Arq Neuropsiquiatr 2006;64(4):1030-1032 FATAL INTRACEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE SECONDARY TO LONOMIA OBLIQUA CATERPILLAR ENVENOMING Case report Pedro André Kowacs1, Juliana Cardoso1, Marlene Entres2, Edison Mattos Novak1, Lineu César Werneck1 ABSTRACT - The case of a 70 year-old, previously healthy woman who developed a severe bleeding diathe- sis shortly after touching a Lonomia obliqua caterpillar and finally died from multiple intracerebral hem- o rrhages is described. Brain hemorrhages are the leading cause of death in patients envenomed by the Lonomia species. The pertinent literature is reviewed and the most relevant clinical features highlighted, with emphasis on diagnosis. The use of new therapeutic options such as anti-Lonomia serum is discussed. KEY WORDS: intracerebral hemorrhage, Lonomia obliqua, caterpillar envenoming. A literatura p e rtinente é revisada, sendo as características clínicas e laboratoriais mais relevantes discutidas com ênfase para o diagnóstico, e o uso de novas abordagens terapêuticas como o soro anti-Lonomia. Abstract: This study describes the results and collection practices for obtaining arthropod samples to be stud- ied as potential sources of new medicines in a bioprospecting effort. From 1994 to 1998, 1800 arthropod sam- ples of 6-10 g were collected in 21 sites of the Área de Conservación Guancaste (A.C.G) in Northwestern Costa Rica. The samples corresponded to 642 species distributed in 21 orders and 95 families. Most of the collections were obtained in the rainy season and in the tropical rainforest and dry forest of the ACG. Samples were obtained from a diversity of arthropod orders: 49.72% of the samples collected corresponded to Lepidoptera, 15.75% to Coleoptera, 13.33% to Hymenoptera, 11.43% to Orthoptera, 6.75% to Hemiptera, 3.20% to Homoptera and 7.89% to other groups. -

PLATES 62 AND 63. (Receivedfor publication, December22, 1921.) INTRODUCTION. A small larval moth has been causing dermatitis in southern Texas for the past decade, particularly during the years 1913 and 1920. It is known locally as the puss-caterpillar, opossum bug, Italian asp, and, by Mexicans, el perrito (the puppy), and belongs to the family Megalo- pygida~, of the group known as slug caterpillars. As it has not been investigated systematically from a medical standpoint up to the present time, the work reported in this paper was undertaken at the suggestion of Mr. F. C. Bishopp, of the United States Bureau of Entomology, who is stationed at Dallas, Texas, and to whom the writer is much indebted for the caterpillars studied and notes concerning their distribution and injurious effects. Mr. Bishopp reports the following clinical symptoms from regions infested by the caterpillars. All stages of the larva are capable of inflicting stings, the intensity of the lesions being in proportion to the size of the caterpillar. There is a marked variability in the susceptibility of different individuals. At some seasons there have been epidemics of dermatitis so widespread that public schools in San Antonio, Texas, were closed until the surrounding trees could be sprayed. The severity of the sting varies with its location and the thickness of the skin affected. There is at first a localized, painful area of erythema, which burns intensely. -
