Wednesday 10th January 2.00pm Baby & Toddler Group Meets in St. Thomas’s chapel in the Cathedral for a short 10 minute service, designed to appeal to children and adults alike. Following this we head over to Becket Hall where the children can play with a wide range of toys and games in a safe space while the adults can enjoy a tea, coffee, biscuit and chat. Proceeds in aid of The Roberts Centre. Saturday 20th January 9.00am to 7.00pm Annual Theme Launch Join us for the launch our new Annual Theme – ‘TIME. It takes 800 years to travel from one end of the Cathedral to the other, but other natural elements travel through time as well. Join us for a unique exploration of time and space featuring projections and other natural elements to evoke the passage and marking of time, and using the entire Cathedral as a map for our journey. Programme of events available in the Cathedral and online. 10.00am Peal A peal is the 'gold standard' change ringing performance during which the bells are rung continuously in over 5000 different sequences, without visual aids. Tuesday 23rd January 7.00pm Doctor Who - Adventures in Time and Faith: William Hartnell Upstairs at The Dolphin - 41 High St, Portsmouth, PO1 2LU. Monthly, we explore each incarnation of the Doctor alongside some of the big issues and themes which are covered in various episodes. Each session involves watching an episode, a short presentation and time for discussion on some of the issues raised around life, the universe and faith. Booking is essential, and places are limited. Please book via Eventbrite (search for “Dr Who” and put Portsmouth in the location box) or call the Cathedral. For further details see leaflets in the Cathedral. Friday 26th January 8.00pm Organ Concert – Adrian Lucas (Former Director of Music, Worcester Cathedral) Our evening concert series continues in celebration of the completion the new en-chamade ‘Trompete de Maris’. This next concert will be given by Adrian Lucas. Adrian Lucas is formerly Director of Music at Worcester Cathedral. The programme for the concert includes Bach, Elgar, Rachmaninov, Whitlock, and more. Tickets £10, (£8 concessions) through Eventbrite, on the door, and the Cathedral Shop. Saturday 27th January 11.00am to 12.30pm Bereavement Drop-in Monthly group for those who have been recently bereaved, know someone who is terminally ill, or are still experiencing grief, pain or anger from loss in the past. Members of the Cathedral bereavement team will be there to listen, to offer support and encouragement. Tea and coffee provided. 2.00pm Messy Cathedral An hour of fun and craft activities followed by a short service and afternoon tea. Suitable for all ages. Sunday 28th January 8.00pm Taizé-style Night Prayer A quiet and reflective 40-minute service using music and chants from the Taizé Community in France. Monday 29th January 7.00pm Annual Muslim Christian Evening Join us after Choral Evensong as we meet with our friends from the Wessex Jamat for our annual, informal evening of fun and fellowship. Light refreshments on sale from 12.30pm. 7.00pm “There are Worse Things than Death” - a time to die A seminar comprising short presentations from a range of professionals speaking from differing perspectives, followed by open discussion. Death obviously means very different things to different people; everything from a failure to extend life at considerable cost to acceptance that the 'time has come'. The seminar will be chaired by Dr Amanda Freeman - Consultant Paediatrician and Chair of Portsmouth Hospitals Trust. It will open with a case presentation given by Dr Huw Jones - Consultant in Palliative Medicine. This will be followed by four short presentations given by: The Very Reverend David Brindley - Dean of Portsmouth, Dr Paul Beadon - Lead Clinical Psychologist Rowans Psychology & Bereavement Service, David Carpenter - Senior Lecturer in Moral and Political Philosophy, University of Portsmouth and Dr Mark Roland - Associate Medical Director, Portsmouth Hospitals Trust. Friday 2nd February 6.00pm Candlemas Eucharist Special order of service sung by the Cathedral Choir. 