I owe an unpayable debt to my chair, Dr. Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez, who helped deepen my project and its contributions to Thai American Studies. Throughout my tenure as a PhD student, Professor Gonzalez was tough mentor, pushing me to think about the importance of my project. “Bangkok is Burning” would not be possible without her guidance. In addition to her mentorship and help, she has been a friend, understanding that I, as a queer student of color and the child of immigrants, continually had pressing obligations outside of the academe. For her compassion, generosity, and much more, I am forever obliged. I am also indebted for the backing, intellectual growth, and friendship that my entire committee gave me throughout this process. In addition to Vernadette Gonzalez, my committee of Joyce Mariano, Elizabeth Colwill, Cristina Bacchilega, and Mariam Lam, helped cultivate my ideas, guiding me, in different ways, through the doctoral process.

  • A Study of Historical Overview and Current Situation of Thailand Film Tourism
A Study of Historical Overview and Current Situation of Thailand Film Tourism Thapthep Paprach, Silpakorn University, Thailand Rohani Hashim, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia The Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities 2018 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This research aims to investigate the historical overview and current situation of Thai film tourism, based on texts and documents research. Research offers the categorization by original stakeholder’s producing, in which, consists of Western film production, Bollywood production, China film production and Thai local film production. Tourism discipline primarily focused on the numbers of people visiting the places featured in movies and Hollywood has played an important role. The nail-shaped island popularized by The Man with The Golden Gun, classic films such as The Deer Hunter, The Killing Fields, box office hit The Hangover Part II and The beach, the country has proven itself as a favorite location for international filmmakers. In recent years, Indian filmmakers have introduced Thailand’s destinations on their films, Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya emerges as hubs for filming Bollywood movies. And the last evidence is Lost in Thailand which causes Chinese want to experience Thailand more, especially Chiang Mai. Meanwhile, Thai local cinemas could meet success in international market, for example, Ong Bark, Shutter, Pee Mak and the latest hit in China Bad Genius, all could not do their best in promoting the filming location, but these films act in the form of cultural tourism and become the source of information on certain aspects of the country such as nature, culture and people which result in the construction of the attitudes towards the country, contributing factor to making a decision to actually visit the country rather than to follow filming locations.

Mario's marvellous medicine by Gary Boyle Photo courtesy of Melalin Mahavongtrakul Read the following story by Suwitcha Chaiyong from the Bangkok Post. Then, answer the questions that follow. Heart-throb Mario Maurer returns in hit show about old-style Thai doctors. FRESH AND NEW Traditional Thai medicine is thought by many to be old and outdated. But when Channel 3 decided to use it in the recent period romcom, Doctor Thongek of Ta Chalong, it sparked interest among viewers. The fresh and unusual storyline drew in both young and old viewers. They were also tuning in because of Thai-German heart-throb Mario Maurer in the lead role. Mario agreed to play Thongek in part because the script contained interesting elements about Thai traditional treatments. "I discussed the show with the director [Chudapha Chantakate] a long time ago. I wanted to play the character because the script was interesting. It was new and challenging, different from anything I had done before," Mario said. Doctor Thongek of Ta Chalong tells the story of Thongek, a young man from a family of traditional doctors during the reign of King Rama V. His parents both die during an epidemic and Thongek is then raised by his grandfather. TRIAL BY FIRE Mario admitted that he found the role challenging.

  • MUSIC CD in DEVELOPMENT and CONSUMER VALUE in the THAI MUSIC INDUSTRY by PHUNPITI BHOVICHITRA a Thesis Submitted for the Degree
MUSIC CD IN DEVELOPMENT AND CONSUMER VALUE IN THE THAI MUSIC INDUSTRY BY PHUNPITI BHOVICHITRA A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy to The Faculty of Management, University of Stirling, Scotland August, 2017 1 2 ABSTRACT While the digital market, especially the music streaming market, has rapidly grown in recent years, however the physical music segment still remains relevant in the Thai market. The Thai music market has inimitable characteristics within the market in terms of the physical music record offers, recorded musical works, and a growth trend in physical sales. Moreover, the behaviour in physical music consumption is opposite to that in world markets. Music consumption practices in the Thai market and why physical music, and CDs in particular, remain relevant to the Thai music industry are an enigma. The music industry itself has suggested that the physical music market needs to be revamped and its physical products redeveloped. In addition, the major record companies have also refocused into developing physical markets. However, precisely how this is to be achieved has not been specified. The twin aims of this study are to more fully comprehend Thai music consumption practices in today’s market and to examine how the concepts of product development could be effective in responding to consumer needs and desires. Consumer-led product development is the main concept of this study used to create ideas to enhance music CDs. This study combined many perspectives related to consumer-led product development and then applied them to construct the conceptual framework named “The Seminal Framework for CD Development”.
