Next Meeting: Friday December 4th at 8pm OCA Mission The OCA is an organization dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of information relating to all aspects of the biology of cichlids and related aquatic life. Our purpose is to promote the interest, keeping, study, breeding, and the educational exhibition of Cichlids. Additionally, the exchange of ideas, meeting new people, and distribution of information concerning Cichlids is of primary interest. On The Cover This month’s cover features a pic from Extravaganza 2009. President’s Message By Don Danko Hard to believe, but our 15th Extravaganza has now come and gone! It was another successful show, with over 300 attendees and 1100+ bags in the auction. We had a great line-up of activities with great speakers, a huge pizza party, two auctions and even a Swap Meet. The theme of this particular bulletin is a review of this fine show, so check out more about it in this issue. During the Pizza Party at the Extravaganza, we presented a check for $1000 to Ad Konings from the Jim Smith Fund to build and deploy more Anti Netting Devices (ANDs) in Lake Malawi. The award represented the second from the Fund for this purpose. This is a great example of how your donations to the Jim Smith Fund are helping to better the hobby and to help preserve cichlids in their native habitat. Thanks for all that have donated items to the Fund and to those that plan to do so. At the November meeting, we hosted a Swap Meet as an alternative to a monthly speaker. It was very well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy finding new fish as well as all the socializing opportunities that such a venue presents. At the December membership meeting, we will be having a Christmas party (no speaker), with the following key activities: 1. Pot Luck Dinner - please bring a hot dish or a dessert to share with the other members. Rumor has it that Phil Ayres is bringing his excellent chicken soup from down in the Holler! 2. “Blind Gift Exchange” – bring something from your fish room to exchange with others that bring gifts to swap. 3. Special Jim Smith raffle/auction. Also in December, we’ll be having our annual elections for the Board of the OCA. If you are interested in holding a board position, talk to one of the current board members to learn more about what is entailed. Keep current on OCA activities by visiting our website, at www.ohiocichlid.com, and by checking out our forum. There is a link to the forum from the website. Don The kkkkk View From Here… By Kyle May - Bulletin Editor Here’s hoping you survived the bustle of Extravaganza 2009 and found some interesting species in the process. Late in the auction on Sunday I was lucky enough to score a bag of Shell Dwellers and a bag small Central’s. In this issue you’ll find some pics from last weekend as well as some comments left for us by some of those who attended this year’s event. If you had fish in the show and weren’t at the awards ceremony, I’ve included the winners for all classes inside. IF you weren’t able to make it to Extravaganza 2009, mark your calendar now for Extravaganza 2010. It’s truly a weekend not to be missed. I know that Christmas seems a long way off, but this weekend is our Holiday party. The December meeting tends to be the most well attended meeting of the year, so make sure you are a part of the action. This meeting will feature our yearly feast, so bring a covered dish and your appetite. We’ll be electing the board members for 2010 and usually have some fun surprises in store for you. It‘s a great event for the entire family and I hope I’ll see you there on Friday. Lastly, I know I’m always on you to send in your membership contribution. The Ohio Cichlid Association has over 150 members after Extravaganza weekend, and if you haven’t sent in your membership for 2010, please do so immediately. Our membership is such a great deal that people from all over the US joined so that they can be in the loop on all of the happenings within The Ohio Cichlid Association. So take a moment and send a check to the club, pay online using our paypal account, or see one of the membership team at the next meeting. As we grow the club gets better as do the amount and quality of species available to members of the OCA. Please join today.
