Dornum , Verwaltungssitz der gleichnamigen Samtgemeinde, Landkreis Aurich 1. Lage und Siedlungsform Das Warfendorf wurde auf Gley-Podsol-Boden in einer Höhe von sechs Meter über Meeresniveau (NN) gegründet und ist im Norden, Osten und Westen umgeben von Kalkmarsch. Im Süden grenzt ein Gebiet mit Kleimarsch an. Die ursprüngliche Haufen- und mittlerweile auch Streusiedlung befindet sich nahe der Nordseeküste etwa zwölf Kilometer westlich von Esens und knapp sieben Kilometer nördlich von Westerholt. 2. Vor- und Frühgeschichte 3. Ortsname Dornum ist Verwaltungssitz der gleichnamigen Samtgemeinde und war im Mittelalter Häuptlingssitz mit heute noch erhaltenen Burganlagen. Die Kirche stammt aus der Zeit um 1270- 1280. Dornum ist der Geburtsort des Dichters Enno Hektor, der besonders durch sein „Ostfrieslandlied“ (in Ostfreesland is ’t am besten …) bekannt wurde. Erste urkundliche Erwähnung fand der Ort als „to Dornen“ im Jahr 1400. Weitere Bezeichnungen waren „to Dornym“ (auch 1400), „Dornum“ (1420) und „in Thornum“ (1435). Es handelt sich hier um Zusammensetzung mit dem Rufnamen Dore , also eigentlich ‚ Doren-Heim ’. 4. Geschichtlicher Überblick a. Entwicklung der Gemeinde bis zur Weimarer Republik b. Veränderungen in der NS-Zeit In Dornum befand sich am südlichen Ortsausgang an der Bahnhofsstraße das Kriegsgefangenenlager AK Wi 2/1016e bzw. AK Dornum 1016E. Es befand sich in der Scheune des Hotels „Hof von Ostfriesland“, wo heute die Raiffeisengenossenschaft zu finden ist. Es waren hier maximal 46 Insassen mit wechselnden Nationalitäten verzeichnet. U. a. lebten hier 11 Deutsche, 39 Polen (1939), 5 Serben (1941) und auch Franzosen. Später waren dann 46 (100%) Russen untergebracht. c. Entwicklung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg 1946 wurden hier insgesamt 1255 Einwohner verzeichnet, wovon 301 Personen Flüchtlinge waren, was einem Anteil von 24% entspricht. -

COHN – P 325 Xeroxed registers of birth, marriage and death Marion Rene Cohn was born in 1925 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and raised in Germany and Romania until she immigrated to Israel (then Palestine) in 1940 and since then resided in Tel Aviv. She was among the very few women who have served with Royal British Air Forces and then the Israeli newly established Air Forces. For many years she was the editor of the Hasade magazine until she retired at the age of 60. Since then and for more than 30 years she has dedicated her life to the research of German Jews covering a period of three centuries, hundreds of locations, thousands of family trees and tens of thousands of individuals. Such endeavor wouldn’t have been able without the generous assistance of the many Registors (Standesbeamte), Mayors (Bürgermeister) and various kind people from throughout Germany. Per her request the entire collection and research was donated to the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem and the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt am Main. She passed away in 2015 and has left behind her one daughter, Maya, 4 grandchildren and a growing number of great grandchildren. 1 P 325 – Cohn This life-time collection is in memory of Marion Cohn's parents Consul Erich Mokrauer and Hetty nee Rosenblatt from Frankfurt am Main and dedicated to her daughter Maya Dick. Ostfriesen Genealogical Society of America OGSA PO Box 50919 Mendota, MN 55150 651-269-3580 www.ogsa.us Ostfriesen Church Records and Translated Prefaces Church records are a key source of genealogical information for our Ostfriesen ancestors. Churches recorded the births, marriages and deaths in their communities for generations, even if the person was not a member of the Church’s denomination. Information that was recorded varied prior to the implementation of standards in the early 1800s. You see baptism dates rather than birth dates, burial dates instead of death dates, and the parents of couples being married may not have been recorded. Many volunteers have compiled family books from church records for the Upstalsboom-Gesellschaft, the Ostfriesland genealogical society in Aurich, Germany. These books follow the standards of the Upstalsboom- Gesellschaft and are called an Ortssippenbuch or an OSB. Some researchers will independently compile a family book from a community’s church records and publish them privately. These books are called an Ortsfamienbuch or an OFB. Both OSBs and OFBs require extensive efforts to complete and the books are often in process for years. OSBs and OFBs were traditionally printed once and were difficult to obtain after they sold out, however some are now reprinted after an adequate number of orders have been received. The OGSA attempts to maintain copies of each book in its research collection located in the Minnesota Genealogical Society library and the collection is available at our conferences that are held every two years.
