FORALL 2017-2018 FISCAL YEAR REPORT Dear Friends ACCESS FORALL 2017-2018 FISCAL YEAR REPORT Dear Friends, As the new calendar year begins, we would like to take a moment to reflect on all that was accomplished in the last fiscal year now that all our counting and accounting has been completed. It’s most important to note at the outset that our growing outreach and impact simply wouldn’t be possible without your generous volunteer and financial support. So let’s take a look at what we were able to accomplish together. One unique thing about Disability Advocates of Kent County is that we are able to serve everyone we can regardless of disability type, age, race, gender, and or any other demographic category. As a result, our programs cover a wide range of services, from Family Support Services to Systems Change Advocacy. This year we’re taking a closer look at the part of our mission that focuses on access to home. Let’s reflect together on how we’ve successfully created more independence homes in our community this past year. This year, our Information & Referral team took in 5,833 calls, up 32% from last year. These callers were directed to one of our numerous programs if applicable, or provided with the appropriate information and connections to help them elsewhere. Many of these programs are focused on making the home as accessible as possible. 1 | Disability Advocates of Kent County An important part of living independently is learning the skills required to do so. Independent Living Supports offers tools to those who need them. Dozens of consumers benefited from services like benefits navigation and soft skills training this year, which allows them to keep their home and take care of themselves. Lastly, we look at our continually expanding Occupational Therapy program, which provided 278 home assessments last fiscal year alone. As one of our most direct in home services, it follows through the process of assessing the problem, creating a plan, and implementing the solution. We were able to assist 227 individuals and families with housing, home modifications, and shelter services this year. Each of these services are provided with the help of community partners, donors, volunteers, and others who believe in our mission with us. We thank you for your continued support in these efforts, and we can’t wait for how much we will grow in the year to come. Such was the case for Terry Rozanski, who worked with our Occupational Therapy program last year. Terry uses a power chair, but the four stairs leading up to his mobile home’s front door became a barrier restricting him from using it away from home. “I had to crawl up and down the stairs to get into my house,” he recalled, “and in the wintertime it was terrible.” We often focus on the practicality of accommodations, but it’s important also to realize what a difference it can make to an individual’s mental health and quality of life. Now, he says, “I can come or go as I please, anytime I want, day or night, without having to call anyone.” Terry contacted a few places with a goal to get a ramp built. “I was referred to Disability Advocates,” he says, “[and] they referred me to Home Repair Services. Within two weeks of the application they were building my ramp.” When Terry’s need came to us, we knew exactly how to get him the help he needed as fast as possible. Judy Morris, our OT Program Manager, expressed, “all of us just really enjoy what we do and the fact that we can make a difference for someone...really struggling with a problem we know can be solved.” In addition to the ramp, our extensive and evidence-based home assessment revealed that more could be done to make his home more accessible. We provided a shower chair, foam inserts for silverware, and other pieces of adaptive equipment that suited his needs. Terry commented, “it’s just the little things, too, that make a big difference.” We were able to provide these items that the assessment recommended in order to help him be more independent. Our mission is not only to give people tools to reach their goals, but to make sure that the tools we supply work over the long term. “They call and check on me every couple months, ask me if I need anything, or how I’m doing,” Terry explained. Working with us allowed Terry to live independently when he was losing hope of his ability to do so. “Without Disability Advocates and a couple organizations, I wouldn’t be here. I’d be in a home. And I didn’t sign up for that,” he said. We’re all about finding solutions, and we are so glad to have had the opportunity to work with Terry to find his. 5 | Disability Advocates of Kent County I can come or go as I please, anytime I want, day or night, without having to call anyone. – Terry Rozanski FINANCIALS REVENUE EXPENSES Fee for Service Personnel & & Miscellaneous $1,163,694 Contractual Expense $1,734,755 Foundation & Equipment & Goods Corporate Support $733,115 for Consumers $253,657 Government Grant Occupancy & Support Operations $192,861 (Federal, State, Local) $486,705 In-Kind Gifts $86,260 Individual Support $64,602 Supplies $30,325 In-Kind Gifts $86,260 Fundraising Events $29,503 and Marketing TOTAL REVENUE $2,534,376 Travel $45,583 TOTAL EXPENSES $2,372,944 7 | Disability Advocates of Kent County Assets Current Assets Cash & Cash Equivalents $678,477 Pledges & Accounts Receivable $700,662 Pre-paid Expense $35,047 Total Current Assets $1,414,186 Other Assets Office Lease Deposit $1,889 Total Other Assets $1,889 TOTAL ASSETS $1,416,075 Liabilities & NET Assets Current Liabilities Accounts Payable $16,646 Accrued Compensation & Withholdings $90,917 Deferred Revenue $58,925 Total Current Liabilities $166,488 Net Assets Unrestricted $603,477 Temp Restricted $634,805 Perm Restricted $11,305 Total Net Assets $1,249,587 LIABILITIES & NET ASSETS $1,416,075 Net Assets Beginning of the Year $1,088,155 Net Assets End of the Year $1,249,587 Total Change in Net Assets $161,432 Revenue Temporarily Restricted for Future Years $(294,164) TOTAL OPERATING CHANGE IN NET ASSETS $(132,732) 2018 Annual Report | 8 DONORS Thank you for the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and grantors. $100,001 – $250,000 Kate Pew Wolters $50,001 – $100,000 Edward N. & Della L. St. Petersburg, Florida 2017 Proceedings Motown Style and the American Dream Monica Sklar, PhD and Oloni Binns University of Georgia, USA Keywords: music, costume, Motown, 1960s The challenges of the dress styles of the record label Motown were a symbol of the shifting American Dream of the 1960s. This research evaluates two aspects of the dress history of Motown: the garments’ design and their social context. During Motown’s beginnings in the early 1960’s the glamorous image portrayed by its artists was deemed socially progressive by highlighting African American’s inclusion into American upper echelon status. Yet as the decade evolved Motown’s dress became out of step with the prevailing styles of social movements. The American dream was expanding to focus on civil rights, war, and the environment, thus Motown’s wigs, matching velvet suits, and sequined dresses were contrasting the messaging of the new styles of the era. This research documents the design development process including how the clothing was selected, produced, and where existing pieces are archived. The image making transitioned from do-it-yourself creations to a highly manipulated process of wardrobe stylists, finishing schools, and designer labels. Costumes were homemade such as men’s pants split open to make a matching women’s outfit for the Miracles, and evolved to the use of hip pads and wigs to create an ideal female form (Posner, 2005). By the time Motown reached its prime success, musical acts like the Supremes received an open clothing budget and department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue were shut down for their shopping sprees.

Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.
