  • For Immediate Release: Wilco Hosts Headcount and Patagonia Inc.'S “Vote the Environment” Campaign at U.S. Tour Stops
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: WILCO HOSTS HEADCOUNT AND PATAGONIA INC.’S “VOTE THE ENVIRONMENT” CAMPAIGN AT U.S. TOUR STOPS - Non-partisan voter registration drive paired with environmental campaign turns Wilco concerts into more than a musical experience NEW YORK, NY – With the Presidential election approaching fast, the Chicago-based rock band Wilco has turned their concerts into a call for democratic participation by hosting the non-partisan voter registration organization HeadCount and Patagonia Inc.’s “Vote the Environment” campaign at nearly every U.S tour stop. On Wilco’s upcoming tour, which begins in Chicago on Sept. 15th and ends in Los Angeles on Sept. 30th, HeadCount and Patagonia will set up side-by-side booths at each concert. Anyone in attendance at these concerts will have the chance to register to vote. Anyone will also be able to remind their elected officials that environmental issues help determine how they vote. In support of these efforts, Wilco also donated an exclusive version of their song “Whole Love” – the title track from their Grammy-nominated album The Whole Love – with all proceeds from download of this song benefitting HeadCount and its nationwide voter registration campaign. (Track can be downloaded at: http://bit.ly/LH70bE). Patagonia also produced a special edition Wilco/Vote the Environment t-shirt, with a portion of proceeds benefitting HeadCount (T-shirts can be ordered at: http://bit.ly/KE0HdV). "Given the current state of American politics," notes Jeff Tweedy, Wilco’s lead singer, "it's easy to see why people become disillusioned and don't participate. But my hope, and my reason for this partnership, is to remind people that they do have a voice, and voting is an effective and undeniable way to be heard.

November 27, 2018 For Immediate Release JEFF TWEEDY SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR "I KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE" AND ANNOUNCES 2019 US TOUR CONCERT TO BE LIVE-STREAMED FROM CHICAGO ON DEC. 1ST WARM, FIRST SOLO ALBUM OF ORIGINAL MATERIAL, OUT THIS FRIDAY ON DBPM RECORDS (photo credit: Whitten Sabbatini) Jeff Tweedy's first solo album of entirely new original material, WARM, is out this Friday on dBpm Records. In advance of this occasion, Jeff has shared a new video for "I Know What It's Like," a new song off the album, and announced a solo US tour for early 2019. Tickets for the newly announced dates go on sale this Friday at 7PM local time. Tickets can be purchased at wilcoworld.net/shows. Additionally, Jeff (with band) will be performing songs from WARM via a live-stream this Saturday, Dec. 1st, at 8pm CST. The stream can be viewed and embedded via this YouTube link. WARM was produced and recorded entirely by Jeff at Chicago’s now legendary studio, The Loft (with help from some of his usual collaborators – Spencer Tweedy, Glenn Kotche and Tom Schick). Although not an official companion-piece to his newly released memoir, LET’S GO (SO WE CAN GET BACK): A Memoir of Recording and Discording with Wilco, Etc., the two works are inextricably linked by time (the two were created concurrently) and topic (some of the stories Jeff mined for his book appear in some form on the album, and the lyrics for many songs off the record close out his book).

  • Wilco Bio 2011
After a busy 2010, Wilco is already putting its mark on 2011. The Chicago rock band founded in the mid-’90s by singer, guitarist and songwriter Jeff Tweedy last year launched and headlined the inaugural Solid Sound Festival, while Tweedy produced and wrote two songs for the Grammy- winning release by soul legend Mavis Staples, You Are Not Alone, which won Best Americana Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in February. Staples joined Wilco, Avi Buffalo, Vetiver, the Baseball Project and more to perform at the first Solid Sound Festival, held Aug. 13-15, 2010, on the grounds of MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), a converted textile mill in North Adams, tucked away in the scenic Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts. Wilco has already announced the second incarnation of Solid Sound June 24-26. Along with a pair of headline performances by Wilco, this year’s version features the Levon Helm Band, Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore, New Zealand rocker Liam Finn, alt-country duo The Handsome Family and folk couple Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion. Also performing are soul singer Syl Johnson, jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas and Chicago retro-soul band JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, plus indie-rockers Here We Go Magic, Sic Alps, Purling Hiss and a rare live set by Pillow Wand, a collaboration between Moore and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline. Comedian John Hodgman hosts this year’s Comedy Cabaret, featuring Daily Show correspondent Wyatt Cenac and comics Eugene Mirman and Morgan Murphy. Tickets are available via solidsoundfestival.com. Also, Wilco this winter founded dBpm Records, headquartered in Easthampton, MA, to release future Wilco albums.

  • Book Reviews
Book Reviews Noble, Safiya Umoja. Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism. New York University Press, 2018. Safiya Umoja Noble’s Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism critiques the power of algorithms to consistently reproduce racial stereotypes within the digitized public sphere. The book has been regularly lauded by early reviewers within both the tech world and among scholars of the humanities. In her popular work, Noble skillfully weaves widely dissimilar fields into an accessible narrative that is clearly prescient in the wake of both the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the continued repercussions of GamerGate. Although often quite vague on solutions, Noble’s analysis offers an important interdisciplinary contribution that exposes structural racism within the digital realm through both personal anecdotes and important current events. Sometimes seeming an overly synthetic gilded lily, Noble’s work provides the public significant awareness about how racism is encoded within algorithms, an essential step in overcoming the continued implications of digital discrimination. Algorithms of Oppression applies discourse analysis of algorithms and scrutinizes the corporations that profit from a racialized internet. Following work by Helen Nissenbaum and Lucas Introna, Virginia Eubanks, and Cathy O’Neil, Noble argues that discrimination is embedded within the algorithms used by search engines that consistently profit from the reproduction of racist and sexist digital information. Due to a previous career in marketing, Noble keenly reads how racism specifically assists Google’s profiteering through Search and PageRank. Noble begins her analyses of algorithmic oppression through a consistently reiterated story about her searching the phrase “black girls” to find interesting topics to better connect with her stepdaughter and nieces.
