Neches River Festival LXXII the River Is Calling Neches River Festival LXXII The River is Calling... April 14 - 25, 2020 Overview and General Information Beginning in 1949, the Neches River became the focal point for this community to celebrate our high school youth during the Neches River Festival. That tradition continues and each year lifetime memories are made by the Festival participants as they close the chapters of their youth and prepare for exciting futures. This year’s Festival theme of “The River is Calling” will celebrate our shared region, rich in history and resources. We have many exciting activities planned for you! The popular Friday night parade returns and continues to expand with additional participants and surrounded by a public street party—all in downtown Beaumont. The Get Acquainted Dance, for high school juniors and seniors, follows the conclusion of the parade, a costume-themed event that remains one of the most anticipated events of the Festival. And, this year marks the 2nd annual “Capes and Crowns” 1k/5k run. The Festival season will also include a River/Service day which highlights important aspects of our community—economic, environmental, social and cultural. Continuing a tradition started a few years ago, Festival participants will “connect and serve” by collecting and donating children’s books to promote reading and literacy in our community. These books will be placed in existing Royal Book Nooks across our city. Two new nooks will be created in honor of NRF 72 and will be installed in new public sites. Additionally, during the magical season, a long time civic leader is honored, as the Citizen of the Year, a King is chosen, and the celebration culminates with the Coronation of a Queen and her court at the Julie Rogers Theatre. The Festival concludes with an enchanted evening of dining and dancing at the Coronation Ball at the Beaumont Civic Center. Registration Registration forms can be found online at www.nechesriverfestival.com under the FORMS tab. The registration must be done online and completed by November 15, 2019 for princesses/escorts and December 13, 2019 for duchesses. This includes all forms and registration materials for Princesses, Duchesses and Escorts. Fees The participation fee for a Princess is $400. Payment is due in full by January 26, 2020. The fee includes all Festival events including social parties, the service/river day, parade, Get Acquainted Dance, t-shirt, Coronation flowers and tickets to the Ball. A separate fee of $200 is charged for the escorts, but this is generally paid for by the escort or his family. The escorts will receive information regarding fees and participation after the Princess has submitted his name and contact information. The participation fee for a Duchess is $350. Payment is due in full by January 26, 2020. The fee includes all Festival events including social parties, parade, Get Acquainted Dance, t-shirt, Coronation flowers and tickets to the Ball. A separate fee of $200 is charged for the escorts, but it is generally paid for by the escort or his family. These fees do NOT include tickets to the Coronation or to the Ball for parents or any of the guests. These tickets must be purchased separately and will be available at a later date. *Fees will not be refunded after February 1, 2020.* Princess Escorts The escort to a Princess should be a junior or senior from one of our Southeast Texas high schools. Experience shows that the best escort is a friend who you and your parents like and who will make the events fun and important. He, too, will be a representative of the Festival and an extension of you. When you invite your escort, be certain that he checks his spring schedule to reserve the Festival dates. Conflicts with sports, travel and end of year activities can be problematic. Please submit the escort form online with your princess form by the November 15, 2019 deadline. There is a $200 fee charged for escorts which covers participation in all events as well as the Coronation and Ball. Your escort will be responsible for the rental of his tuxedo. Details will be provided at the Escort Information Meeting held in January 26, 2020. For questions regarding escorts, please contact the NRF office or Escort Chair, Nicole Saba at 409.351.5001 [email protected]. Duchesses Duchesses are high school juniors or seniors that represent cities and states outside of Beaumont. They have always been a special part of the Court and have ties to Beaumont through family, friends, businesses, or simply an interest in being a part of the Neches River Festival. A duchess having served community through her participation. If you have a cousin, friend, camp friend, or know of a young lady who would be interested in participation, please let us know! We can send interested parties more detailed information once we have their contact information. Those who come in from out of town often have more planning and arrangements to make so earlier is better. A Duchess form is available online at www.nechesriverfestival.com under the FORMS tab. Please share this information with anyone you know who is interested! We also ask that each princess host a visiting Duchess. This means that you make contact with her before the Festival week in April, see if she has questions or concerns, help make her excited about the weekend and feel welcome to Beaumont. A small welcome gift or basket of cookies and treats upon her arrival to Beaumont is a nice gesture. If you have a preference for a duchess, please send your name and hers to Duchess Chairs, Lacey Mabry at 409.781.4137 [email protected] and Sierra Fisher