Dziga Vertov, Travel Cinema, and Soviet Patriotism* Across One Sixth of the World: Dziga Vertov, Travel Cinema, and Soviet Patriotism* OKSANA SARKISOVA The films of Dziga Vertov display a persistent fascination with travel. Movement across vast spaces is perhaps the most recurrent motif in his oeuvre, and the cine-race [kino-probeg]—a genre developed by Vertov’s group of filmmak- ers, the Kinoks 1—stands as an encompassing metaphor for Vertov’s own work. His cinematographic journeys transported viewers to the most remote as well as to the most advanced sites of the Soviet universe, creating a heterogeneous cine-world stretching from the desert to the icy tundra and featuring customs, costumes, and cultural practices unfamiliar to most of his audience. Vertov’s personal travelogue began when he moved from his native Bialystok2 in the ex–Pale of Settlement to Petrograd and later to Moscow, from where, hav- ing embarked on a career in filmmaking, he proceeded to the numerous sites of the Civil War. Recalling his first steps in cinema, Vertov described a complex itin- erary that included Rostov, Chuguev, the Lugansk suburbs, and even the Astrakhan steppes.3 In the early 1920s, when the film distribution network was severely restricted by the Civil War and uneven nationalization, traveling and film- making were inseparable. Traveling remained a lifelong preoccupation for Vertov. His spatially most ambitious film, A Sixth Part of the World [Shestaia chast’ mira] (1926),4 features a cine-race across the Soviet universe stretching from Dagestan villages to Siberian forests. It creates a highly ambiguous image of a “union of Soviet borderlands,” which earned the author both high praise as an “epic cine-poet” and vilification as an “exoticism-hunter.”5 In this essay, I situate this unjustly overlooked work within the context of early travel films and point to the structural and conceptual innova- tions introduced by Vertov into this genre. I also reinsert the work into the context of its reception and briefly outline the further development of the travel motif in Vertov’s later films and film scripts. Local Sights, Global Visions: Exoticism and Patriotism in Early Travel Films Long before the appearance of cinema, fascination with remote and unfa- miliar peoples and places was catered to by literature, drawing, painting, and travel photography.6 Colonial expansion, military advances, and commercial exploitation created the ideal conditions for the merging of education, entertain- ment, propaganda, and advertisement in both verbal and visual travel accounts. The world seemed easily accessible via a variety of images not only to travelers, but also to those who familiarized themselves with the travels of others.7 By the 1910s, travel films had become a typical part of the composite programs produced and distributed by all major film companies. Downloaded from http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1162/octo.2007.121.1.19 by guest on 27 September 2021 Across One Sixth of the World 21 Image from A Sixth Part of the World. 1926. directions that affected the construction of ethnic and national imagery: ethno- graphic research, popular educational films, and commercial cinema shot against an “ethnographic” background.8 Along with “exotic” lands, filmmakers also explored and recorded local con- texts, motivated by the desire to educate and inspired by ongoing nation-building.9 This was especially true during World War I, when the cinema was viewed as an important means for encouraging patriotism and mobilizing popular support for the war.10 Even after the war, travel films often continued to present local cultures in national terms, ascribing a symbolic and cultural unity to natural vistas.11 8. On the other, it incorporates phenomenological approaches with neuroscience’s discovery of mirror neurons and an embodied simulation mechanism in order to reflect upon the techniques and cinematic styles of the travelogue genre. In this article I discuss the travelogue film genre through a phenomenological approach to film studies. First I trace the history of the travelogue film by distinguishing three main categories, each one ascribed to a particular form of realism. The hyper-realistic travelogue, which is related to a perceptual form of realism; the first person travelogue, associated with realism as authenticity; and the travelogue as a traditional documentary which is related to a factual form of realism. I then discuss how these categories relate to Andre Bazin’s ideas on realism through notions such as montage, duration, the long take and his "myth of total cinema". I discuss the concept of perceptual realism as a key style in the travelogue genre evident in the use of extra-filmic technologies which have attempted to bring the spectator’s body closer into an immersion into filmic space by simulating the physical and sensorial experience of travelling.

