REINHARD This is my first issue as the new editor for this journal, so please grant me some leeway to address the question of why popular culture matters being highlighted in these pages, including with our first attempt at a multimedia, interactive component. Please indulge my brief time on the soap box to explain my perspective to hopefully clarify my approach as the Editor of this journal. I come to this—field? discipline? interest? passion?—from three separate perspectives: communication studies, fan studies, and psychology. I am fascinated with how people make sense of themselves, each other, and the world around them. Being a fan provides a particular slant to these sense-makings and can shape, and be shaped by, communication. I see all interactions with others as communicating because meaning is always exchanged. Sometimes that meaning is exchanged in a word; sometimes a picture; sometimes a cake; sometimes a slap. As a part of a person’s identity, fandom informs, is created through, and impacts others through communication. The context or situation in which the communication occurs also shapes these interactions. Time of day. Place. Participants. So many factors impact what we communicate, how, and why. Popular culture comes in through our fandoms and our situations. Popular culture is popular. It is for the public. The masses. For everyday working folk who perhaps could not afford the “finer” things of a society or culture but still find meaning and solidarity through so-called “low culture.” Popular culture helps people handle the drudgery of labor for the profit of others. Popular culture provides an education, a socialization to further people’s interactions and, perhaps, people’s status in life. Popular culture can reassure people that they are not alone, and it can challenge the status quo. Popular culture can unite, either in a narrow way around a specific

Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

Tom Green wrote, directed and stars in "Freddy Got Fingered," and his signature brand of comedy is slathered all over this mm. Green plays Gord Brody, a 28-year­ old slacker who finally leaves home (to his parents elation) to attempt to become a professional animator, only to return home disappointed. Instantly the antics begin in that strange unexplainable Tom Green way. Gord just docs weird (uncomfortably weird) stuff without much rhyme or reason. If you have never before seen, or wanted to sec, someone fondle animal genitalia (horse and elephant respectively), then you might be in for a shock, to say the least. The story line of Gord wanting to be a professional animator docs seem to make perfect sense. Gord is a child in a semi­ adult's body, and drawing cartoons fits the character perfectly. Gord goes to Los Angeles to try to sell his work by breaking into the office of an animation executive (Anthony Michael Hall). This scene is relatively funny as Gord confounds security with his "weirdness" (for lack of a better word) and manages to get to the office of the head honcho. Then of course, there is a lot of Green's usual bizarre physical comedy, which makes one wonder why the exec hasn't called security yet.

Some critics do not approve his writing style, and this is what differentiates him from other popular horror writers. S. King’s writing style is very specific and distinctive. The author uses many figures or measures that are not common to most modern writers and this is what makes him and his works so special. This article is focused on stylistic peculiarities of S. King’s writing style. As Teodoro Gómez wrote in his book about S. King, ‘King was manifoldly christened an American Dickens because of his style, plain and simple in receival’1 [translation mine]. This cannot be argued – his writing style goes down well with most of his readers, although some of the more demanding intellectuals disdain it. Obviously, in the literary community there is controversy on this topic. Some people notice that ‘it is very easy to be upset with horror writer Stephen King, for not only has he turned out his annual, successful terrifier, he has also produced a remarkable nonfiction work in which he discusses the meaning and the appeal of the horror story’2. This is not a popular technique among writers – to give away their secrets about how to write to achieve success. Nonetheless, this is just what S. King does. This is a reason of adoration from one side, but also a reason of animosity from the other.
