Zusammen mit ihrem Produzenten Scott Burns erschaffen sie damit im inzwischen legendären Morrisound Studio einen Meilenstein des Death Metal, an dem sich alle Nachfolger orientieren. By that I mean that both are Metal Mind DVDs, a lab that has gotten rather proficient at the live concert DVD game. Th centerpiece is the show itself, which is professionally filmed and recorde while the bonus material includes generally informative interviews wi the members and a video or two. With that little synopsis out of the wa we can dive right into the meat of the matter. Though soun quality never seems to be a problem on a Metal Mind release, th quality on "Frozen Alive" is especially good and better than th somewhat cavernous sound on GRAVE's "Enraptured". Playing whopping 23-song set, the quintet is on top of its game and clearly lovin every minute of it, which always makes the experience more enjoyab for the viewer. As tight as the rest of the members are though, it vocalist John Tardy that is a veritable monster! The guy is on! Stalkin the stage with a constant snarl on his face and that flowing mane of ha Tardy sounds great and delivers the goods song after song.

Rather, metal music's fascination with dystopian imagery is often critical in intent, borrowing themes and imagery from other literary and cinematic traditions in an effort to express a form of social commentary. The artists and musical works examined in this thesis maintain strong ties with the science fiction genre, in particular, and tum to science fiction conventions in order to examine the long-term implications of humanity's complex relationship with advanced technology. Situating metal's engagements with science fiction in relation to a broader practice of blending science fiction and popular music and to the technophobic tradition in writing and film, this thesis analyzes the works of two science fiction metal bands, VOlvod and Fear Factory, and provides close readings of four futuristic albums from the mid to late 1990s that address humanity's relationship with advanced technology in musical and visual imagery as well as lyrics. These recorded texts, described here as cyber metal for their preoccupation with technology in subject matter and in sound, represent prime examples of the critical dystopia in metal music.

Québec, Canada © Méi-Ra St-Laurent, 2013 Résumé Le metal extrême, tiré du heavy metal, demeure souvent pointé du doigt en raison de la musique et des sujets transgressifs le caractérisant et qui, a priori, ne communiquent qu‟une violence décousue. Or, ces dernières années, plusieurs musicologues se sont intéressés au potentiel de la narratologie pour l‟analyse de la musique populaire; la chanson est alors considérée comme un véritable récit, où les musiciens transmettent leur propre vision du monde. Dans ce mémoire, je propose donc une analyse musicologique et narratologique de quatre chansons dites transgressives tirées du metal extrême, soit « Mad Architect » (Septicflesh), « Her Ghost in the Fog » (Cradle of Filth), « When the Joyful Dead are Dancing » (Unexpect) et « Puritania » (Dimmu Borgir). Ces analyses permettront donc de mieux comprendre la structure narrative et musicale interne, ainsi que les différents codes esthétiques régissant ce répertoire. iii Summary Extreme metal, derived from heavy metal, remains often singled out because of the music and subjects viewed as transgressive and which, a priori, communicate a disjointed violence. However, in recent years, several musicologists have been interested in the potiential of narratology for the analysis of popular music; the song is then considered as a true narrative, where musicians communicate their own conception of the world.
