Contact: [email protected] PLEASURE, AGENCY, SPACE AND PLACE: AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF YOUTH DRINKING CULTURES IN A SOUTH WEST LONDON COMMUNITY By Laura Kelly Barnett Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2017 ABSTRACT Media, government and public discourse in the UK associate young drinkers as mindless, hedonistic consumers of alcohol, resulting in young people epitomising ‘Binge Britain’. This preoccupation with ‘binge’ drinking amplifies moral panics surrounding youth alcohol consumption whereby consideration of the social and cultural nuances of pleasure that give meaning to young people’s excessive drinking practices and values has been given little priority. This sociological study explores how young drinkers regulate their drinking practices through levels of agency which is informed by values linked to the pursuit of pleasurable intoxication alongside friendship groups in a variety of drinking settings. -

Schon seit 1551 ist die Germania in unserem Familienbesitz. 1882 brannte sie bei dem großen Altstadtbrand völlig nieder und wurde 1883 gleichzeitig mit der Einweihung des Niederwalddenkmals „Germania“ wieder aufgebaut - daher auch der Name. Vor dem Brand betrieb unsere Familie eine eigene kleine Brauerei, deshalb eröffnete ich 1983 „Hajo’s Bierakademie“ (seit 2008 „Hajo’s Irish Pub“) um diese Tradition fort zusetzen. Mittlerweile ist der Name Programm. Mit der in Rüdesheim einmaligen Mischung aus Tradition und moderner Eventkultur versuche ich seit Jahren unseren Familienbetrieb zu erhalten. Aus diesem Grunde hoffe ich, dass Sie sich in meinem Haus wohlfühlen. Für Anregungen oder Kritik stehe ich Ihnen gerne zur Verfügung. Bound to tradition Bound to tradition Germania Lodge is owned by our family since 1551. After the big fire in the historical district from 1882, Germania hotel was burned to the ground. In 1883 it was reopened, time similar to the erection of the Germania monument, from which its name originates. Prior to the fire our family was operating a little brewery and to keep tradition alive I founded „Hajos Beeracademy“ in 1983 (since 2008 “Hajo’s Irish Pub”). By now this slogan has become the daily routine. Within the unique mixture between tradition and event culture I am trying to uphold the family business for years. For this very reason I do hope that you feel comfortable in my house. If you should have any suggestions on how to improve, or some kind of criticism, do not hesitate to speak to me. -

1 BREAKFAST AND BRUNCH COCKTAILS— The All-Night Party Crowd’s Eye-Openers eather-clad rock-and-rollers, the sequined jet set, even seer-sucker wearing Southern- L ers who still fancy plantation lifestyle bask in sleeping late and discovering a cocktail await- ing them at brunch. For sleepy-eyed morning haters, a nip or two—just so the boss can’t smell— in the juice offers the jazzy jolt needed to embrace stark sunlight. Weekend pajama-happy rebels play naughty by downing a fizzy cocktail before noon on a lazy Sunday morning while div- ing into the newspaper. Then consider pool par- ties in the Hamptons or country club bridal brunches where a cocktail is just what the bar- tender ordered. Whether spicy or fizzy, breakfast cocktails jump-start the day with a boisterous bang. 1. BLOODY MARY Say Bloody Mary three times before bedtime. When you wake up in the morning, be sure to have one. 1 1/2 ounces vodka (or peppered vodka for spice) 3 ounces tomato juice 1/2 ounce lemon juice Dash or two Tabasco sauce Dash or two Worcestershire sauce Pinch of celery salt Pinch of pepper Dab of horseradish 1. Chill a cocktail shaker. 2. Add vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Tabasco sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. 3. Add salt, pepper, and horseradish to taste. 4. Pour into a chilled collins glass or beer mug. 5. Garnish with a lime slice or a celery stalk. Also preferred as garnishes: pickled green beans, okra pods, and garlic stuffed olives.
