The list, comprising 624 species in the families Lasiocampidae, Endromidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Notodontidae, Noctuidae, Pantheidae, Lymantriidae, Nolidae and Arctiidae from the Southern Ural Mountains is presented. The material was collected during 1996–2001 in 10 different expeditions. Dichagyris lux Fibiger & K. Nupponen sp. n. is described. 17 species are reported for the first time from Europe: Clostera albosigma (Fitch, 1855), Xylomoia retinax Mikkola, 1998, Ecbolemia misella (Püngeler, 1907), Pseudohadena stenoptera Boursin, 1970, Hadula nupponenorum Hacker & Fibiger, 2002, Saragossa uralica Hacker & Fibiger, 2002, Conisania arida (Lederer, 1855), Polia malchani (Draudt, 1934), Polia vespertilio (Draudt, 1934), Polia altaica (Lederer, 1853), Mythimna opaca (Staudinger, 1899), Chersotis stridula (Hampson, 1903), Xestia wockei (Möschler, 1862), Euxoa dsheiron Brandt, 1938, Agrotis murinoides Poole, 1989, Agrotis sp. -

A wide range of nectar sources had persisted until mid- summer, and when the sun came out at least, attracted large numbers and a rich diversity of butterflies. We explored from the lowlands to the high mountains, in weather that varied from warm and humid, to very hot and dry, albeit with persistent northerly winds on the last couple of days. In total the week produced 113 species of butterfly, together with many dazzling day-flying moths (particularly burnets) and other wonderful bugs and beasties. And almost nightly moth trapping gave us a window into the night-life, albeit dominated by Pine Processionaries, but with a good sample of the big, beautiful and bizarre. Add in to the mix the stunning scenery, a good range of mountain birds, a few mammals and reptiles, and wonderful food, drink and accommodation at Casa Sarasa: the perfect recipe for an outstanding holiday! Day 1 Wednesday 6th July We arrived at Zaragoza Airport, met Peter, and boarded the minibuses to be taken to Casa Sarasa in Berdún; it was sunny and hot, but there were still a few interesting birds to be seen en route, including White Stork, Booted Eagle, and Red and Black Kites. -

Península Ibérica), recopilando los datos bibliográficos existentes (sólo para dos especies), a los que se añaden otros nuevos como resultado del trabajo de campo del autor, alcanzando un total de 23 especies. An updated and annotated list of the prominent moths (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) known to occur in O Courel (Lugo, Galicia, Spain, NW Iberian Peninsula) is made, compiling the existing bibliographic records (only for two species) and reaching up to 23 species after adding new ones as a result of the fieldwork undertaken by the author. Aposematism and Mimicry in Caterpillars

BERENBAUM Department of Entomology, University of Illinois, Urbana, llinois 61801, USA ABSTRACT. In the Lepidoptera, described instances of larval mimicry are vastly and curiously fewer in number than those tabulated for adults. This disparity may arise in large part from a lack of pertinent research, rather than actual differences between the two life stages. The evolution of larval coloration and its role in the development of possible larval mimicry complexes represents largely unbroken and fertile ground for study. Aposematic coloration is a conspicuous characteristic of many larval lepidopterans-so conspicuous, in fact, that Darwin (1871:326) was prompted to remark: " ... distastefulness alone would be insufficient to protect a caterpillar unless some outward sign indicated to its would-be destroyer that its prey was a disgusting morsel. ... Under these circumstances it would be highly advantageous to a caterpillar to be instantaneously and certainly recognized as unpalatable by all birds and other animals. Thus the most gaudy colors would be serviceable and might have been gained by variation and the survival of the most easily-recognized individual." Conspicuous in their absence, however, are the mimicry complexes that are associated so frequently with aposematic adult Lepidoptera. Virtually all of mimicry theory as it relates to Lepidoptera revolves around discussions of wing patterns in adults and has done so for over a hundred years (Remington 1963). This bizarre apparent asymmetry in the frequency of mimetic resemblance in larval versus adult stages has been remarked upon, but not satisfactorily accounted for, by several authors (e.g., Sillen-Tullberg 1988, Turner 1984). -

Spring has been and gone and, on the Highveld at least, we’ve had a better season than we’ve had for several years. There haven’t been any remarkable records, but off hand, I can’t think of any “missing” spring butterflies. Unfortunately, with persistently hot, dry weather, things are tailing off a bit now. A final reminder that our annual Conference starts on Saturday 16 Oct; the venue is the Knysna Hollow Conference Centre, Webedacht Road, Knysna. Registration starts at 7h30. I’ve attached a link to the conference program below: 2019 LepSoc Africa Annual Conference Further phosphor frolics (Mark Liptrot) Mark Liptrot recently found the Southern Forest Opal (Chrysoritis phosphor phosphor) at Hogsback. As far as I’m aware, these are the first photographs ever taken of this taxon in the wild It was a sheer fluke that I was in the right place at the right time to see this one. We’d just arrived in Hogsback at the Air B&B Bramber Cottage at mid-afternoon on 4th October, and settled down to have coffee at the outside table. I noticed a lot of insect activity on the adjacent Mexican Orange (Choisya ternata), an exotic aromatic shrub. This attracted plenty of honey bees and a Bradypodion ventrale, the eastern Cape dwarf chameleon (see photo). My wife Cecily and I were lamenting the fact that the Hogsback gardens were full of exotics (Azaleas in particular), and that the Chrysoritis phosphor phosphor (Mark Liptrot) surrounding plantations (mainly pine and wattle) were infesting the gardens and the Afromontane forests. -

Although such faunistic studies were conducted extensively in the region during the first decade of the early 20th century, there are a few new taxa, taxonomic revisions, misidentifications, and misspellings, which should be documented. We examined 1,276 species in 652 genera, 59 subfamilies, and 15 families. We propose 4 new combinations, namely Arichanna refracta Inoue, 1978 stat. nov.; Psyra matsumurai Bastelberger, 1909 stat. nov.; Olene baibarana (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.; and Cerynia usuguronis (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.. The noctuid Blepharita alpestris Chang, 1991 is regarded as a junior synonym of Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758) (syn. nov.). The geometrids Palaseomystis falcataria (Moore, 1867 [1868]), Venusia megaspilata (Warren, 1895), and Gandaritis whitelyi (Butler, 1878) and the erebid Ericeia elongata Prout, 1929 are newly recorded in the fauna of Taiwan. -

This work contains faunistic data on the occurrence of 677 butterfly and moth species found during 2000-2008 in north-eastern Poland (Podlasie Province). The species Monopis fenestratella (HEYDEN, 1863), Amphisbatis elsae SVENSSON, 1982, Coleophora ptarmicia WALSINGHAM, 1910 and Epermenia falciformis (HAWORTH, 1828) were found in Poland for the first time. Recent data are provided for five other species – Monochroa servella (ZELLER, 1839), Teleiodes aenigma SATTLER, 1983, Dichomeris limosella (SCHLÄGER, 1849), Aethes rutilana (HÜBNER, 1817) and Eana derivana (LA HARPE, 1858) – known in Poland only from historical data. The occurrence in Podlasie of 75 species is reported for the first time, and the occurrence of 6 other species is confirmed for this area after more than 50 years. This work also describes a new species, Monopis bisonella ŠUMPICH, sp. n. A number of species are very rare in Poland and occur only locally. -