7.30pm Wine Tasting Join local expert, David Dickinson, in the nave to learn about the art of wine tasting and how to match your food to deliver a wine at its best. Light refreshments on sale from 12.30pm. 7.00pm “Time in the Universe” lecture event with David Bacon, University of Portsmouth Join us for an exciting lecture event part of our Annual Theme on “TIME”. When we look out at our Cosmos, we look back in time. We can't see distant galaxies as they are right now - we see them as they were when light left them and began its long journey to us. This peculiar fact now let’s us witness the vast history of our Universe. Join David Bacon for his presentation on time, and a discussion about what all this means for our views about our place in the Cosmos. David Bacon is a Reader in Cosmology at the University of Portsmouth. His research focuses on how and why the Universe changes over time, as observed by astronomical surveys of distant galaxies. Tuesday 13th February Family Activity Day – Shrove Tuesday Did anyone say planetarium and pancakes? Join us for our special themed family activity day, perfect for the half-term. Pancakes will be available from 10.30am - 1pm; 2.30pm - 4.30pm. Participate in a family activity trail which invites you to discover the cathedral on your own tour. Learn about our solar system with “Solar System and Beyond”, a 'pop-up' planetarium, inside the Cathedral! “Solar System and Beyond” is a show which explores our own solar system, looking at our neighbour planet's characteristics and traits: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, as well as other major aspects in the solar system such as our moon and other planet’s moons. Also, get an introduction to stargazing and the night sky. Learn about the stories of the major constellations, such as 'Ursa Major' and 'Orion'. It was founded with the goal of organizing the independent luthiers, as well as people related to the field of guitar building, all across Europe. Why was the EGB founded? There are rumors that the electric guitar is dying. Well, we don’t happen to think so. The aim was twofold: to create a community dedicated to the support of luthiers and Yes, there are deep changes happening in today’s world and the music scene. Before he came to Portsmouth he was Assistant Organist of Ely Cathedral, having previously held Organ Scholarships at Rochester Cathedral and Croydon Parish Church. During his time at Ely he toured Germany, Belgium, Holland, Poland and the Czech Republic with the Cathedral Choir. The choir's John Amner recording for Hyperion was critically acclaimed and was the Editor's Choice in 'The Gramophone' music magazine. Since David has been at Portsmouth the profile of the Cathedral's music has been raised to new heights through twenty international tours, numerous recordings and regular work for the BBC. He has been pleased to lead vocal training sessions for other choirs and has recently worked in this capacity for the Diocese of Berlin and with the choir of Pembroke College, Oxford. In addition to his duties at the Cathedral, David serves on the Council of the Royal School of Church Music. He has recently served two terms on the Association of English Cathedral's Music & Liturgy Commiee. In his tenth year in post, Portsmouth University conferred David Price with an Honorary Doctorate of Music in recognition of the significant contribution he has made to the development of music at the Cathedral and for his contribution to the cultural life of the city.

    Adrian Lucas “Organ Extravaganza” Southend High School for Boys Friday 24th October 2014, 7:30pm Adrian Lucas first played the organ at the age of 10 and studied with Nicholas Danby at the Royal College of Music and with Dr George Guest at St John's College, Cambridge. He went on to hold a sequence of postings in Cathedrals, including Salisbury, Norwich, Portsmouth and Worcester, before leaving to enjoy the more varied experience of freelance playing and conducting. During this time, he was also Artistic Director of the Worcester Three Choirs Festival, external examiner for the Royal Academy of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire, and a regular contributor to BBC radio and TV. Over the course of his career, he has performed across most of Europe, much of the United States and Australia, appeared on international television and given live and recorded performances on radio. UK venues have included St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey in London, the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, while abroad the great churches of St Ouen, Rouen, France, St John the Divine, New York, and Melbourne Cathedral in Australia sit alongside the Sydney Opera House. In 2014, he has started to work with Cor Videns, an inspirational choir of youngsters rescued from life on the streets of Medellin, Colombia and will be returning there again in 2015. As well as running his own recording company, Acclaim Productions Ltd, Adrian now maintains a busy life as a conductor with the City of Birmingham Choir, and an international examiner for ABRSM, both for classical and jazz studies.
