Our Tocqueville Society is United Way’s most generous and community-minded Giving Society. Tocqueville members represent those who are fully committed to investing in the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors by providing them with the best health and human services in time of desperate need. At the forefront of their minds is the need for permanent, real-life solutions to our community’s most challenging problems.

Members generously contribute $10,000 or more annually to United Way. Contributions such as theirs make a lasting impact in the community, ultimately changing lives for the better, and for that, we could not be more thankful.

Alexis de Tocqueville, for whom the society is named after, famously documented the American public’s unique willingness to work for the public welfare – a tendency to lend faithful support to neighbors and countrymen, especially in times of need.

Sean Trauschke, Debby Hampton, Carl Edwards United Way of Central Oklahoma’s 17th annual Oklahoma Snowflake Gala was held on Jan. 25, 2019. This event allows us to celebrate our loyal supporters and announce campaign fundraising totals. The 2018 campaign raised more than $17 million thanks to the generosity of more than 30,000 donors. We are grateful for the strong leadership of Sean Trauschke, campaign chair, and Carl Edwards, board chair, along with the tireless efforts of the campaign cabinet and board of directors.

VOLUNTEER HONOREES Prior to the gala, a volunteer awards reception took place honoring four outstanding volunteers. Doug Stussi was awarded our highest honor, the Richard H. Clements Debby Hampton, Chris Reen, Doug Stussi, Lifetime Achievement Award. Tricia Everest was given the Tricia Everest, Danny Barth, Carl Edwards John and Berta Fay Rex Community Builder Award. The Oklahoma City Thunder also received the John and Berta Fay Rex Community Builder Award. Chris Reen received the Ray Ackerman Leadership Award.

A loyal contributor to United Way for more than five decades, Jeanne’s generous spirit is something that has been with her almost her entire life. It’s something she inherited from her father, who she says made a living out of giving.

As an employee of the Union National Bank, in Chandler, Jeanne says her dad was famous for his generosity. “People remembered him always, because he was always loaning money, even without collateral…” Jeanne reminisced. “He did this all throughout the depression.”

The next generation of United Way leadership donors make up the Emerging Leaders affinity group. This group not only contributes $500 or more annually, but also gives back to the community through volunteering and enthusiastic leadership.

Members participate in various community volunteer activities throughout the year, including an egg hunt for inner-city children and their families, and a meaningful holiday dance for senior citizens. Emerging Leaders enjoy networking with peers through events such as the casino-themed event Raising the Stakes, and learning valuable skills and lessons from respected community leaders.

Through our Lunches with Leaders series, members heard from established business leaders Martha Burger with Oklahoma City University, Steve Dixon from Tapstone Energy, and Roy Williams with Greater OKC Chamber of Commerce. Emerging Leaders also had the opportunity to connect with United Way Partner Agency representatives and directors throughout the year.

The United Way of Central Oklahoma’s Women’s Leadership Society unites women – their time, talents and resources – into a powerful network of individuals devoted to enhancing and strengthening the community through intergenerational opportunities. With an annual donation of $2,500 or more, these community-minded women leverage the collective power of women supporting the United Way.

The Women’s Leadership Society provides a number of educational opportunities to hear from renowned speakers and researchers on current topics relevant to central Oklahoma. In addition, the group hosts events throughout the year to better the community through the collaboration of networking and philanthropy.

A dedicated group of female philanthropists, Women’s Leadership Society’s focus is developing new leadership for the community through encouragement of intergenerational interaction and mentoring, educational opportunities and a shared vision of community engagement.
