FACULTY CONTRIBUTIONS Series VI, No. 1 February 1962

School of Graduate Studies Western Michigan University Kalamazoo, Michigan Foreword

Faculty Publications 1957-~ is the first major compilation of the

publications of the faculty of Western Michigan University. Compila-

tions like this one are not unique. Nearly all the major universities, as well as many of the smaller institutions of higher education, have

prepared them for a number of years. It seemed reasonable, when the

enterprise was first planned, for Western Michigan University to pub-

lish the compilation as one of the Faculty Contributions of the School

of Graduate Studies.

It is not the aim of this Contribution to provide data for compar-

ing the numerical output of the different faculty members. There is

no feasible way to weigh the quality of effort involved in, or scholar-

ly merit of, one bibliographical entry against that of another. Rather,

it is designed to inform all faculty members about the types of publi-

cations produced by the staff of Western Michigan University. An exam-

ination of the material that follows indicates that they are substantial

in number and variety.

Every effort was made to poll every faculty member for his publica-

tions and to make complete and correct bibliographical citations . As

with every bibliography, there are no doubt omissions and errors. The

writer assumes full responsibility for them. Nevertheless, even with

such transgressions, it is hoped that this Faculty Contribution will be

enlightening and useful.

George G. Mallinson, Dean School of Graduate Studies Bibliographical Listings

In general, the faculty publications are presented alphabetically by department. Where feasible, the entries for each faculty member are entered chronologically. Deviations exist where other modes of order seemed more appropriate.

A summary of the publications indicated the following:

Number of contributors 159

Number of contributions 616

Number of books among contributions 48

Articles in periodicals 457

Contributions to bulletins and monographs 111

It is salutary to note, also, that four faculty members are

editors of journals that have national distribution. These are:

1. Dr. John Feirer, Industrial Arts and Vocational Education

2. Dr. Jean Lowrie, School Libraries

3. Dr. Ken }lacrorie, College Composition .!!!.!! Colll!lunication

4. Dr. George G. Mallinson, School Science and Mathematics FACULTY PUBLICATIONS 1957-1961
