Rao © 2015 Adriana Nicole Cerami ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Adriana Nicole Cerami: Mafia Motifs in Andrea Camilleri’s Detective Montalbano Novels: From the Culture and Breakdown of Omertà to Mafia as a Scapegoat for the Failure of State (Under the direction of Ennio I. Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction.

    NAVAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE MAFIA IN WORLD WAR II By Rear Admiral Tom Brooks, USN (ret) (Author's note: Organized crime along the New York City waterfront during the 1940s and 1950s was usually referred to as "the mob", or "the underworld". The term "Mafia" did not come into general use until a decade or more later. Because "Mafia" is the commonly-used term today, it is used throughout this article. During World War II, many people would not even have known what the term meant). Before launching into the fascinating story of Naval Intelligence and the Mafia, it is necessary to understand a little of how Naval Intelligence was organized and operated prior to and during World War Two (WWII). The attack on Pearl Harbor and Germany's declaration of war found Naval Intelligence scrambling to put in place the infrastructure required to support the war effort. Within the continental United States, the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) was charged with security of ports and naval installations against sabotage, intelligence collection and counterintelligence, security and background investigations, as well as censorship (later moved to a separate organization). These responsibilities were assigned to the District Intelligence Offices (DIOs) of the Naval Districts, where they were executed by the District Intelligence Officers, who reported to the District Commandants as well as to ONI. Fortuitously, ONI had seen that war was coming and, in the mid thirties, began in earnest to build up a corps of reserve officers known as the Naval Intelligence Volunteer Service. Designated Intelligence Volunteer (Specialist), these officers were recruited from the ranks of lawyers, newspapermen, investigators, shipping industry executives, linguists, and other fields which might prove necessary to the Navy in time of war.

The charges are set forth below: You are charged with: Charge 1 Violating Article II, § 2(a) of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Constitution by conducting yourself in a manner to bring reproach upon the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, TO WIT, while being a paid business agent and officer of Local 918, from 1975 to the present, you have knowingly associated with members and associates of La Cosa Nostra, including John Gotti, Gene Gotti, Carmine Lombardozzi, Daniel Marino and Anthony Vinciullo. While a union officer, you have frequented locations you knew to be notorious as places where the business of La Cosa Nostra is conducted, including the Ravenite Social Club on Mulberry Street, New York, New York. Charge 2 Violating Article II, § 2(a) of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Constitution by conducting yourself in a manner to bring reproach upon the International Brotherhood of Teamsters: TO WIT, on or about September 29, 1975, you gave false testimony while under oath before a grand jury in Kings County, New York. This conduct was the basis of your conviction for three counts of First Degree Perjury, after a jury trial in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Kings County, on or about March 16, 1977. As a result of your conviction, you were sentenced to a one- year term of imprisonment.

Ron Blaisdell, PM January 28, 2001 AL 6001 FOREWORD (1949) "The Old Tiler first appeared in print in August, 1921 when the first of four hundred and fourteen "Old Tiler Talks" were printed in the Fellowship Forum, a fraternal newspaper published in Washington, D.C. In 1925 the publisher asked the author to select a few of the best of the talks and thirty-one were accordingly made into a little volume, copyrighted that year. The book, which sold for a dollar, ran into two editions of five thousand copies each. By the time they were all sold the Fellowship Forum ran head on into the depression and disappeared and with it the Old Tiler. His homely philosophy, sharp tongue and common sense, however, had made a place for him in the hearts of readers; demand for the book has never ceased, although it has lessened in the twenty-four years since the Old Tiler first spoke from between the covers. At long last the Old Tiler sits again before the door of his lodge, there to repeat the tales which made him liked so long ago, and, from the wealth of material of his hundreds of homilies, make thirty-nine new talks to the book, a total of seventy in all. These have been roughly classified under seven headings. To offer in defense of his fanciful classification the author has no other alibi than the weak statement that the Old Tiler is himself fancy!     Review Article Clinics in Surgery Published: 07 Jan, 2019 How A Failed Assassination Attempt on Franklin Delano Roosevelt Ended in the Death of Anton Cermak, Mayor of Chicago Theodore N Pappas* Department of Surgery, Duke University, Durham NC, North Carolina, USA Abstract On February 15 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was returning from a Florida fishing trip and passed through the Biscayne Park area of Miami to give a brief speech. The mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak, was in Florida on vacation and planned to meet the president-elect just after the speech. Moments after Cermak and Roosevelt shook hands, several shots were fired. A 32-year-old bricklayer, Giuseppe Zangara, was attempting to assassinate Roosevelt but missed and hit Cermak and four other bystanders. Cermak was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died 19 days later. This manuscript reviews the health care provided to the mayor during those 19 days. Although the cause of death has been contested, Anton Cermak probably recovered from his gunshot wounds but died of complicated ulcerative colitis. Introduction On February 15 1933, president-elect, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), was returning from a fishing trip off Miami. He and his security detail were passing through the Biscayne Park area of Miami for an announced stop where he was to give a brief speech. At the same time the Mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak, was on vacation in Florida and wanted to meet with the president-elect. He contacted Roosevelt’s team and was instructed to wait at the grandstand area of the Bay front Park where the president-elect would be able to meet with the mayor.

White, The Making of the President, 19681 Richard Nixon, like millions of other Americans, enjoyed Florida and the nearby islands of Cuba and the Bahamas as refuges where he could leave behind his many cares and inhibitions. But he also returned again and again to the region as an important ongoing source of political and financial support. In the process, the lax ethics of its shadier operators left its mark on his career. This Sunbelt frontier had long attracted more than its share of sleazy businessmen, promoters, and politicians who shared a get-rich-quick spirit. In Florida, hustlers made quick fortunes selling worthless land to gullible northerners and fleecing vacationers at illegal but wide-open gambling joints. Sheriffs and governors protected bookmakers and casino operators in return for campaign contributions and bribes. In nearby island nations, as described in chapter 4, dictators forged alliances with US mobsters to create havens for offshore gambling and to wield political influence in Washington. Nixon’s Caribbean milieu had roots in the mobster-infested Florida of the 1940s. He was introduced to that circle through banker and real estate investor Bebe Rebozo, lawyer Richard Danner, and Rep. George Smathers. Later this chapter will explore some of the diverse connections of this group by following the activities of Danner during the 1968 presidential campaign, as they touched on Nixon’s financial and political ties to Howard Hughes, the South Florida crime organization of Santo Trafficante, and mobbed-up hotels and casinos in Las Vegas and Miami.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION A Soldier at Heart: The Life of Smedley Butler, 1881 - 1940 by Eric Dennis Myers Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Joan Waugh, Chair The dissertation is a historical biography of Smedley Darlington Butler (1881-1940), a decorated soldier and critic of war profiteering during the 1930s. A two-time Congressional Medal of Honor winner and son of a powerful congressman, Butler was one of the most prominent military figures of his era. He witnessed firsthand the American expansionism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, participating in all of the major conflicts and most of the minor ones. Following his retirement in 1931, Butler became an outspoken critic of American intervention, arguing in speeches and writings against war profiteering and the injustices of expansionism. His critiques represented a wide swath of public opinion at the time – the majority of Americans supported anti-interventionist policies through 1939. Yet unlike other members of the movement, Butler based his theories not on abstract principles, but on experiences culled from decades of soldiering: the terrors and wasted resources of the battlefield, !
