What does the name Onesimus mean? The name Onesimus can be found in the book of Philemon. Onesimus was a runaway slave who stole from his master Philemon. We don’t know the exact details of Onesimus encounter with Paul. But we know Paul was in jail when he shared the gospel with Onesimus. And Onesimus was radically changed (v. 10). Following Onesimus conversion Paul wrote a reconciliation letter on behalf of Onesi- Onesimus mus to Philemon. He wrote asking Philemon to for- give Onesimus and to accept him back, not as a School slave, but as a brother in Christ (v. 16).
