Its world famous fairy tale spires, broad rock plateaus and mountain lakes provide a uniquely stunning environment. Its plunging forested valleys deservedly attract mountain lovers and keen walkers. One Foot Abroad are proud to offer this destination to you. This adventurous trip takes you to the highest part of the Dolomites, following rivers and lakes. You will experience the contrast between the lush green valley and the massive limestone peaks looming above you. This trip alternates between nights in Cortina and high mountain refuges. This enables you to enjoy the comfort of a hotel, as well as getting the unique feeling of high altitude while staying in amazingly located refuges. Every day you have a choice between a “Moderate+” or a “Challenging” itinerary, starting and finishing at the same point. This way, you can vary the difficulty by doing some challenging days and some easier days, depending on the weather, your fitness and experience and what you fancy. In Cortina, you will stay in comfortable hotels, ranging from 2* to 4*. From this vibrant and tourist-friendly town, the impressive mountains around are easily accessible. Excellent restaurants and nice pubs offer some well-deserved refreshments! Day 2 : Cortina d’Ampezzo to Sesto (Refuge Locatelli) After a short bus transfer to lake Landro, the ascent to one of the greatest highlights of the Dolomites can begin. It is a steady ascent of more than 1000m that will take you directly in front of the mighty Tre Cime. These 3 peaks are emblematic of the Dolomites. The famous Refuge Locatelli will receive you with refreshments and a hearty meal. Walkers who enjoy a challenge can take a hike around the Tre Cime and observe the peaks from every angle. Day 3: Back to Cortina d’Ampezzo – Tre Cime area This walk was the scene of tragic war act during WWI. You can still see the evidence of these atrocities by walking through the war tunnel of Paterno and the curious looking Sasso di Sesto. The walk leads to the pretty refuge Cengia (2528m), then down into a silent otherworldly ‘amphitheatre’. Then it’s on to the refuge Auronzo, for a short transfer back to Cortina. Day 4: Cortina d’Ampezzo to Cinque Torri (Refuge Lagazoui) After a pleasant transfer on the open-air ski lift, this walk will take you to the very foot of the eroded rock towers of the Cinque Torri. Then, we walk around Nuvolau using either a dramatic and technical path by Ra Gusela (2574m), or an easier path by Passo Giau (2236m) before reaching Passo Falzarego (2105m). Here, you take an enormous cable car up to Refuge Lagazuoi (2752m), where we spend the night in the amazing surroundings of the Tofane range. One Foot Abroad – Tel: + 353 1 687 21 41– [email protected] Page 2 of 7 © One Foot Abroad – All Rights Reserved Day 5: Refuge Lagazuoi – Circular walk Tofane As it is not possible to ascend any higher from the Refuge Lagazuoi (2752m), today we begin by descending to 2030m . We take a right to climb steeply through scrub and past a waterfall for a relentless ascent via moderately exposed natural ledges cut into the sheer Nemesis rock point. This leads to the wondrous lunar-like Masare amphitheatre and eventually to Refuge Giussani (2600m). The walk continues down to Col dei Bos (2400m) and Passo Falzarego (2105m), from which the cable car takes you back up to Refuge Lagazuoi (2752m). Day 6: Back to Cortina d’Ampezzo – Val Travenanzes This challenging route begins with an exhilarating underground ascent via a remarkable tunnel hewn into the mountainside by the Italian WW1 forces. We climb a total of 647m with the help of rock steps and guiding cables fixed to the walls. The tunnel measures 1100m in length and boasts a gradient verging 45 degrees! Then we descend the Val Travenanzes, haunt of Chamois (a native species of goat-antelope) and Marmots (ground squirrels) to conclude with the impressive Fanes waterfall – its 70m drop evidently placing it as the highest waterfall in the Dolomites. Day 7: Cortina d’Ampezzo – End of the trip After breakfast, we bid you farewell. However, you can extend your stay in Cortina to explore this area further and add extra nights. His invaluable little volume, which appeared in the same year and was the first of its kind, was entitled “Alta Via delle Dolomiti” and bore the number 1. It was published by Tamari Editori of Bologna, with several further editions in sub- sequent years. This Alta Via, just like its famous sister routes, has the peculiar characteristics of a long hike which can be divided up into various days. Refuges and fixed bivouacs can offer comfort at the stop-off points, but for those wishing to emulate the pioneers a tent or a sleeping bag can suffice. The basic route follows paths that are not particularly difficult for an experienced hill-walker, at least those of the Croda dei Tóni and the Antelao; in addition, passages or stretches that are a little rough are always equipped.

DOLOMITI SNOW AND NATURE Glaciers, Nature, Snow and history The Dolomites (Dolomiti) are a beautiful mountain range in northern Italy. Homebase of the snow and sky lovers, this enchanting region offers more than one reason to be astonished: nature, trails, snow, glaciers, and historic sites as well. Our places of choice in the area, where a special tour can be arranged on request, are: Cortina d’Ampezzo Val Gardena: Beautifully situated in the center of a vast valley, the valley d’Ampezzo, crowned by the superb mountain peaks of Cristallo and Tofane, Cortina is the heart of the Dolomiti of the Veneto. The happy setting allows easy access to all the other nearby locations through the “passi”, passes, of Falzarego, Giau and Tre Croci. Cortina is the Queen of the Dolomiti and is the biggest and most famous of the 18 provinces that form the Ladinia. Cortina is situated at the top of the Valle del Boite, and is positioned between Cadore (south) and the Puster Valley(north), Val d' Ansiei (east) and Agordo (west). It is encircled 360° by the Dolomites. Among the more famous mountains are Tofane, Pomagagnon, Cristallo, Faloria and Sorapis, and Becco di Mezzodì, Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri. The city centre is located at an elevation of 1,224 metres (4,016 ft), although the highest summit is that of the Tofana di Mezzo, which towers at 3,244 metres (10,643 ft). There is a significant water presence in the territory, in the form of torrents, streams and little lakes (Ghedina, Pianozes, d'Ajal), which fill particularly during the summer snow-melt season.

This status was awarded for their uniquely beautiful landscape and because of the scientific importance of their geology and geomorphology. The Dolomites are listed as a serial property because, despite its size and diversity, the entire range is considered to be a single unit. This extraordinary “fossil archipelago” consists of nine areas spread over five Italian provinces (Belluno, Bolzano, Pordenone, Trento, Udine), although the Province of Belluno is home to the greatest number of these magnificent peaks. CORTINA D’AMPEZZO An exclusive, elegant resort, loved the world over, Cortina is the beating heart of the Dolomites. Surrounded on every side by such magnificent peaks as Tofane, Cristallo and Pomagagnon, these mountains are all part of the Dolomite World Heritage Site, ma- king it the ideal place to experience the full glory of this exceptio- nal environment, with its stunning array of landscapes each with its own special character. Mountain ranges 1 (Pelmo-Croda da Lago), and 5 (Dolomiti Settentrionali) form a crown around Corti- na and also link with the other Dolomite ranges. This open-air laboratory has been a place of pilgrimage for over 150 years for scientists and students, making it the birthplace of some of the fundamental theories in the earth sciences. Cortina owes its enviable fame not only to the splendour of its landscape, but also to the warm welcome it extends to visitors, playing host to international sporting and cultural events that take on a very special magic when set in this mountain location.