at 409.658.3288 /[email protected] If not, we will assign one to you and provide their contact information. Duchess Escorts Escorts for Duchesses are provided by the Neches River Festival Office and are usually a junior or senior young man from one of the High Schools in Beaumont. If a Duchess has family ties or friend connections to a local young man and would like to select her own escort that is encouraged and acceptable. This is an opportunity for all participants to make new friends and connections, and to build on those relationships already established. There is a $200 fee charged for Duchess escorts which includes participation in all events as well as the Coronation and Ball. He will be responsible for the rental of his tuxedo and details will be provided at the Escort Information Meeting held in January 26, 2020. For questions regarding Duchess Escorts, please contact the NRF office or Duchess Escort Chair Christine Stetson at 409.673.0718 [email protected]. Interviews Each Princess is asked to participate in an interview the week before the Coronation. Duchesses are interviewed the Saturday morning of the Coronation. There are approximately 10 to 12 judges and you will be asked 3 to 5 questions depending on time and the length of your answers. This is an excellent opportunity to present yourself in an unfamiliar setting and become more comfortable with public speaking. The judges are members of the Beaumont community and love meeting the girls and hearing the answers. You are our future and every year the judges say how amazing and strong our young people are. From these interviews, the Royal Court is selected; a Queen, 3 Ladies in Waiting and a Grand Duchess. All are announced at the end of the Coronation and then presented as Royalty at the Ball later that evening. To be selected is a special honor, but it is not the main purpose of the Neches River Festival. Online is the interview form, which will be given to the judges the morning of interviews. A resume is requested, but not required. Please submit these documents on or before the Princess information meeting date on January 26, 2020. Lamar University Scholarship The Neches River Festival proudly supports our hometown university, Lamar University. All participants in the NRF, including Princesses, Duchesses and Escorts, may apply for one of two scholarships awarded each year through the Neches River Festival Otho -Plummer Scholarship. Applications are enclosed and available on the NRF website. More information on Lamar can be found at www.lamar.edu. Attire A highlight of the Festival will be the formal presentation of each Princess and Duchess on the stage of the Julie Rogers Theatre at the Coronation. *Princesses wear a white, floor-length presentation gown and elbow length white gloves. *Duchesses wear a floor-length presentation gown in the color of their choice (but not white) and elbow length white gloves. The style of your gown is your choice. Introduced to the audience, your escort will meet you at center stage where you will make a formal bow to the audience. A tight dress or extravagant train might interfere with your presentation. Please contact our office if you have questions regarding styles, locations to buy dresses, or other options needed. We also have many photos of dresses worn through the years for reference. Arrangements can be made to help you find a dress and participate. My Big White Festival Dress on Facebook is an option for available presentation gowns. Please visit our website www.nechesriverfestival.com for examples of princess and duchess dresses. There will be several other activities and parties for you to enjoy. Appropriate clothing for each event will vary such as Sunday best for the Princess Interview and Duchess Interview, sundress or cover up for the pool party, costumes for the parade and Get Acquainted Dance, your NRF t-shirt for the River Dayr, etc.

EMILY PEACOCK: Pure Comedy transforms the artist’s personal journeys through loss, motherhood, and family tragedy into photographs, film, and sculpture depicting objects and images that exist in a space between the familiar and the absurd. Using safety suits and common objects seen in her home, Peacock presents a series of oval portraits of herself and her husband that feel all at once alien and very familiar to those who have experienced caring for the safety and well- being of another. This series, titled H.S.A.N.O. (Home Security Apparatuses for Non-desirable Outcomes), also brings postpartum depression to the forefront, a public health issue that affects 10 to 15 percent of mothers. By fantastically documenting her own transition into motherhood, Peacock allows others to open up about their own experiences without fear or shame, in an attempt to de-stigmatize disorders such as this. Peacock earned her degree at Sam Houston State University and her Masters at the University of Houston. Her work has been exhibited in exhibitions at galleries and art Emily Peacock, H.S.A.N.O. 2 (Home Security Apparatuses for Non-desirable Outcomes), spaces including the Houston Center for 2019, archival inkjet print mounted to aluminum, 36 x 24 in., Loan courtesy of the artist Photography, Art League Houston, Lawndale and Jonathan Hopson Gallery Art Center, Jonathan Hopson Gallery in This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by an award from the Houston, Anzenberger Gallery in Vienna, Edaren Foundation, Sheila and Jerry Reese, Anonymous in Memory Austria, the Galveston Arts Center, and Blue of Jim Kennedy, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment Star Lab in San Antonio, among others.