The brothers were in touch primarily by correspondence. According to Boris Kaufman, dur- ing his early career in France, he received instructions from his more experienced brothers, Dziga Vertov and Mikhail Kaufman, who remained in the Soviet Union. In addition, Vertov intended to make his younger brother become a French kinok. Also, À propos de Nice, Vigo’s and Kaufman’s first and most “vertovian” film, was shot with the movable hand camera Kina- mo sent by Vertov to his brother. As a result, this French “symphony of a Metropolis” as well as other films by Vigo may contain references to Dziga Vertov’s and Mikhail Kaufman’sThe Man with a Movie Camera based on framing and editing. In this perspective, the research deals with transnational film circulations appealing to the example of the impact of Russian avant-garde cinema on Jean Vigo’s films.

    The Great Documentaries II Instructor: Michael Fox Mondays, 12 noon-1:30pm, June 7-28, 2021 [email protected] With nonfiction films entrenched as a genre of mainstream movie entertainment, we examine standouts of the contemporary documentary. The five-session lineup is comprised of a trio of films about recent historical events bookended by personal documentaries. This lecture and discussion class (students will view the films on their own prior to class) encompasses perennial issues such as the responsibility of the filmmaker to his/her subject, the slipperiness of truth, the tools of storytelling and the use of poetry and metaphor in nonfiction. Four of the films can be streamed for free (three on Kanopy, one on Hoopla) and the other can be rented from Amazon Prime and other platforms. All the films are probably available via Netflix’s DVD plan. The Great Documentaries II is a historical survey that follows and builds on Documentary Touchstones I and II, which I taught at OLLI a few years ago. I’ve appended a list of those films and more information at the end of the syllabus, if you have never seen them and wish to journey further back into the history of documentaries. Most of the titles are available to watch for free on YouTube, although the quality of the prints varies. June 7 Sherman’s March (1986, Ross McElwee, 158 min) Kanopy After his girlfriend leaves him, McElwee voyages along the original route followed by Gen. William Sherman. Rather than cutting a swath of destruction designed to force the Confederate South into submission, McElwee searches for love, camera in hand, “training his lens with phallic resolve on every accessible woman he meets.” Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, named one of the Top 20 docs of all time by the International Documentary Association, added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2000.

The program, scheduled through August 26, will also include such film classics as Carl Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc;" Pudovkin's "Mother;" Erich von Stroheim's "Greed;" F.W. Murnau's "The Last Laugh;" Eisenstein's "Potemkin;" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," one of the most controversial films of its time. Thirty-seven pictures were selected by Beaumont Newhall, Director of the George Eastman House, who is responsible for organizing the current photographic exhibition, "Photo Eye of the 20s," to which "Kino Eye of the 20s" is a companion program. Mr. Newhall will appear at the Thursday evening performance, July 30 at 8 p.m., fjhen he will introduce the Murnau film "Sunrise" and discuss the series. A strong kinship between photography and film existed in this decade, when the film found its syntax and structure, according to Mr. NeT;hall. "In a quarter of a century the movies had grown from a vaudeville novelty to a distinct and po';erful art form." The decade saw the production of some of the greatest films ever made.

    4/7/2020 Elizaveta Svilova – Women Film Pioneers Project Elizaveta Svilova Also Known As: Elizaveta Schnitt, Elizaveta Vertova-Svilova, Yelizaveta Ignatevna Svilova, Yelizaveta Svilova Lived: September 5, 1900 - November 11, 1975 Worked as: archivist, assistant director, co-director, director, editor Worked In: Russia, Soviet Union by Eva Molcard A film editor, director, writer, and archivist, Elizaveta Svilova was an intellectual and creative force in early Soviet montage. She is best known for her extensive collaborations with her husband, Dziga Vertov, on seminal early documentary films, and especially for instances when she appeared on camera demonstrating the act of editing itself. The fact that Vertov’s filmic theory and practice focused on montage as the fundamental guiding force of cinema confirms the crucial role Svilova’s groundbreaking experimentation played in early Soviet film and global film history. Her career, which spanned far beyond her collaborations with her husband, significantly advanced the early principles of cinematic montage. Svilova was born Elizaveta Schnitt in Moscow on September 5, 1900, to a railway worker and a housewife. She began working in the cinema industry at age twelve, apprenticing in a film laboratory where she cleaned, sorted, and selected film and negatives (Kaganovsky 2018). This sort of work, seen as akin to domestic chores like sewing, weaving, and other “feminine” activities, was often the domain of women in film industries worldwide. At age fourteen, Svilova was hired as an assistant editor at Pathé’s Moscow studio, where she cut and photo-printed film until 1918. She worked as an editor for Vladimir Gardin while at Pathé, and edited iconic early films such as Vsevolod Meyerhold’s 1915 adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
