that nets have uprooted and eliminated entire populations of water . This, in turn, has lead to the virtual disappearance of sand dwelling cichlids, and the rock dwelling cichlids were threatened as well, because the illegal fishing targeted them next. In 2006 a group of Malawians called Waterlands received Government funding to develop and employ Anti Netting Devices (ANDs) that would hinder the illegal fishermen from pulling a net at any point in the no-fishing zone. The ANDs consist of an anchor, a steel cable, and a floating device that catches the net. Since October 2007 about 150 ANDs have been in service, and they have proven to the remarkably effective - water and fish populations are recovering in the protected areas, which benefits even those local fishermen who are allowed to fish beyond the 100 meter boundary of the Park. They have commented that there seem to be more fish around again.

The ANDs cost about $13 per piece to produce, and it is estimated that 2000 of them would be needed to protect the entire shoreline of the park - a cost of about $26,000. In December 2008, the OCA Board agreed to contribute $1,000 from the Jim Smith fund to this cause. At the Extravaganza 2009 the OCA donated another $1000 from its Jim Smith Fund for the ANDs project.

The OCA will keep up with fund-raising activities like auctions and raffles at meetings and events to benefit the Jim Smith Fund. Please continue to support these efforts so that we can help to fund cichlid research, education, and conservation projects in the future!

Bulletin Editor and Extravaganza MC, Kyle May look on. The OCA membership offers a rousing round of applause for the Jim Smith donation to the Stuart M. Grant Cichlid Conservation Fund.

-Editors note: You can support the Jim Smith Fund in several ways. You can offer a cash donation at any OCA meeting, auction, or event. You can also donate gently used hard goods or bags of fish to be auctioned off with the proceeds being donated to the fund. The OCA Board voted to donate to The Stuart M. Grant Cichlid Conservation Fund because this fund is making an impact on the endangered Malawi cichlid population right now. Over-fishing is wiping out the fish that we all love and the AND’s described in the preceding story are effectively protecting a significant population of cichlids from extinction. Please consider a donation to The Jim Smith Fund this year. Your donation will be used to fund other projects of interest to the cichlid and catfish community.
